My faux boyfriend was in a hit and run...

The short story:

Very elderly woman did not stop at red light, but turned right on red into BF's path causing him to choose hitting a street lamp instead of her. Extensive damage done to his car and minor injuries to passenger that required treatment.

A witness followed old lady b/c she did not stop. Witness called the po po with her license. When she stopped, witness told her she needed to go back to the scene b/c she caused the accident. She did turn around - and AGAIN drove right past the scene. BF saw her drive past and pointed her out to police and also got the DL#. Police couldn't pursue her at the moment but said they would follow up once the ambulances/firetrucks were gone and accident cleaned up.

It's now been over 24 hours with no word from the police regarding this elderly woman... whether they found her, if she's insured, nothing.

Here's the question... How long should it reasonably take to hear back from the police with information?

    I would think 24 hours would be enough. I would call them.

    Whoa ... that's crazy! But I don't know at all how long something like that should take. I'm annoying and I'd probably be calling the police office every few hours.

    We had a similar incident happen during the summer of 2010. Still haven't heard a word. Our insurance company is supposedly doing an investigation and will call every 6 months to update us that they have no new information.

    Hint* Calling the police to ask if they found out anything yet is the quickest way to prolong the procedure.

    Perfect example of why some old people shouldn't drive, once you hit 70+ it's a road test everytime you want to renew.

    I would call at least once daily. When I was hit I had to wait 72 hours for the official report but the guy who hit me stopped. Well, his car wasn't likely to go even if he wanted to. Ask to speak to one of the officers who was there. That way you don't have to go through the entire story every time you call.

    It took me about 2-3 weeks to hear back from the police about my hit and run. But they did get back to me about it, and the stupid b*tch was finally prosecuted for careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

    BTW - I was notified by mail.

    I was in a crash with a police officer and it took almost 6 months for the police report to be available. I called / went to the station a couple times every week. Your "faux" BF needs to stay on top of this!!

    I wouldn't have swerved and would have hit her. That would've stopped her.

    That said, I have perfect situational awareness and incredible reflex time. Probably would've avoided the accident altogether.

    They may have tried to get in touch with her, but she won't answer the phone or return their calls. If that's the case, you'd think at some point they'd send a cop to her house, but who knows how long they try to make phone contact before doing that? Surely in the event of damages and injuries, they wouldn't just let her off.

    I'd call at least once a day until it is resolved.

    I would allow 72 hours for processing of the paper work.

    I think it took about a week to get the police report from my minor traffic accident. And there were no complications like having to find the person who hit me. I would not expect to get any information in 24 hours.

    I would also watch the news for her; she will inevitably put it in D instead of R and run into some type of structure.

    Hey darlin. My hubby is a cop so I can give you a little insight.

    Wait another 24 hours and then call them back again. It could just be that they don't have the staff to follow up on it atm (you never know what's going on each day), but reminding them is never a bad thing. Just don't get upset at them for 'taking too long.' They'll get it done, it just takes time and procedure, but calling to check up on the file isn't a terrible thing to do. =) They don't mind giving people updates.

    I agree. We just had an older woman drive through a grocery store. She "accidentally" reversed out of her spot 3 lanes from the door, between the cement pillars in front of the door and through 2 sets of doors into the produce. ALL in reverse!

    I totally agree. My grandma's sister got into an accident because she was so worried about the car "driving too closely" behind her that she drove her car off the road. scary stuff.

    OP - I would call. Light a fire so they get something done!

    Just wait till their car breaks and don't let anyone take them to get it fixed. That's what my parents did... lol
