It just isn't working - this weight loss thing!
2 years ago I did slimming world and got down to 9 1/2 st and was happy!
Since then, I went on the Contraceptive Injection and in the last 18 months have piled on 2 st. So a few months ago, when clothes stopped fitting and I felt awful with myself, I began dieting again.
I am cycling across Kenya next Feb and so class myself as fairly fit, as am in training for that! I am very active... for example this week -
Cycled ja short 10 miles on Sat, Rode my horse out for 2 hours on Sun (trotting is good exercise), Did Circuits Monday night, rode again Tuesday I'm a spinning Instructor so took a 45 min class on Tues night and then walked the dogs for 20 mins at a power walk pace yesterday morn. Plus twice a day I am lugging hay bales and water across a field for my horses!
I input all my food into here - sticking to my 1200 a day limit (give or take 50 calories) and try my best to eat at least half of exercise calories, just incase the database is a bit more generous that what I have burnt off. Admittidley have one naughty day a week. where i may go a little bit over my calorie allowance and have a treat, but when you press submit the system reckons I should still loose some weight over the 5 weeks so my little treat isn't too bad!
I avoid processed foods, all I drink is water and plenty of it, snack on fruit, or carrots. Only eat brown bread and limit it to 2 slices per day.
Despite this, since Sat I have gained 2 lb!! This is the same week on week, no matter how good I try I CAN NOT get mty weight down - I feel if I could just get down below 11 st it would be a great start and things would keep going from there!
I am so frustrated - really don't know what else to try.
HAS ANYONE PLEASE GOT SOME ADVICE TO HELP ME

Are you still on contraceptive injection?
Might be worth going to your doctor .. There's a few conditions that can cause weight gain that are worth checking out.0 -
I don't think you are you eating enough? Are you eating your exersise calories?

Go to the tools section and figure out your BMI:
Generally someone with a BMI over 32 can do a 1000 calorie a day (2 lbs a week) deficit
With a BMI of 30 to 32 a deficit of 750 calories is generally correct (about 1.5 lbs a week)
With a BMI of 28 to 30 a deficit of 500 calories is about right (about 1 lb a week)
With a BMI of 26 to 28 a deficit of about 300 calories is perfect (about 1/2 lb a week)
and below 26... well this is where we get fuzzy. See now you're no longer talking about being overweight, so while it's still ok to have a small deficit, you really should shift your focus more towards muscle building, and reducing fat. This means it is EXTRA important to eat your exercise calories as your body needs to KNOW it's ok to burn fat stores, and the only way it will know is if you keep giving it the calories it needs to not enter the famine response (starvation mode).

Hi, I am, but this is the last month. The nurse suggested trying something else.
The Drs is my next point of call.
Friends say that I should be a size zero the amount of exercise I do - I just don;t stop0 -

I do try to eat alot of my exercise calories, just not the full amount in case they are extra generous on the database - maybe I didn't work as hard as they expected me to!0 -
You are extremely active....have you tried measuring inches instead of pounds? That may be more of an accurate figure of your progress than weighing yourself.
Also - I hate to roll this old nugget out again, but are you eating enough? It could be that you are working your body hard, not feeding it enough and it doesn't feel it's in the right place to allow you to drop weight? Clinging on to ever last scrap.
I plateaued recently and it was so frustrating as I hadn't done anything different or wrong etc. Well, after much cajolling from friends and others on here I upped my calories, shook up my activities completely and started to lose again. Maybe shake up your exercise routine and, for a little while, up your calories.0 -
You are exercising too much for the amount you eat, you need to increase your calories. 1200 calories would be what you would need to eat if you were laying on the couch watch TV all day. Increase your calories to include the ones you burn exercising and you will lose weight, seems odd at first but it's true, try it.0

But anyway, I need to shift some weight and it ain't moving. ]

What do people think - Should I up my everyday calorie allowance - even on those days when I don't exercise, or just make a more determined effort to eat extra on those days I do exercise?0

Hey hey... PLEASE don't worry about the BMI thing. I took a nutrition class recently and my teacher pointed out that for some people that jus doesn't work! If you are extremely active and muscular then screw the BMI because it would tell a body builder that he or she were morbidly obese. Ridiculous. For most of us it is accurate.. but for special girls like you it certainly isn't!!
Also... the food is the only thing I can think of that might be something you can tweak otherwise this sounds like a medical issue. You should definitely talk to your doctor!!0 -
It won't hurt to give it a try! Up your calories for the next 2 weeks and see if you see any difference. One of mfpals did this because she hit a plateau and sure enough, it worked...I can't really fathom the idea either, eating more can help you lose weight, but people prove that on here every day! I'm shorter than you...and I'm still classed as obese at 148.2. When I had my first gym induction the instructor went mad. All because I had logged yet another loss but was still classed as obese which took the shine off it a bit. He was ranting about how innaccurate it is etc. Anyone can see I'm not obese - I work out, both cardio and resistance. Even I know now that I'm not obese - those charts are useless unless you are absolutely spot on average.
Pay nothing but a cursory glance at those charts - as active as you are and at a size 12 you are not what would be clasified as trully obese.
Pop to the docs, maybe get some blood work done - it may not be your contraceptive so don't discount anything. If it all comes back ok you know it's your calories to activity ratio that needs ammending (up, not down). If it doens't you can get it sorted. Speak to the GP, they are usually more than willing to help people in their journey to health, makes a change from handing out anti-biotics I guess :happy:0 -

I got stuck at a weight for weeks and it was really frustrating as I hadnt changed my diet or exercise plan I was doing at the gym. I researched the internet and in changing my 2 hour (boring!) stint at the gym 5 days a week to 20mins interval training (I go on the treadmill) 1min jogging, 1min sprinting but you can do the same on a bike etc 3 days a week, I've started to lose weight again! Another plus point is I dont live at the gym anymore....Hope this helps :-)0

With your activity level, you must be building muscles! Weight does not say everything. Measuring yourself, perhaps gives you more useful and motivating information.

Unfortunately, this methodology doesn't work. If your body isn't being fueled properly, it won't work. Your body has mechanisms to hold onto fat when it doesn't get a enough fuel to run this systems.
Ok, lets break this out. Since I don't know your body fat, the BMR calculation might be the most accurate but it's going to be close. At 5" , 158 lbs and 27 yr old female, your estimated BMR is giong to be 1373. Using the Katch McArdle formula and know you are very active we can take your BMR and use a TDEE multiplier to get your dialy caloric needs
TDEE = 1373 * 1.725 = 2368
Add deficit (1/2 lb per week = 2368 - 250 = 2118.
I actually feel that number is light ( i believe you are etremely active) which would be
1373 * 1.9 = 2608
2608 - 250 = 2358
Here is my suggestion, only use MFP as a food tracker (this is what I have done and use on many other people and it works). Set custom goals and set your calories at 2200, your carbs at 50%, your protein at 30% and your fats at 20%. Eat these calories every day even if you don't work out. The deficit is already incorporate and this should turn your body fat into muscle (may not see much weight loss but you will lose inches and tone up. I would eat 2200 (i took in between the two numbers) for 1 month, if you don't lose weight then increase by 200 calories (yes I said increase). I will tell you to expect you might gain a lb or two within the first week. Do not freak out as it's normal. When you body starts to see food again, it will still be holding onto food because it's not used to the extra calories, but it should correct itself after a week or two. some people have this happen, some actually lose right away. Its just a precaution. After doing this for a month, we can re evaluate your situation but it should help.

I tend to have 1 or 2 rest days a week where I don't do much exercise if any.

Just keep in mind these are estimates, could be higher/could be lower, it's a learning process that will take time. Also, work ot eat higher calorie foods. Don't do low fat/low sugar substitutes as they are highly processed and generally not as good. It took me time to high 2800 calories a day, but your body will adjust. It may take a few weeks though, keep that in mind. But when you get to the point of eating 2200, then give it a full month at that level.0
