my baby boy is having trouble pooping, the last few days they have been hard turds, and he cries when he pushes them out, nothing has really changed in his diet, he drinks lots of water, is on whole milk and eats 3 meals and 2 snacks, we make sure he gets a good mix of veggies, fruit and proteins, he also gets grains like wheat, oatmeal and pastas.

your all a smart bunch, thought I would canvas the brains of many parents for advice.

thanks!

He is on whole milk? Or formula? How old is he?

Adding a small amoung of DARK karo syrup to his bottle is safe and effective. So is apple juice and prune juice.

put about an ounce of pure orange juice in his bottle with about 2-3 ounces of cooled boiled water. Should help. Make sure he gets water between feeds too x

1 teaspoon of pancake syrup ( like Karo)in 2 oz of water. My pediatircian gave me this tip when my kids were little and it worked like a charm.
  • apple juice really helps, never did the syurp thing.

my son had a few weeks of consitipation and we used prune and apple juice. He eventually stopped having it....it seems like every kid has a bad bit of constipation and it's always scary the first time around. I was always too scared to use the syrup, though many of my friends did and it worked too!! Good luck!

If he is over 6 months old, jarred pureed prunes work wonders.

Have you been giving him Tylenol for teething? If so that can make them constipated. try pureed fruit, it works wonders

Pear juice, apple juice, prune juice; increased fiber; a small amount of Miralax in the juice or water; glycerin suppositories will ease the pain from pooping

Apple juice and prune juice (or jarred prunes) work wonders. Let us know how it works out.

Apple juice and a little Karo syrup in his bottle. Also when hes in pain lay him down on his back and move his legs like hes pushing peddles on a bike. It will help relieve some pain.
  • Yogurt or something with probiotics. Blueberries were always a miracle worker with my kiddies.

My daughter is like that at the moment too. She eats a lot of different vegetables, and drinks fresh juice but still struggles to go!
The doctor has given her some medicine, and advise us to try and get her to have prunes/prune juice.

    Maybe speak to your doctor

Hope he feels better soon :)

    Prune juice or puree.

He may have a dairy or lactose allergy or sensitivity, constipation can be a symptom of that. Could try removing it for a couple weeks to see if it's that or something else.

apple juice, prunes, prune juice (depending on age, mixed with some water), if he is eating a lot of bananas, cut back some, same with rice.

All 3 of our kids had a short phase of that. We used prune juice, and if it was very bad a glycerine suppository.

glycerine suppositories. get the pediatric size and then split that in half. you have to hold it in or the muscles will just force it right back out. but they really do work. my middle daughter was always constipated, for some reason.

Apple juice and prune juice are the best, safest and fastest ways to help him out.

Also cut back on his dairy if you can, even just a little. Especially if you're giving him cheese or yogurt, as those are really good at plugging most people up.

Some babies' tummies can't tolerate whole milk for a while. It's really an individual basis thing. The milk could be contributing.

I'd say cut back on whole milk.

watered down apple juice is great it always gets my son to poop. Also when he was younger and would be constipated I would five him 4 oz of water and mix it with 2 teaspoons of sugar. That did the trick ALWAYS.

This is gonna sound crazy but it worked for my oldest daughter who is 9 now...she still has some issues with her poops(don't tell her I put this on here LOL)
The dr. told me to do karo syrup and we did....but corn syrup is not really what you wanna give your baby, I'm sure! We learned that the canned mandarin oranges worked wonders for her. No idea why they just do. Kids love them so it is not a struggle to get them to eat them. I am not a big fan of juices and we tried prunes every morning with her breakfast and nothing compares to the mandarin oranges.
They even work better than regular fresh oranges. We just got to the point that a can of mandarin oranges became a part of her weekly diet(we only gave them to her about once or twice a week to help keep things going).
Good luck! poor baby. I know how you feel. We tried everything...even those silly glycerin things...yuck!

we used miralax for my son...we thought he was in the corner trying to poop when really he was trying to hold it in because it hurt so bad when it came out...it became such a vicious cycle but the miralax really helped....added to his juice and water once a day...good luck...PS...call your pediatrician before you do any of this

My best advice is to call your doctor. Don't go on the Internet for answers to your baby's issues.

agree wth above i.e. see a doctor if it persists. Exercise is good too is there a chance he has been indoors more if you are int he UK the cold weather could have limited his opportunities for exercise?
  • PRUNE JUICE IS YOUR FRIEND! I even had to give it to my 4 month old. Works great and fast. If he does like it mix with some apple juice.
