I was on Imitrix (imitrex?) when I had migraines, and it worked wonderfully without being a narcotic or making you too funny headed. I would still be a bit spacey because the migraine would do that anyway, but it worked really well for me with no side effects. I've heard other people say it didn't do anything for them at all, just have to try different things and see what works with your body chemistry.

I'm so sorry you suffer from migraines. I would not wish that on anyone. I haven't heard of the med you're taking, but I also don't get them as often as I did when I was younger. I used to get Imitrex shots when the headaches were really bad and they worked wonders. Then Imitrex came out with a pill. The pills also worked really well, but not quite as fast or nearly as powerful as the shots. And I don't remember them having any weird or uncomfortable side effects. (The shots definitely did - but I'm pretty sure you still have to see a doc to have those administered...) You might ask your doc about the pills. Feel better soon :flowerforyou: .

there are SO MANY different drugs out there. I would tell your doc that one doesnt work and get another... Imitrex, Maxalt, Relpax, Midrin, Zomig, Amerge

I wouldnt take something that made me feel "high" when there are so many other choices your doc could give you to try.

    good luck

OTC Excedrin migraine is WONDERFUL....but RX's that you can ask about are: Relpax, Frova, Maxalt, Zomig, and Treximet. If you are getting them often you might need to go on a beta blocker such as propranolol and if that doesnt work, Depakote is also indicated for the prevention of migraines. You just have to see what works best for you. Any of the above will REALLY help you!! If you have any more questions, just ask me. :) Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

I know that there are people out there that just suffer with migraines but has your doctor, tried to see why your having the headaches, have you had a CT MRI to check for anything that could be wrong. Last year I had benign brain tumor removed and let me tell you I had the most servere migraines literally putting me in the bed at 5 pm when I got home. I had it removed actually one year ago this month. Now I am pretty much migraine free.
As far as meds I am sorry I have nothing to recommend just wanted to tell you to tell your doctor that you want a CT if you have not had already. Good luck!!!:flowerforyou:

Wish I could help. They've given me several (Imitrex, Midrin, and Buteralol (sp?)-acetatminiphine-caffeine mix), and two different kinds of "cocktail" shots. nothing works:noway: .:grumble: I'm suppose to see a migraine specialist next week. If I find anything out, I'll let you know!

I have had migraines since i started puberty....:ohwell: Every month i get on average 3 migraines starting around a week before my period and they stop when my period is done .... besides my period my other "trigger" is stress and anxiety... unfortunately my anxiety and stress level has been CRAZY the past month with stuff that has been going on .... and i have had a migraine nearly every day for the past month:noway: I am also not sleeping well due to the anxiety so often the migraine from the day before is still there when i wake up in the morning... its becoming crazyness which is why i got new meds... i was on an over the counter med called mersindol which has codine in it and im not comfortable taking them every day because they can become addictive... and i was to the point where i was taking 3 at a time just so they would work.... ugh...
I am to go back in a week to let her know if these meds work so i will get her to change the med then... i thought my migraine was gone tonight just cause im so focused on the HIGH feeling... but i got up to go pee and i thought my head was gonna explode lol

sorry if my writing / thinking is all over the place:grumble:

If they are "normally" related to your period, then Frova is the better choice, its a "women" migraine med for that reason. Also, the stress can really take a toll on you...have you tried another anit-depressant/anxiety med? Effexor, or Pristiq? Lexapro, zoloft, cymbalta....there are many more. That alone could really cut back on your migraines.

i suffer from chronic tension headaches almost daily, especially around my period. i have tried what seems like a MILLION medicines, including anti-depressants. i take amitripyline for anxiety, but i would say they somewhat help with the headaches, but not much :( I hope all of us headache sufferers find some relief soon! :)

I  Imitrex, and if I need to add to it, Tylenol Extra Strength.

I was on Topomax for migraines and possible seizures at one point. Made me lose my mind and all control over my emotions (and verbalization of those emotions!! :noway: ). I'm not a Topomax fan at all.

I took Topamax before and I did not like it at all. It made me lose feeling in my feet and my hands, and my speech was slurred. I take Fiorcet (sp), and it works well for me.

    Oooh yeah, forgot.
It makes your hands and feet tingle like you have pins and needles (like your hand fell asleep).

Also, I kept feeling like my hair was caught in the corner of my mouth (you know, when the wind blows hair and it catches and you have to brush it away). So I was brushing non-existent hair from my mouth (bottom right side only) for days, over and over again.

    Sheesh. Those were crazy pills!

my mom has suffered from migranes since puberty. she is 60 (wow!) now. she used to get the imitrex shot and it would help. when they came out with the pill she took it and said imitrexwas the one and only thing that had ever helped with her migranes. she was on cloud 9 as you can imagine.

then something bad happened. she started having angina really bad and ended up in the hospital for chest pains about once a month for 2 years. anything she did to over excert herself would land her in the hospital - as simple as walking up a flight of stairs. she went to the mayo clinic among other specialists. after a barage of endless tests the conclusion was that she had a completely healthy heart (no blockage or anything!). they diagnosed her as a small percentage of the population that experiences symptons of an un healthy heart with nothing actually wrong with her heart.

one of the side effects of imitex is people with normal healthy hearts may experience heart problems. *bing* i am 100% convinced that medication has done this to her. she of course stopped taking it when all of the heart issues popped up. and i suppose it is great news to know her heart is healthy (it was a scary couple of years! she was in the hospital so often they stopped telling me when she went it, which i totally hated). now she takes meds for her heart pains and migrane prevention. not sure what scripts she is on but a lot of the above mentioned sound familiar. nothing works as good as her imitex did though

i spoke with a friends mother the other day about this. she said she used to get the migranes really bad - just like my mom. she started seeing a chiropractor and over time, the migranes completely stopped. she did say her sister tried the same therapy and it did not work. so i guess its all about finding what works best for you. i wish there was something easier than trial and error because those headaches are brutal. i have been lucky enough to stop them before they start - when i see funny lights and feel like i am gonna puke i take advil and go lay down in a dark room. my brother on the other hand is a sufferer just like my mom
