I found this article just now while doing some research on whey protein since I just recently started incorporating it into my diet. I found out that I should not be putting the chocolate whey powder into my hot coffee since the heat changes the molecular structure of the protein and it could make me sick. So that was upsetting since putting that in my coffee tastes DELICIOUS... but what was even more startling was this article basically saying that whey is poison and that the government is trying to make us sick. WTF?
Does anyone else know anything about this or think that whey protein might be bad to consume?? The article also mentions other "poisonous" substances/foods some of which i can agree with and others that make me wonder... but either way its interesting.
Any comments?? I don't want to have to give up my whey AND soy....0 -
So I was doing some research on the internet and I found a picture of the guy who wrote the article..

did you know on the internet you can find articles that breathing air causes cancer? Or that drinking water can change the molecular level of your cells and you COULD turn into a mermaid....
If you believe every alarmist thing that you read on the internet you will live life looking like this..
I'd stick to resources a little more accredited and accepted.
Yeahh..... I'm not an idiot, thank you. I just found this startling and wondered if there was possibly any truth to it. I am fully aware that there is a lot of garbage on the internet and was simply trying to see if anyone else had heard/read anything else negative about whey protein consumption.0 -
The entire article including the author is baseless, pointless, ludicrous, and it reeks of ignorance.
Did that about sum it up?
^ this, sure am glad I don't believe everything I read. However I did find the "If you hate your kids feed them McDonalds" hilarious. Hmm... I don't like children maybe I should start handing out McDonalds to kids.
To the OP, I would not worry about adding whey protein to your coffee it wont kill you. I have been making hot chocolate out of chocolate whey protein, I did a lot of reading on the net about heating up whey protein because some people think it "breaks it down" and it is no longer good for you. I think this is misunderstood, yes it changes the structure but you are still getting the nutrients from it.
Thank you.. I'm going to look into it further. I really don't want to stop adding it to my coffee. I just hope I'm still getting all the protein and nutrients that I would if I were to add it to a cold beverage.0 -
but what was even more startling was this article basically saying that whey is poison and that the government is trying to make us sick. WTF?
I don't use protein supplements so can't really comment on their safetly, but what country do you live in that the government forces or even recommends whey protein?
The interesting thing about Whey protein comes down to the minor minor levels of some contaminants they have found in some of them from the process of making them. The health organizations make them list it in reports but they also say the levels are so low it's not something to worry about. We breathe in contaminants every day, That is why our body has filtration systems built in. We are pretty amazing in what we can do.
In America, there are "allowable values" of contaminants, including rat feces, in all ground products (flour, etc.). Even in organic products.0 -
Mmm trace amounts of bug feces. :x0

I have one thing to say on that article and it's this:

:noway: OH NO REALLY EVERYBODY STOP DRINKING WHEY PROTEIN!!!!0

Correct. I know for a long time people were freaking out and not buying muscle milk powders because of it. I still bought it because Muscle Milk cookie dough protein powder tastes freaking awesome. I just treat the contaminants like training my liver. It needs to get in shape as well :-D0 -
It's true. It was found on the internet. EVERYTHING on the internet is true. :drinker: :bigsmile:0

Three things you should always check when deciding how seriously to take ANY blog or article:
1. In general, does the writer seem conscientious, rational, competent and intelligent? This can be misleading, there are crazy people who can sound rational when they want to, but your gut instinct is often a good guide & will give you a "whackadoodle alert."
2. Is the writer citing primary sources that support his/her claim?
3. Does the writer have an ulterior motive that may be leading him/her to emphasize some facts & ignore others?
1. The writer has multiple misspellings & grammar mistakes even in the first few sentences, which automatically gives them a negative score on my "does this person have a brain - o - meter." Call me a snob, but if they fact-checked as badly as they spell-checked, then this story is probably pure fiction.
2. There is not a source cited for a single one of these claims. If this article is supposedly based on facts, where are the studies, statistics, reports, census data, biochemistry, etc.? If you can't give me a primary source that I can look at myself, then you could just be pulling these "facts" out of some bodily orifice.
3. This is a commercial site that is trying to sell a product. Basically, a snake-oil salesman. 150 years ago this con artist would have been making extravagant claims like "Cures sciatica, rheumatism, neuralgia, lumbago, toothache, sprains, swellings, frostbite, sore throat, insect and reptile bites, partial paralyxia, seistica, nervous headache, after effects of la grippe, palpitation of the heart, pale and sallow complexions and all forms of weakness in males or females." Now he's likely to get sued for saying stuff like that. The next best thing is scaring you into believing that you need this product. Hence the articles.0 -
That's it! I'm done! I've had it with Whey! I'm throwing in the towel.
Know what, I read the same thing about other foods....
I'm just going to stop eating. THAT will protect me I'm sure.
You would certainly lose weight! ha!0 -
I'm going to help you out since clearly this warrants a short tutorial on evaluating a website's credentials before posting alarmist threads about anything; HOWEVER, since I'm at work and should be doing said work I'll let the Medical Library Association do it for me.
Please, for the love of god, do yourself a favour and read this:
http://www.mlanet.org/resources/userguide.html
And if you don't like this one there are a million others out there to help you decipher good science from pure unadulterated crap.
It will only take you two minutes to read, I promise.0 -

Again, I'm not an idiot. I'm well aware that this article lacks credibility. I simply was alarmed by the POSSIBILITY that there may be some truth to what they were saying about whey, and was curious to know if anyone else had come across similar claims. I guess I will think twice before posting here asking for constructive and helpful input or comments.
I will try again.... Has anyone come across anything on the web or elsewhere saying negative things about whey protein and/or it's production?0 -

Actually, you asked for comments, but if you're really interested in this "topic" you can do your own research and make an informed decision about it that way. Use Google Scholar and search to see if anyone has published an article about it.
I've already done a quick search and discovered that whey protein may have immunoenhancing properties according to one article and that it's also used in the treatment of patients with metastatic carcinoma in another. One man's poision...0 -
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to post on these forums asking questions that could be answered by doing research. I thought the purpose of these forums was to have conversations and share experiences and knowledge?
I rarely post on here for this very reason.. for fear of being disrespected and made to feel stupid. I'm done. I wish people could just be nice. :ohwell:0 -
If you're that worried about what you put into your body, you could always resort to only eating food from local, organic farms. Make everything from scratch, etc. Takes out all the guess work. Not saying I would ever do that, but I do try to do things that way whenever possible. lol.
Yes this. I admit, I can be a bit of a conspiracy theorist sometimes. It interests me a lot. A lot of people will say dairy isn't meant/good for us and does cause a lot of inflammation in the body because the pasteurization process kills the good stuff in it. Some people drink raw milk for this reason and have found that their allergies and many ailments go away. I won't deny that a lot of what the govt does is NOT in our best interest which it is important to rely on your own research for everything.
Anyhoo, on topic, I use whey protein occasionally, but I make sure i get it without antibiotics, hormones, etc because that is important to me. Otherwise I try to be sure I get all my protein from natural sources.0 -

You posted a topic you thought to be incorrect, because you aren't an idiot, in case of the possibility that this completely random source that goes against just about 99% of all other views could be correct. Then you get upset that people say no it's stupid info don't buy into it. Do you see the logic here? We aren't disrespecting you, you posted for peoples opinions and you got the peoples opinions. If you don't like said opinions you shouldn't ask for the opinions. If what we all posted on this topic hurt your feelings then internet message boards are not for you. You will get peoples 100% non-sugar coated answer on them, they aren't going to hold back or pull any punches.
You posted a topic that you yourself said you knew probably wasn't true, what did you expect to us all go.. OMG, you have gave us the holy grail of knowledge. Everything that we know and have been taught is false and wrong. I am so glad that you found the one article to save mankind from whey protein. You aren't a stupid girl so when you read something that sounds stupid, it probably is. Trust yourself more! Your gut instincts will be right more times then not when judging information. No one can make you feel stupid but yourself and you don't seem like a stupid person.0 -

Thank you to those of you who had helpful responses and actually understood my concerns and why I posted this. I'm going to continue to have my whey powder but only once a day, if that.0

Can I ask a legitimate question? Are you lifting a lot? What is making you take the whey powder over getting it naturally from your diet? I am just curious as usually whey protein is taken by those you are lifting quite a bit. I have always been told, even by my dr. and nutritionist that if you aren't lifting a lot the powder will give you protein but you could very easily add that protein by your diet naturally. Also protein naturally will help you bulk which will cause the scales the tip the other way. You don't seem to be going over on your protein at all so I don't think it will cause anything. I'm asking about the lifting and etc because looking at your diary I don't see any exercise being logged. More then anything I'm just curious.0 -

No where in my original post did I ask for opinions on the article. My main objective and the conclusion to my post was asking if anyone else had read/heard anything bad about consuming whey protein. Finding that article was what made me wonder about this.. so I decided to share it.
It's not people's opinions that make me feel disrespected, but the WAY that they choose to express those opinions. I guess I don't appreciate the sarcasm and obnoxious pictures and the "tough guy" attitude that yourself and others have on these boards. I asked a question about a topic that was brought to my attention by a website I stumbled upon. Simple as that. There is no reason to lecture me on how to go about doing research. Ugh. Over it.
Again, thanks to those of you who actually understood my concerns. And thank you to those of you who sent me messages because you were too nervous to post on the board and being on the receiving end of this negativity.0 -

I decided to try adding whey to my diet because I am on a low carb program and it was suggested to me that I get more protein. I don't eat meat (I do eat fish and eggs) so this is a good way to supplement my protein intake.0
