head to your grocery store and utilized their deli. they have everything from sandwiches to fresh sushi to chicken parm to large meatballs to stuffed mushrooms. last night no one was in the mood for the supper i had planned (porkchops) so we went to king soopers and everyone picked out what they wanted. hubby got salmon, i got baked potato soup, son got broccoli soup and other son got spicy buffalo wings; along with fruit, deli salads, veggies and drinks for everyone. it was expensive, but fun. and everyone was happy!

I work at a grocery store deli, its easy for the I don't want to cook days, just be careful what you pick!0

Sodium, sodium, sodium. Not to mention expensive! I mean, you're already at the store, how hard is it to broil a piece of meat and steam some broccoli?0

i don't get worked up about sodium. if you do, that's fine. it was expensive (almost $50 for the 4 of us), but it was cheaper than a nice restaurant.0 -
My local grocery store used to have the best deli ever... not sure how healthy it was but it was delicious. But that store closed years ago. I haven't tried any of the delis around here because they look like crap buffet food.0

Ditto x 2! Deli food is kinda gross compared to whole food. Pizza would be my choice IMO.0 -

$50 at a grocery store deli for 4 people?!?!?!?!? :noway: When I go to our local grocery store deli for lunch it costs me less than $7 alone, sometimes as little as $3. Mulitply that by 4 & it's under $30.
Glad I live in the middle of nowhere....
it can be done a lot cheaper than what we did last night. if i stop in for a deli lunch, i usually grab the seared tuna steak for $3.60 and a pre-made salad for $3.99. last night, we went all out. hubby got a package of pre-cut pineapple and blueberries, sons shared a package of pre-cut strawberries and kiwi and i got a pre-cut watermelon. normally we'd only buy one and share or cut it ourselves. also four different deli salads when normally one would do. and individual 'naked' drinks because we wanted to eat there. it was a splurge.0 -
Sounds like a good once-in-a-while treat.0

Everyone stop being negative nellys! If she wants to do that, that's HER choice. It was a tip, not something to get negative responses from!
That's way cheaper then going to a restaurant, AND she stated in the title "When you are NOT in the mood to cook", which means, NO she is not going to cook meat and veggies.
Jeez.0 -

It's so awesome that you wander the internets scolding random strangers. Great job!!!0 -
This is a disaster! Sodium, fat, processed and fried foods, simple carbs...I only go to the deli to get picnic foods for fishing and camping trips and so on. Very rare occasions when I know there will be hiking involved.0

Sure it's her choice, but it's not good advice for those trying to eat healthily and that's what this forum is all about.0 -

the forum is also for people to be POSITIVE, and these comments are not! I'm sure we can all nit-pick what everyone else eats, too. She did it for one day, her choices were not that unhealthy, so everyone needs to get over it.0 -

Whether or not deli food is healthy is debatable, not only based on the food but for the person. The argument that going to the deli at all is somehow unhealthy by necessity is a weak one. If she had said, " 5000 cal worth of potato salad 5days/week" then you might have a point.
As far as it being just as a easy to broil some meat and steam some veggies as someone else posted, obviously this was just a treat.
Sometimes being healthy includes treats. See what I did there?0 -
I really don't see the point in a discussion where you're antagonized for disagreeing. I'm not trying to be negative but I'm not going to support going to a deli as a valuable tip for people trying to lose weight on a Food and Nutrition forum on a fitness website. I'm sorry but it's just not good advice and it doesn't make sense.0

not sure when something became unhealthy just because it came from a grocery store deli. last time i checked salmon was fairly healthy. so is fresh fruit. so is soup.
there is also room in a healthy diet (using the word as what we eat, not a specific plan) for chicken parmesan, meatballs, spicy buffalo wings, sandwiches, sushi and other things i have seen at the deli. i don't find any of these food to be 'bad' or unhealthy.
our deli is great! it has a lot of choices available other than 'sodium, fat, processed and fried foods, simple carbs'. actually the majority of our deli options aren't like that. if yours doesn't have anything other than fried chicken and potato salad, that's too bad. the tip probably won't work for you then.

I love that the OP has stayed polite and positive through this whole thread! Well done! There are some pretty healthy choices at our deli too. I don't worry much about sodium either because I don't retain water not sure if it because I drink so much water or what. ANyway that sounds like a nice dinner, and i bet the family time was worth the splurg.0

You're making a lot of assumptions about what exactly she and her family ate. I would guess those assumptions based on your own experience with your own deli, but those experiences obviously shouldn't be used to judge the OP's actions.
And let's be honest, you weren't just "not supporting" anything she said. You were being antagonistic yourself based on facts that you simply don't have.
So if you'd rather not eat at your deli, by all means, don't.0 -

Oh noes! Sodium! Fat! Carbs! Don't eat any of those things they are super unhealthy!
Dude, what?
I totally have days like this - you can pick up a protein, a salad, and some fruit and its not the cheapest thing ever but its also not the most expensive plus its tasty and cooking AND dishes free.0 -
Love a Mediteranean cheese board, olives, sliced tomatoes, humus, fruit, a good bottle of wine. Great for hiking or before hitting the town. Nothing like a good deli0

Geez, there are a lot of people on the forums that never have an off day tonight. So this wasn't the perfect healthy food day for this OP and her family. They had a fun time together. That is important too. It's not as if she said they eat this way every day!0
