I would resume your normal eating plan.
I would also go into the gym and enjoy setting PR's and feeling strong as hell from the extra calories the day before.

I usually end up eating the same as usual. Unless I wake up still feeling full and then I take it wasy and eat less. I say listen to your body.

I usually shave off 100-200 calories for a day or two but my calorie allowance is high enough that it doesn't really affect me.

haha it wasn't THAT bad... just a couple of handfuls of dried fruit and some jellybeans probably put me over by 200-300 cals?

Look at her diary, she should be having cheat days, way more than 300 calories though.

I don't even consider it a 'cheat' unless my net goes over maintenance. My goal for a 1 lb per week loss is 1210 but my maintenance is 1710. I always eat close to 1210 net, sometimes just a bit over and sometimes just a bit under. But I like to be within about 50 cal in either direction on a good day. I've had days where I went over my net goal by 350 but even 350 over my net goal is still 150 under maintenance, so I don't consider it a cheat at all since it's still at a level to lose weight. Plus I like the theory that mixing it up and giving your body a little extra now and then, even during weightloss, can be a good thing. It's certainly good for my mental state to not freak out over it. LOL. I'm trying to lose weight and get in shape, not give myself a complex. LOL

That reminds me I need to go eat another 100 cal so I won't be too low for the day....

True to what Sidesteel said about enjoying the calories in the gym the next day. I learned this today actually. Future cheat days will be the day / night prior to some gym time.

I would just go back on track the next day.

I usually go back to normal and don't go over for the rest of the week. And if I can I'll shave a few cals off the next few days if not oh well

I don't find them to be pointless at all. The mental benefits of having a spike day every week for me are invaluable. I plan to lose a minimum of 117 lbs so I'm going to be at this for a long damn time...there's no way I'm going to make myself suffer through YEARS of weight loss without ever having "cheat" days. Why on earth would I deprive myself for that long & think I'd never just lose it & binge myself sick one day, then hate myself for "failing"? Do you know how many posts I see on this site EVERY DAY from people who did just that?

I don't do cheat days. I intentionally create a calorie surplus one day a week but it doesn't benefit me to give it a negative connotation by calling it cheating. I work my *kitten* off 6 days a week to meet my targets & exercise, so I allow myself a one-day break from the planning & eating healthy stuff.

If you told me I could lose 5 lbs a week if I just stayed in a deficit for the next 12 months straight without ever "cheating" I would stick with what I'm doing because I prefer to enjoy my life, which includes enjoying food without restriction once in a while.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I just ate a whole pizza. You call that pointless. I call it delicious.

I can't see what constitutes a 'cheat' day here... although you may be thinking/asking hypothetically.... ? i would say go back to normal and maybe add a little actually -- to get your calories/nutrients up a bit.

Then that's not a cheat day.

Look at her diary, she should be having cheat days, way more than 300 calories though.

  • I look at my weekly deficit and base my calories to reach that deficit... so one day I might eat 2400 the next 2000 or 2200 everyday for that week...as long as the average is my goal that's fine

I had a cheat day yesterday. It wasn't planned or anything, I didn't decide to have a cheat day, I just didn't log, binged a bit, and ended up WAY over my calories. Like, by about 1000 cals! Bit of a shock to the system but what harm, it'll make me realise the next time.

In terms of the week, there were days I was a couple hundred under, so overall I was probably about 300 cals over for the week. So, I won't lose the pound I was aiming for but hopefully I won't put on weight.

I enjoyed yesterday, not worrying about the cals, and I enjoyed every bit of the food, so certainly think there's a point to it.

Cheat days may not have a point to some people, or no nutritional/weight loss point to others, but to many they certainly have a motivational point. Enjoy them and use them to motivate you to work harder.

Uhmm, have you ever hears of leptin? Or stress hormones? Having a cheat day is actualy beneficial. Good way to get things moving. My weight wouldnt move for 2 weeks, not even 0.01lb, even though I was working my a** of and eating well. Then I took a cheat day - 1800 cals over my maintenance, mostly carbs and fat. Worked hard at the gym the next day, and day after lost 1lb. Gonna do it every week now :)
