I don't know about anyone else but for me...Thanksgiving is the time of the year where there is so much food I just end up eating ALLLL day. Ugh, I am so dreading the day when it comes because I know I'm going to have to cook for the family. Im just worried about controlling my food in take...especially when there's going to be food just sitting around waiting to be eaten. I'll eat when Im hungry, Im just worried about over eating....anyone feel the same or know how to refrain themselves?

I am alittle im going to CALI for Thanksgiving with my brother who said we are going turkey trotting..... guess its like bar hopping hahahah! just afraid i will eat way to much.... just keep thinking if i eat this much i have to work out that much more! ughhhhh lol0

If you don't, its one day. One day does not derail everything you've worked for.
It's not Thanksgiving and Christmas by themselves that make us gain weight over the holidays, its the endless stream of parties and leftovers, paired with slacking off on exercise because its cold out.0 -
Nope, I'm not worried I'm planning on getting an hour run in before I eat, then dang it, I'm gonna enjoy the good food! :drinker:0

For me, although Thanksgiving does some damage Christmas is the one I have to watch out for. But really I'm going to be so focused on spending that time with my family that I will probably not even log. Might be a terrible attitude but I choose to use those holidays as cheat days.0

I am not worried, Thanksgiving was a month ago!!0

I'm not worried about it at all. It's just a day and my theory is that if I snack all day, I won't really eat that much at "meal" time which is fine. Yes, I may go over my calories for the day but I know I've done that on recent business trips too just because I had to eat out so it's really not that different and so far no day or two of way over calories has thrown me off.
The one thing I am going to be aware of is what I'm snacking on...Carbs (taters, rolls..etc) are my weakness so I'm going to try and stay away from those just cuz I know I'll eat a bunch of that!0 -
Because I'm also doing the cooking, my plan is to make sure I have a good breakfast so I don't go into the cooking process starving and to keep carrot sticks handy incase I feel the need to be snacking on something. As for the actual dinner I WILL EAT EVERYTHING! Just in normal size and not over the top portions. I have already found that I can't eat as much in one sitting, so I'll make sure I have a taste of everything but not eat enough to make myself miserable.0

I give myself 3 "free" meals a week. Thanksgiving is sure to be one of them. Also, plan to exercise earlier that day as well as the day after so the food won't leave you feeling guilty. Healthy eating is NOT about feeling guilty, but about responsibility. If you plan on pigging out, then plan on upping the exercise around that meal. That's all. No biggie. :-)0

i just work a little harder in the gym - make myself EARN the pumpkin cheesecake. also i have a little bit of everything so i don't feel as though i'm missing out on anything - everything in moderation. the holidays are to be enjoyed -0

Im looking forward to it Ive been good about watching what I eat and Im sure thanksgiving is gonna be another opportunity to set a good example for my family0

You should give yourself a well desrved break... I fet like this about celebrating over Christmas I have decided I would have worked so hard in the run up to christmas that I am giving myself time off. I am going to enjoy myself and eat and drink and be merry. I love everything about christmas.. the food... the films... the presents haha. Giving lovely gifts that I choose very carefully so that they cause delight lol. I will be having a break and then I will be powering on after the new year to reach my goal weight.
I actually have a suspicion that I will make better choices and try not to cram as much junk as usual but I will be sure to enjoy myself.
Good luck x0 -

Nope, not worried here... I've got 2 weeks to hit it as hard as I can so I can enjoy the day and all it's festivities....0

Kind of but im vegan so ive gotten used to watching everybody else stuff their face, saying no to my Mother, and getting weird joy from watching others eat.0

I start the day with a 10K run. It takes some of the guilt away :-)0

LOL, +1 for Canadians!0 -
Holidays are as much a part of life as fitness. I account for the holiday through extra exercise, sensible gorging, and recognizing that a feast once in a while isn't going to kill anyone. I fully intend to have two pieces of pie. Eating properly 95% of the time IS good enough for me. It just doesn't make any sense to sacrifice life and experiences for the sake of preparing myself for a life of better experiences. I can do both. Enjoying a feast doesn't mean I'm cancelling my gym membership... and, I will be logging every single bite. My progress so far gives me confidence in my decision. If I were just starting to try to lose weight next week, it might be another story.0

I plan on sleeping threw that day. never even waking up to be tempted with the food. haha
yeah...i wish i could do that!0 -
I'm concerned, not only am I watching calories. I also don't have white sugar, gluten and try to watch my sodium intake too. This is going to be really tough.0

I entered a 5k for the morning to help with what I do eat. and try to use the rule of half, if you have to have it eat half of it~!0

I am doing all the cooking for Thanksgiving & Christmas this year.
That means my Dh & kids are going to have to pitch in.
I am making traditional holiday food and putting out fresh fruit salad and fresh raw veggies for when the temptation to nibble creeps in.
I plan to fill my average size plate with good choices.
I probably will be too busy to log it all (MFP) though but I am not going to worry about it.
I plan to prepare as much as I can AHEAD of time so I am not in the kitchen all holiday.
My Dh & kids are going to be in charge of clean up and putting things in the fridge so I can enjoy my time out of the kitchen with family.
An early ( dawn ) run / walk is an excellent idea and part of my plan.
That is the best I can do to prepare and keep myself in check.
Don't let the holidays be a stressor or an excuse.
Make a plan and do it....you will feel great for it.
Keep pushing forward.0 -
I agree that moderation is the key and that one day will not kill anyone. My wife and I are planning on having our turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day and our pie the following day. That way, we break up the calories, and we don't stuff ourselves. I must admit that there have been past years where I was not hungry but ate the pie anyway. This year, I will appreciate it more. Also, as long as I exercise, I'll be OK.0

I am planning ahead and trying to find healthy sides/desserts. Another plan is adding exercise somewhere in the day.0

There will be much food to eat, we will be visiting family - driving a lot too. Family lives in different towns, my parents, his parents, and etc. I also plan to work out too. I am like you if food is there & it smells so good, I need to have control - don't over due it. I think I will do better this year - :smooched:0
-
The nice thing about it is you are the one cooking so you have the control. Last year I took the family recipes and tweeked them a little bit so they were much lower in calories. A couple of good websites I use for recipes are skinnytaste.com or tasteofhome.com. The taste of home website has a whole section of low calorie thanksgiving recipes. Also a good tip that sounds lame is chew gum before mealtime. That way you won't be as tempted to snack all day because you will have to remove your gum to do so. Hope that helps!!!!0

Nope, not worried. If you are stressing out about a holiday meal you should maybe relax a little bit.0

Wow, I so can relate and I have come up with a variety of strategies to get me thru.
First, when everyone else gets a dinner plate (10-12 inches) I set myself a salad plate (8-9 inches) Even if I fill it, I am not overindulging cause it is less than I usually have when I weigh and measure everything.
Second - Since I am doing the cooking, I generally try to go onto mfp and log what I want to eat. Then I know if I can add an extra or not.
Third, I try to not put any food in my mouth til I sit down at the table - once I start, I can't stop - so I just don't. If you can't avoid it, get yourself a plate of cut up celery (or another vegetable that you like and don't have loads of calories - but have good stuff. That way my mouth is busy.
Fourth - I drink LOADS of water. It is less for thirst than something to hold in my hand and it fills me up.
Fifth - I make sure to get my exercise in early so I can eat a little more than without and don't have to feel as guilty.
Sixth, if i am going to overeat I try to overeat salad, veggies, turkey - not stuffing, pies and potatoes.
Seven, if I want to try everything I start with just a taste - if I don't like it or i like something a whole heck of a lot more I don't mess with the non tasty calories. If I start with a tablespoon amount of lots of things on my small plate I am not depriving myself..
Eight, make sure you follow your MFP routine - check in in the morning - just to remind yourself that you are taking care of yourself, and to touch base with all your MFP friends.
Nine - friend me and ask for my support!
Good Luck0 -
All of you have some very insightful tips, thank you!0

I'm not worried really. I know for a fact that I will be way over my calorie goal. For reasons I won't go into, my husband and I attend two full on traditional family Thanksgiving dinners every year. My family keeps the dishes fairly healthy, his does not. By the end of the day we will be stuffed and uncomfortable. But it's just one day so no big deal.0
