"You carry your weight well"

I'm sure most of you hear that and have mix emotions. Some take that as a complement and some take that as an insult. My question is why everyone feel that way (either good or bad) with that comment. If you look in the mirror and like what you see, shouldn't that be enough?

Let's say (talking mostly to the ladies) you're a size 8 but weigh about 160-170 pounds. Your friends think you weigh 20 pounds lighter than you really are so when you tell them that number, they're stunned (in a good way). I remember being a size 12 and get that comment all the time, even though I weigh about 30 pounds heavier than the average size 12 woman.

All I can say is that some do carry it well. Maybe the weight is on your breasts or butt while the rest of the body is lean. Maybe you have a larger overall frame (still toned but your lean muscle weighs a lot).

It's just my 2 cents on this since I see many people complain about that statement.

  • I think people say it in a well intentioned way, but it can be frustrating. I am super muscular so I weigh more than I look. My doctor looked at my chart, did a double take, asked me if my weight was right and then said "You look awfully thin to weigh that much."

Mine is mostly in my chest, so people think I'm like 20 or 30 pounds lighter than I am, but I still feel a bit insulted when I get that comment because who is for them to judge? Most of the people giving those comments haven't been overweight a day in their life and don't know what it's like to feel fat, then to have that remark come off sounding kind of negative? Well, I could just be being sensitive, but I think it's rude.
  • I understand exactly what you are saying. I'm a size 8 and weigh 160 pounds. I have an aunt who weighs in the 150's and she is a size 10-12. She swears up and down that I cannot be a size 8 because I weigh more than her. We are the same height but we are different sizes. It drives me crazy. I feel as if I need to wear my clothes on inside out so people can see the size. It's fustrating but hey, I'm a size 8 and proud of it. I was a size 20. I told my aunt that if she worked out and toned up that she could be in smaller size clothes. She still refuses to believe me. Oh well her loss is my gain!

If someone thinks I look lighter than I am, I don't get insulted by that, if anything I'll take it as a good thing.
I'm not really fussed about weight as long as I feel good with how I look.

I used to get this when I was heavier and always took it as a compliment. Now, I think it is people maybe not knowing what to say or even being truly ignorant.

The scale, really is, just a number. There are SOOOO many factors that make an individual's weight vary vs. their size, muscle mass, bone mass, height.... just to name a few.

Take it with a grain of salt. Be like the duck and let it be water off your back. :)
