I'm a final year medical student and right now I barely find ANY time to exercise, cook etc (sometimes i'm in hospitals from 7am-9pm...and other times I have graveyard shifts 12am-8am)....and it's only going to get harder next year as an intern with 48 hour ****s!! I know it is no excuse but I'd love to hear how other healthcare professionals deal with the stress of hospital work and succeed to lose/maintain weight and tone up!!

I'm in my final 3 weeks of nursing school and putting in 12 hour shifts. I'm just trying to make really good food choices and not eat past 7pm. I don't have any advice on how to go about your grave yard shifts. I also take the stairs as much as possible in the hospital as I don't have any time for exercise by time I get home.

Congrats on finishing up medical school!!

Taking the stairs is what is keeping my weight down lol....unfortunately food choices are poor...and sometimes I creep towards the vending machine :P not that often though! What do you eat??? I get about 7 hours at home between commuting and work lol....in which time I have to study too...I try go for runs the days i finish early (but that's IMPOSSIBLE two weeks prior exams (which I have every four weeks) AAAAAAAAARHG so frustrating !!!!!!!!!

I see SO MANY healthcare professionals who are over weight and I do NOT want to end up like that!!!!! (or go back to that!) so every little thing I try to do!

Oh and congratulations on finishing school soon!!! :D
  • I'm second year (just finished exams.) Ye gods I hope I pass. <_>

Exercise has gone on the wayside but I'm back in to it tomorrow. I agree it can be really hard when you're exhausted from uni commitments.

I'm pre-nursing right now, but I started waking up at 6 every morning to work out since I know what's right around the corner. I would just always keep packed food on hand, fill out your diary the day before, and plan work outs in advance. I can't speak from experience since I don't start my nursing program until next year, but I know it's tough but you CAN do it!! <3

Hey! I am almost done nursing school and totally know how you feel! Going for a walk on breaks is nice if you can get it in. I find that after I work I am more likely to exercise than before, and I have a dog so that is very useful. If you have a friend with a dog, make a commitment to take the dog for a walk or something after your work. I do that even after 12hr night shifts, I grab the dog and go for a walk or run. Also, fill your days off with fun exercise-I mountain bike, kayak, surf, hike, backpack so my down time is automatically exercise! Bringing all your own food for your shift is a major help as well. I always bring extra fruits and veggies for my night shifts.

Harder being said than done! But your motivation is amazing! I try to work out videos when I get home....but exam pressure is kind of breakin me too! But next week is chill (staying at a 5 star hotel in peripheral destination :P all paid for by my school!) and plan to fully utilize the gym/swimming facilities the location has to offer!!!

I take the stairs whenever possible. I pack my own lunch (and snacks) and I steer clear of the cafeteria (and Starbucks!). Night shifts I usually don't eat much because I'm not hungry in the middle of the night (everyone makes fun of me because all I eat is veggies, hummus and fruit overnight). I walk instead of taking the subway if I have the time. And I put in good workouts on my days off!

I don't deal with the stress. I just quietly freak out and surf myfitnesspal, as if that's really going to help me meet all my deadlines. :D

    plan ahead for the week.
I've yo-yo'ed for the past few years and MFP seems to keep me honest.
