Grocery Store Sushi?

I've eyed the sushi at our supposedly higher end grocery here...it just...I don't know, it's not happening0

The Safeway near my work has a sushi chef. It is actually decent sushi if you need a quick fix.0

I like california rolls. You really can't screw them up.0
-
I've had it from a few places, it's not that bad. Make sure it's pretty fresh, of course.0

My local Sunflower Market prepares it on-site, and it's tasty.
I tolerate the "natural foods" and patchouli smell in there, just to get the sushi.0 -
Depends on the store. I've tried, and it settles my sushi craving until I can get the real thing. And they have a calories on there so that's helpful. Wegman's has seaweed salad and its truthfully not that bad!0

I've had it once or twice and i'm hear to tell the tale. But I do have a pretty strong constitution.0

This. As long as the sushi chef is on the premises, it's okay.0 -
we have a couple of stores that sell it, but it is almost as much as the restaurant0

Kress on 3rd ave has decent sushi0 -
Yup.. The store that has a sushi chef makes some reasonable sushi here.0

Our Superstore sells sushi, they have people making it fresh! It's pretty good!!0
-
I've had Publix sushi and it did the job.0
-
oops! I meant making it fresh!!0

I buy a package now and then and am always disappointed. It's over priced and just not as tasty as going to a sushi bar or making it yourself.
I will still do it though, when I'm feeling lazy or out shopping and don't want to cook that night, but it's always dissatisfying afterwards.
Life's too short to eat grocery store sushi.
Added: I like the stuff they don't have in grocery stores anyways. Uni, Amaebi, Toro. They mostly have rolls.0 -
I have gotten it before. Not horrible, but nothing beats the real deal sushi house.
Man....What's with all the sushi posts today. I'm jonesin!0 -
I just can't do it.....Ever since I saw an episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels where Shannon and her sister barfed all night from it...eeewwww LMAO0
-
Our local Safeway makes it fresh and it's decent. But I'd rather order a roll in advance from a Sushi restaurant instead.0

Man....I'm dying for sushi now. Hate to go alone though. Anyone can get to Portland by 4pm, let me know. I'm buying.0

I've done it when I had a craving for a roll but didn't want to go to the restaurant alone. I actually watched the sushi chef (of Asian persuasion) make it yesterday at the local Reasor's, bought some and it was quite good.0

i was soooo iffy about grocery store sushi until i final had some. now i appreciate the price and convenience. of course you must have a fresh clean store. once that is established, sushi at a moment's notice is one of life's simple pleasures. *sheds a single tear* hahaha0

The ones I had (Wegmans & Price Chopper) were a step above the Tasty Super Terrific Happy Family All U Can Eat And Then Some China King or Queen Buffet* places.
And this is now the second sushi thread I've read tonight and now I'm jonesin'!!!
*Name only slightly exaggerated.0 -
Grocery sushi gets thumbs up...except it actually is most often priced higher than in a shop.0

Our gorcery store has this phenomenal sushi guy that will do it right up there for you (it is a higher end grocery store. Only place around that seems to sell any organics)- Holy cow, is it good!0

Glad to hear this, we're about to get a Publix here and I'm excited.0 -
Safeway here gets it made by a sushi place nearby, its not bad, but not in the same playing field as going to a sushi restaurant. I find the rice is too firm and crumbly, not moist and chewy like it should be. But if I can get my pickled ginger and wasabi fix, I'm satisfied with the delivery system, knowing that it's sub par, and just a quick lunch option. I used to get it all the time when i worked across the street.0

Honestly, you can get pretty good sushi at grocery stores. I've had good sushi from Costco, believe it or not. I know everyone is worried about the fish. Assuming the fish is fresh, the problem is the rice. Once you refrigerate the rice, it gets hard and crumbly. That's why grocery store sushi will never be as good to me - unless you catch them preparing it.0

I've hit it.
Not bad.
Not the best.
But I like sashimi, and they don't sell that.0 -
They sell sashimi.... it's called RAW FISH!!!!
Costco sells the rolls, and they are not bad.0 -
