How is everyone going to cope with Thanksgiving? With the aunt who made your favorite treat just for you?

At my WW meeting this morning we talked about planning ahead. I know what I'm going to eat and I plan to exercise a lot. How about you?

I don't plan on coping. I am running a 5k the morning of and then I am going to eat my heart out. I don't plan on any self control. I have been working my *kitten* off all this time staying strict to a good meal plan. I plan on over doing it on Thanksgiving.

OP: Great nickname - that was my favorite after-school cartoon! LOL!

Im staying on plan. Our menu is already planned out. Everything has been purchased for the things Im prepping/making. Working as a chef, I have access to alot of great exotic foods from work.... fresh herbs, ingredients, and meats as well. My husband and I will eat good, but its all going to be healthy, fresh-from-scratch and delicious...

forgot to mention: I dont believe in coping with anything. Its either you eat bad, you eat good, or you have a happy balance. For me, with the health problems I have, I cannot ever do the 'happy balance'... its put me in the hospital (damn food allergies and sensitivities), which is why Im committed to my WL efforts... I havent lost 66lbs on a whim for no reason, thats for sure!

If you go in thinking you are coping, then you may more than likely struggle.... change your way of thinking!
  • That day I won't be tracking and logging. I plan on just eating a little bit of everything without going over the top. The next day, move on and go on like normal. I don't think you should miss out on Thanksgiving dinner. You can still eat it if you are smart about it.

This is a good idea and made me think I should actually log the day instead of just going for everything I want to eat. I think I may enter my recipies in tonight and plan around the calories that way.

I'll make sure the biggest thing I have on my plate is turkey, since it is a lean protein. Just a little bit of sweet potato casserole (and make adjustments to lighten it up), cornbread stuffing, and jellied cranberries. One roll. We'll see how that all goes before I even consider dessert.

The good news is that I don't eat a lot during the first part of the day, as I am insanely busy with cooking and prepping everything. :)

I'm running a 5k in the morning then I plan on running home from the race, which will be about 10 miles total. I'm trying to prepare everything as healthy as possible and last but not least, portion control!

It's one day in my life, I enjoyed myself and ate whatever I wanted, and that was a month ago......Canadian thanksgiving has come and gone.
  • I actually meant coping with the people. The food pushers. Actually I don't think I'll struggle since I am going in with a plan. Just usually I go to Thanksgiving and eat too much. I don't plan to do that this year. I plan to be in control. So for me yeah I guess that's coping. Call it what you want but my "plan' is to be successful.

Everyone answered your post correctly.. whether its the meal or the people... there shouldnt be any feeling of coping, period. Its either you do, or you dont...because you decide on how things will go for you...
  • You know it's a bit presumptuous to tell me how to think.

WOW, I didnt tell you how to think...... no need to make assumptions either..
I was expressing another point of view where the word 'coping' can actually be a negative...
  • Oh I guess you didn't. You told me how to "feel". All I wondered was what people were doing for Thanksgiving.

    How am I doing Thanksgiving?
I am going to eat plenty of my favorites, but ditch the stuff I don't care for, or that isn't special for the feast. I am making the sweet potatoes, cranberry relish, and spinach casserole for the dinner. I am making them a bit healthier than the recipes state, but not totally ruining the dishes (more veggies than the recipes call for, but still using real butter, cream, and sugar in the recipes). I plan on eating alot of that, fresh fruit, salad, etc. BUT skipping the store bought rolls, and the mashed white potatoes (made from a box). I'm eating the pumpkin pie, but probably not the crust, just the filling and whipped cream.
I plan on going for a nice long run in the am. And only drinking one or two glasses of wine with the meal. Oh, and I'm bringing veggies and hummus to snack on while my mother-in-law finishes cooking the meal because we never eat anywhere near the time she says it'll be ready.

My C25K workout naturally falls on Thanksgiving morning; compounding that with water will keep me from eating much for dinner. Our family is super into processed, box stuff, so it shouldn't be hard to deter myself from that. I'm bringing a few dishes that I can stick to and know I'll be in the clear.
  • Well today was Thanksgiving #1 at my church. What I did was I had my favorites but not a lot. I didn't have seconds. I did have my pumpkin pie WITH coolwhip. Actually I had breakfast, the big lunch, and a bowl of cereal and really stayed within my calories. I also did do a two mile walk. Like Maddy I didn't eat the things that weren't my "favorites" but I did have all my favorites. The day went a lot better than I anticipated. I decided not to help prepare but instead I helped clean up. That seemed to work better for me.

Now Thursday will be a little bit tricker because it's at my brothers and his wife is an EXCELLENT cook. I'll try to exercise all week (which I had planned on doing anyway) and just not overindulge. I'd really like to lose this week and not just maintain. I had a good loss last week and I want to keep going... It takes me a long time to lose weight as I have a very low thyroid (controlled with medication) and I just don't lose very quickly. I walked four miles 5 days last week and that seemed to really make a huge difference. I hate that it's getting colder. :( I also started going to the gym again. I just had surgery 5 weeks ago and got the ok from my doctor. I hadn't been able to walk or work out for months prior to surgery so I'm very excited. I am also taking it slow. I've been walking for a couple weeks now and it's helping me heal very well.
  • The way I see it, Thanksgiving comes once a year - I think its okay to indulge a little bit as long as you don't go overboard. Like my mom always says, "Everything in moderation."

Personally, I plan on loading my plate up with veggies and eating those first so I make sure I get in my healthy foods first (this will also fill me up quickly to keep me from over eating my comfort foods). I am also going to bring a half gallon of Wawa's diet green tea with me so I'm not tempted to drink any soda or juices high in sugar and preservatives. But, when desert time rolls around I probably am going to have a scoop or two of chocolate ice cream and maybe a brownie because these are items I don't eat on a daily or even a monthly basis. Moderation is key.

I also plan on going for a 2.5 mile run in the morning to get my exercise in.
