Salad...*cringes*

I absolutely hate salad. I don't like lettuce at all. But I really really want to like it. I know that sounds weird, but salads are so pretty and healthy that I really want to like them. I just don't. Do you think if I make myself eat a little salad here and there that I will learn to like it?
Is there anything you have learned to like that you used to despise?

Don't force yourself to eat it or you'll just be miserable and not want to stick with your new lifestyle. If you want to eat a 'salad' but hate lettuce, make one with a different leafy green (like spinach perhaps) or make it with no leafy greens at all but with other veggies. I make one that is diced up tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, and feta cheese with fat free italian dressing and that's yummy. It's a salad but without lettuce. I use things that I like. Honestly lettuce is not exactly exciting. It's all about what you put in there with it. Try diced up chicken, eggs, various nuts, different cheeses and veggies, etc, and find something you like if you want to have it as an option. But if you just plain hate it, don't make yourself eat it. You will only be miserable and resent the new habits you are trying to form. There are plenty of ways to get in healthy veggies without making yourself eat things you hate. :-)

There are several things that I wouldn't have even CONSIDERED trying before that I've tried now. Some I like, some I don't. I've tried eggplant (eh), spaghetti squash (yum!), cucumbers (never touched them before, now I enjoy them in that 'salad' I mentioned), sweet potatoes (good potential in recipes), etc. Try out some different things and find the ones that you like.

You could make a caprese salad of just basil, tomato and mozzerella. There is no lettuce required.

Don't eat food that you hate.

Make a salad without the lettuce...no one said you have to have lettuce. Mix tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, onions, etc. and add some salad dressing. Maybe you would like that? And is it all lettuce that you hate? Maybe try fresh spinach leaves (that's what I use instead of lettuce) or Romaine instead of basic shredded lettuce. You could also find some really good salad dressings: light honey mustard, fat free caesar, balsamic vinaigrette, raspberry vin., etc. that would change the taste completely.

And I used to LOATHE oatmeal but I eat it a lot now that I found the flavored instant oatmeals, especially in this cold weather now.
  • I feel totally silly for thinking it had to have lettuce now! lol I knew it didn't have to, but I suppose it never dawned on me to make a different type of salad. Ha, thanks everyone. :)

You could try side salads before meals at restaurants, or bring little ones to lunch. Finding a good salad dressing is key but also tricky: if it's good enough, you'll want to eat veggies with it just for the dressing conveyance, but you have to be careful for the calories in the dressing.

I also mostly like "salads" that have no lettuce--just mixtures of veggies like cucumbers and tomatoes, or avocado and salsa.

Salads aren't necessary to be healthy, so don't beat yourself up too much if you never like them.

I tried to make myself eat a salad every day and one day after about a week I put some salad into a bowl, ran over and threw up in the kitchen sink!
I can eat a salad once in a while, but I'll never force myself to eat one every day again. There are plenty of vegetables out there, salads are only one way of preparing them. My favorite way to add vegetables just now is soups. Current favorite: carrot and leek soup.
  • Do you like spinach? It makes a tastier and healthier salad base than lettuce. Or you could eat a salad without any leafy greens. I don't really get the whole "acquired taste" thing. Seems to me, if something is an "acquired taste" that just means you can convince yourself it isn't as bad as you thought. So don't make yourself eat lettuce. There are a lot of tastier, healthier choices out there.

My husband LOVES my Broccoli-Bacon-Ranch salad!!!

Fresh cut broccoli florets, sun-dried tomato strips, red onion, strips of yellow bell peppers, matchstick carrots, fresh cooked bacon cut into strips, garlic, scallions, and a homemade ranch dressing....

Goes very well with a nice hearty steak or salmon dinner!

Yep you totally do not need lettuce to have a salad. Just google your favorite fruit or veggie and add "salad" to the search and you will find tons of stuff.

    Fennel salad
    carrot salad
    broccoli salad
    cucumber salad
    spinach salad
    apple salad
    tomato salad
    on and on and on.....

    Have fun!

I like salad greens, particularly arugula, but I like to cut them into little tiny strips. I just like the texture better. I really don't like big leaves. So maybe there would be a preparation method you'd like better. I also like raw kale for salads--it's crunchy and has a lot of flavour. That's just me. And I will say that I used to DREAD salad and now look forward to it. So it is possible.

I can eat lettuce, but it's not my favorite. However, I eat a salad almost every night. Mostly it consists of cucumber and onion (always) but the rest varies--tomatoes, radishes, carrots, cilantro, mushroooms. I rarely have lettuce.

So, salad can be whatever you want it to be!!!

there are so many different salad types out there, try different ones, I used to drown them in salad dressing to like them, now I like them with just a little salad dressing. At the beginning I just put a bit of lettuce in my bowl and mainly tomatoes, cucumber and bell pepper, now it is mainly lettuce, I guess you can get used to something and even like it after a while.
Same with tea, I used to only drink tea with 3 teaspoon of sugar now I can drink it even without sweetener and like it, I think the taste changes.

I'm with all the posters, I hate "lettuce" especially the iceberg you find everywhere. Baby spinach is my favorite and lots and lots of diced veggies, whatever is in the fridge and sometimes fruit. One of my favorite lunches is coleslaw, mandarin oranges, almonds and diced chicken. Yum

salad can be anything you throw together.

I do figs, hearts of palms, crumbled bacon, crumbled goat cheese. When figs are out of season I use whatever is in.

I like em with salsa on top. Like, LOTS of salsa on top. It's more like a jar of salsa, on lettuce.

I usually include lettuce in my salads, but they also include liberal amounts of onions, fresh jalapeño, tomato, zucchini, carrots, mushrooms, croutons, and berries or chopped dates. That's just an example.
  • Oh, thanks for all these great ideas! I seriously never would have thought up all of this. I am gonna work on trying some more veggies now.

I make Greek salad with cut-up cucumber, different types of bell peppers, tomato, onion, and light feta with Kraft low-calorie Greek dressing. So yummy, healthy and still pretty and colorful, with no lettuce!! Oh, and you could throw olives in there too if you like em :)
  • Someone already mentioned arugula which I highly recommend too, as it gives salad a peppery tang. (Trader Joe's do inexpensive bags of it.) I usually want to make a quick salad, so I put a bag of arugula, baby (heirloom) tomatoes, baby carrots and some chopped red pepper in a big bowl. Then I toss it in low sodium soy sauce, or sprinkle black pepper or red pepper or paprika on the top with a couple of sprays of olive oil. The freshness is amazing! If I add something different like mushrooms or cucumber or chick peas, I can really taste the difference. Good luck!
