So fat my treadmill won't work....

So I finally got off my butt today determined to exercise. Yay! I finally got the treadmill out my mother in law gave me a year ago and got on it for the first time. It would not move. So.....I asked my husband. He got on it and it moved. In fact he spent some time showing me how well it moved. It is a treadmill that is not electric. He was supportive but I am totally embarrassed and frustrated about this.

Also, been okay on my first day of my diet, or lifestyle change, as my Dr. calls it. But would someone be willing to offer me ideas based on my food journal? See, I sit in my car most days, driving. I get these horrible cravings for junk. My new plan set up by my Dr. is to eat all day long. But it is hard for me to eat good stuff. Any suggestions on snacks and lunch items? Thanks. :)

I think mechanical treadmills are generally difficult to use. It doesn't want to help at all!

I would try and eat 6 times a day scheduling a.m. p.m. and evening snacks around my meals. It helped a lot. Start walking every chance you get until you get the treadmill working! You can do it. Park further away, take stairs, walk down the hall to talk to someone instead of calling. All the steps add up.

Well first of all, congrats on making the first step towards a healthier lifestyle!! That in itself is definitely great :-) As for the exercising, I agree with irsheyes, start by just walking outside until you lose enough to use the machine. Outside is more fun anyway!

My "go to" snacks are usually fruit, an apple or orange. If im feeling more hungry I will eat 3 whole wheat crackers with natural peanut butter, or a handful of almonds.
Just take 1 day at a time. Every morning get up and PROMISE yourself that you will be motivated toward your health that day only. Don't look at the big picture, just do everything you can to be proud of yourself each day.

I'm sorry about this. It totally sucks!
I'm 276 lbs and can totally relate since most ellipticals or treadmills sold at a decent price don't go any higher than 250 lbs.
So you basically need to lose weight first, a decent bit even, before you can attempt to use the exercise equipment! Kinda stupid isn't it?
Like the previous comment, go ahead and just take walks out doors. If the weather starts to go downhill, what works for me is Leslie Sansone's tapes. Its indoor walking and it's great!
    There's a 1 & 2 mile starter tape that is excellent!
As for the snacks, heck side salads at drive through aren't too bad, nor are grilled snack wraps with honey mustard.
Also packing your own lunch might help you tons. A cooler with some drinks and snacks on the go.
From fruit & veg with dips, to salsa/whole grain chips, small pack of cookies, sandwiches and wraps, home made salads, etc.
And if you are used to eating junk, don't deprive yourself all the way. It's ok to sneak in a cookie or something tasty here and there, cutting out everything will only make you crave it more which ends up in binges and being back to square one!
Well, good luck with your lifestyle change and don't despair, you'll be rocking that treadmill VERY soon! :)

And agree with you! Walking outside is more refreshing and the time goes by so fast.

Walking outside is much more fun! Have a look at the recipe board to get some ideas. Planning is the key. Work out what would fit in with you and plan what you will eat in advance. Then you will not be waiting to be hungry to decide what you are going to eat.

You will need to put a bit of effort into preparing and planning, but once you have it in place it will be natural. Losing weight is 80% what you put in your mouth and 20% exercise. Just make a decision and put in place a plan for success. Also, don't make it a lose or fail situation. We all have setbacks, bad days and failures, but we pick ourselves up and move on and try to do better tomorrow.

    You can do it!

    Hi,
Forget the treadmill, manual ones are hard to use, they are a pain.
Forget the embarrassment, I'm sure it's not the only time your weight has embarrassed you. We all know that feeling.

Like others have said if you can go outside and walk all the better. If not, then just move more than you have been. Small steps lead to big steps.
    Just get moving somehow.
I walk around at home while watching TV or listening to music.
What about the wonderful around the clothes line walk.

I got my self a WII Fit Plus and am loving how it gets me moving. It's fun.
You say you are in the car a lot..do the 'park the car further away thing', go for a little walk when you stop. 5 min is more than no minutes.
As your confidence gathers and you adjust to a new way of thinking you will be surprised at what you're capable of doing.

Good luck, add me if you like.

It's great you're taking frist steps
As far as the treadmill is concerned, I think those kind of trendmills are hard to use, and at this point you need something that actually helps you...not frustrates you
Modern programmable trendmills are great...because they can start you slow, and you can build up speed and resistance naturally as your heatlh improves, but I have to admit...they are expensive
Something I'm going the look into is renting equipment
I get bored with the same thing all the time, so I don't want to invest a ton on a elliptical or bike, then hate it in two months
Once you find the right activity, it makes working out much more enjoyable

similar things have happened to me and in the past (and hell probably now) i would take them to heart, which would make me depressed which would cause the overeating which would make the first situation worse.

thing is to remind yourself your on this journey for you, and that you want to do it, so dont't let the little things get in your way.

for me, im terrified of sitting on chairs ive not sat on before, and when i did run the half marathon there were boys on a bridge shouting "oi fat girl" at me, i let it get to me and yanno what i really shouldnt have done, had they attempted to do what i was doing at that moment, they would have failed.

oh and manual treadmills are a pain in the *kitten*, :) you will defeat it.

    Sorry, you asked about food.
you need to pack lots of snacks by the sound of it.
    fruit, crackers
    snack bars
    carrot sticks

just make sure you total the calories as you will be surprised how quickly a few pieces of dried fruit etc can add up.
Hopefully someone will come up with some great ideas for your snacks.

Set achievable goals for yourself. If you can't imagine eating carrot sticks for a snack, choose a yogurt you like and top it off with fruit and granola to make it special. Set your weight loss goals low and don't worry if you go over your calorie goal at first as long as you know your making progress. Your definitely going to eat less calories if you are making an effort and logging your calories. I'm currently breastfeeding so I'm having a really difficult time losing even though I'm putting the work in, but I know it will pay off in the long run! I would love to be friends if you want to friend me:)

I see you are from Wisconsin too! I understand your dilemma with the treadmill! Not exactly great weather for going on walks outside! I like doing workout videos, cleaning and I'm considering trying snowshoeing. I've heard it pretty fun and I live in the country on a county road so I can't really open my door and go for a walk! But I could on the trails with snowshoes:) I actually don't like cleaning but it can be a workout:)

This is a great post believe it or not! You made the first move and that is AWESOME!!!! Don't let the treadmill dictate what you can or cannot do! Suggestion, Leslie Sanson (http://www.walkathome.com/challenge/introducing-the-december-challenge/) has great walk at home DVD's relatively inexpensive. Seeing as the weather might not be the friendliest, you can certaily start with those DVD's and they are GREAT!! I am a real advocate for her walks and its so easy, anyone can do it! There are lots of 100 calorie snacks out there that you can carry with you since you sit and drive a lot. The chocolate covered emerald almonds are great, the fiber one 90 calorie brownie is good if you are a sweet tooth craver as am I! This is a great place to start......best of luck to ya!

Wow, thanks everyone! So many responses, I was not expecting this much. I am going to give some DVDs a chance. Walking outside is about to get very difficult for me due to where I live and weather. Otherwise, I would do that. I like being outside. Thanks again for the support. I also made my food journal public. I used to do Leslie Sanson and I did like it. I know somewhere I have one of her DVDs.

I want to snow shoe but I have visions of me falling through the several feet of snow and getting stuck......:) I am also in the country, and yes, they don't plow here either! I am sure it is the same for you.

Hummus (Sabra brand is my favorite) is a great snack with those Kashi whole grain pita chips. 70 calories for two tablespoons of hummus and about 60 calories for 6 pita chips. Doesn't sould like a lot but it's suprisingly filling.
