Does anyone know if NOT brushing (combing) your hair is bad for you? I'm asking because i have long (down to my butt) fine hair. I don't brush or comb my hair. I never found the need to. I few runs through the hair with my fingers & i'm good to go. Is that bad? I went for an annual physical check up and my dr asked me how often i brush my hair.. and i said "I don't brush my hair" and she said "you're supposed to lie and say you do" and then laughed. huh?
I feel like when i say "I don't brush my hair" people react as if i'm saying "I don't brush my teeth"!
BTW, my hair never tangles unless it's a SUPER windy day.

Must be nice. My hair tangles when I'm just sitting doing nothing. Well, it did before I cut it short. I think it's weird not to brush your hair (personal opinion, nothing more), but is it unhealthy? Probably not.
Also, why on earth did you doc ask you that? LOL. That's so random!0 -
I don't brush my hair either, because it gets washed and combed out, then it doesn't tangle, so why damage it with a brush? My hair is curly, fine and long, and it makes it frizzy to bruch or comb it. I like the natural curl look.
Do your thing, girl. It's your hair.0 -
Do you brush/comb/pick it out after washing it though?
That's all I really do. I pick it out after I wash it and that's it for the day.0 -
I hope not. I very rarely brush my hair, and it's most of the way down my back.0

The only this I know that's bad for your hair is if your brush/comb/run fingers through if your hair is WET. Your hair gets weaker when its wet so it will break easier. So if you do anything to your hair just make sure it's dry first0

In theory, you should comb it when wet and only brush when dry.
I've never had a doctor ask me if I brush my hair. The only thing I ever do with mine is comb leave-in conditioner through my hair when I get out of the shower. I try not to mess with it too much lest it get oily.0 -
I rarely brush my hair, but I use a comb when I straighten it so I guess I comb it?0

What a strange question your doctor asked you! What does that got to do with your physical health?
On another note, I am so jealous you don't ever have to comb your hair. Mine would all tangle up if I didn't.0 -

NEVER comb/brush your hair wet! EVER! It will give you bad split ends, when your hair is wet it weakens because your hair is a protein fiber, protein fibers get weaker when when so it break WAY easier.0 -
 I just think your doctor might've been admiring your hair and has a sense of humor. :bigsmile:0
-
I never have to. It would be sort of silly to brush or comb hair that's maybe .3"-.5" long.0

HAHA Yes, my dr asked me cause i'm crazy. If i feel any bump or anyhing strange anywhere, I get concerned. This time, there was a small bump on my head... it was nothing.
I run my fingers through my hair after i shower (wet).
What's the difference with "combing" and "brushing" your hair other than the tool you use?????
See... i'm crazy, so that's why i asked if it's bad to not brush/comb. haha
thanks all!0 -
Using a natural fiber brush on dry hair helps distribute the natural oils produced at your scalp through your hair strands. It can help your hair be stronger and more shiny.0

According to google, wet hair is weaker. You should use a wide tooth comb and startfrom the bottom with wet hair. Whatever. I don't even own a brush, so............:ohwell:0

If I didn't brush my hair, I would have homeless-type dreads after a day.0

Lol... what the heck?! Was this a hair doctor? How could brushing/not brushing your hair affect your health? Very silly if you ask me... I don't have long hair, but I barely brush mine. Washing and conditioning is enough for me...0
-
Maybe the doctor was concerned with things like head lice or something? I can see how maybe brushing your hair might help prevent those types of things...0

Not to assume anything, but if the doctor asked you, maybe it appears to be greasy or brittle or something? The condition of our hair says a lot about our health. Maybe next time you should ask why he/she asked that, and if they noticed anything about your hair.0

Many women spend more time than they would like to, getting their hair presentable. The "you're supposed to lie and say you do" was a joke, with the premise being that it will make her less envious of you.
If you're still in doubt, why not call and ask? Better to be sure than to worry about it, right?
Don't read too much into it. Enjoy the hair that many woman would love to have -- or, so I hear.0 -
brushing dry hair will distribute natural oils, that's why it was a popular saying to brush 100 strokes, it will also help remove any dry flaky skin from the scalp and just feels good, especially if you can get someone else to do it. I've been a hairstylist for 30+ years, wet hair stretches more than dry hair and this can make it break easier so when it's wet you want to use a pic or large tooth comb. They move through the hair with less resistance (less breakage). If you are not prone to dry skin and have no tangles I don't see why not brushing would be an issue. I live in Colorado, everybody here has a dry scalp0
