Need Ideas?

Need ideas to add to my exercise. I currently only do cardio on my elliptical trainer or go for walks when its nice out. I can't afford a gym membership and can only work out at home. I have a bad right hip and find that the low impact cardio has helped a lot.

So what type of weight or resistance training can I do at home that doesn't take up too much space, because my workout area is only a very small room.

  • I live in a pretty small studio type apartment, and I've been able to do Jillian Micheal's 30 day shred, and the butt bible with no problem. Might be a good place to start?
  • do you have staires in your home or anywhere near!? if i was you i would walk/run up and down them 100 times a day along with your other cardio activities... it will add to your calorie burn a lot!!! i used to do that when i didnt have a gym membership... this was years ago when i had lost a bunch of weight... i now attend a gym, the only way i stay motivated now days

I didn't think I could afford a gym, either...but I found out the Planet Fitness near me is only $15/month. If that sounds like it's in your price range, you should check to see if there's one in your area.

At home, I have a few free weights and resistance bands. Some suggestions for what you can do at home are (and I apologize...I don't know the proper names for some of these):
    - Curls
    - Curl and raise over your head
    - Lift straight out to your sides
    - Lift behind your head

These are great and don't require weights:
    - Planks
    - Side Planks
    - Scissor Kicks
    - Lunges (you can add weights to up the intensity)
    - Squats (again, you can add weights)
    - Wall Squats
    - Push-ups

Another thing you can do to add to your cardio workout is to run while holding some light weights. I found this steps up the intensity of my workouts and works my arms at the same time. :-)

Thank you for the ideas. Very helpful. I can't use dvd's since where the tv's are there's next to no space. But I'm still afraid of using weights and that so I still don't think it will happen. I live in a small town with two gyms, one that's all women and have tried and was too much and didn't get results (went there for like 8yrs). Another I'd never go to because I've never liked the place.
