  • I have PCOS and it is tough but not impossible. I've stuck to MFP guidelines and started walking. I eat a balanced diet and stay away from refined carbs and I've dropped 20 lbs and my hormone levels are starting to regulate. I'm hoping, one day, to be rid of PCOS :)

    Have her join :)

What a good friend you are! I hope your friend does join MFP - there are a lot of us here with PCOS, and we will certainly be able to relate to her difficulties, but as you can see from my ticker, and that of many others with this issue, it CAN BE DONE.

Send her on over to join the PCOS group when she joins - lots of tips there, and people she can ask questions of.

The most effective way of losing weight with PCOS I've found is low-carbing. I personally need to keep my carbs down below 30g per day and drink plenty of water.

She'll find lots of support here :-))
  • Don't miss her doctors appointments for ultra sounds. Focus more on measurments than the scale since the weight could fluctuate due to the quantity of cysts. I actually lost 5 lbs when my cyst burst (I had one the size of a grape fruit but am not diagnosed with pcos). Heating pads at night are amazing and a body pillow to hug was my life saver. Alieve is naproxen so it can help with swelling and pain if she isn't on regular meds.
  • Hi there, I was diagnosed w/PCOS in Feb of 2010. I then lost about 45 lbs and w/the help of clomid, HCG triggers and metformin I finally got pregnant!
I now am the happy mom of an 8 week old baby girl.
I found metformin to be EXTREMELY helpful, it's a drug used to treat diabetes and helps your body to regulate sugars and insulin production, with PCOS that is a big problem.
Other than that, low carb and low sugar helped and eat ENOUGH. If I restricted my calories too much my body held onto everything I ate.
Tell your friend good luck and if you have any questions at all please please feel free to ask. A diagnosis of PCOS w/all that goes with it is a hard road to walk.

search PCOS on here, there's several threads on it that may be helpful to you both. there's a LOT of us on here! good luck to you and your friend!
  • I have PCOS also. I too am having a hard time losing weight (along with severe acne and I'm 31!) My gyno suggested a diet with no simple sugars. He pretty much said anything good, don't eat it. I really find that unrealistic, but I have really backed off the carbs and started really exercising. Hoping to see results soon. This program has really helped me! I hope she decides to join and best of luck!

In addition to all the other comments: If she has been diagnosed with PCOS, her doc should also be aware of the benefits of Metformin, and evaluating whether she needs it or not, it is helpful to have for those patients to conceive, but can also be beneficial for weight loss and controlling the blood sugars. Tell her good luck!
  • Metformin helped me too but not in the way it's supposed to! It tore my stomach up so badly that I couldn't eat and lost weight lol

I have pcos, I use natural supplements to regulate my pcos. I used to use metformin to get everything under control, but that is medicine that also have side effects. I want to be healthy and the best way I have found is through natural supplements. If anyone is interested in natural supplements just leave me a message and I will be able to direct you to isotonix supplements.

Hi, I was diagnosed with PCOS some years ago when my husband and I were trying to conceive. It's tough but not impossible. Through my faith in God, I watched my diet and lost weight. Within 3 months from my being diagnosed I was able to conceive (my beautiful daughter just turned 9). I never had anymore problems or symptoms from PCOS (even though I gained weight).

So my suggestion for you friend would be to definitely join MFP to gain even more encouragment and support in losing the weight. I'm sure that if she loses weight she'll see tremendous improvements in her all around health.

Kuddos to you for being such a great friend!

I've been formally diagnosed with PCOS for 5 years. Low carb is a must on here. It's a battle, but it is worth it.
