P90X calorie burn question .....

I've been doing the P90X program for a couple of weeks. I'm disappointed with my calorie burn. I have a body bugg and it shows that I'm only burning a little over 300 per workout. I am workout out as hard as I possibly can. I'm exhausted afterwards. When I run for an hour my burn is 500+ So my question is; will I burn more calories as time goes on? I seen people say they burn 600 to 800 calories per workout! I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, my bodybugg is wrong or am I just weak? Any thoughts?

I use a HRM, and I burn between 400-600 calories per workout. I'm 53, and weigh 154 lbs. I know that the Body Bugg uses body movement, temperature, etc. for determining caloric burn, and a HRM only uses heart rate. I don't know how real the numbers are, but it seems to work for me.

Are you already in good shape?

When I did P90x I burned usually 200-300 per workout, except for Plyo which was more like 500, but only because I modified some of the moves to make it more difficult. If you're already in shape or don't have much weight to lose you won't burn as much as some other people. So I think those numbers are probably accurate.

Hi, I have been doing P90X for the last 3 weeks myself. I was disappointed I could not find an approximation for the caloric burn in the exercise data base so what I did was use an exercise that was similar in effort and made up an exercise. Do I really burn this amount, I am not sure. I think your body bugg is probably more accurate. I might have to invest in on of those.

depending on which workout, your age, weight, intensity, # of reps, intensity, rest, gender, the calories burned will be different. Most likely the strength days between 300-500 and ply from 400-800.

HRM's use more than HR to calculate caloric burn. HRM's use, age, gender, weight, duration, HR, and an assumed oxygen uptake to calculate calories burned.

THIS. People with higher body fat/weight will burn more calories in these workouts. I average about 350-400 during the normal workouts, with the exception of Legs and Back. I burn an average of 700+ here because this is the hardest workout for me. The majority of my weight is in my lower half, so I know I'm working twice as hard to keep up.

I use my bodymedia fit which is the same thing as a bodybugg. I burn about the same 250-350. I think all the heart rate monitors over estimate by A LOT sometimes!! I was using a HRM and i thought i was burning 500-600 cals/workout when in fact i was not.. So, i was thinking i had to eat 1800-2000 calories/day. HAHAH, when I got my bodymedia, it was like a slap on the face! NO WONDER i was losing weight so slowly. For a 24 hr period with 1-3 workouts the most i burn is 2100-2200 on a normal day. I aim for 2400 everyday. But i was hardly even leaving a deficit before. Now, i am finally losing :) so, although your bodymedia says your only burning 300 cals, thats ALL you need! Bulding muscles makes you burn calories through out the day. What is your avg mets for the day?

Yup I agree with others!! I burn around 200-300 on a workout that I give my all to! I am 5'3" and weigh 112 now that I am in great shape it takes a lot to get my heart rate up now!

I'm not in great shape, but way better then I was a year ago. I've lost close to 60 pounds so I'm within 20 pounds of my goal weight. I'm 5'6" 145, but I am in my late 40s so that may be part of the problem  Its so cold in my area now that I can not run outside and the treadmill bores me to tears! So I figured I'd to a couple of rounds of P90X til spring.I had read so much about P90X burning 800+ calories a workout I thought it'd be perfect.

Well I do have to say, I haven't lifted weights in years. So maybe tearing some muscle will help me burn more calories in the long run.

Thank you all of your input, I really really appreciate it!

As you get stronger you'll be able to push yourself harder and lift heavier. Also muscle is more metabolically active than fat so as you build up more muscle then you'll be burning more calories which is always wicked good
