What do you think a 5'4-5 should weigh

so many conflicting opinions on the Internet, I've seen a lot of people say that the ideal weight for that height is 110-115lbs but bmi calculators all say the
BMI calculators say it should be 8 stone 6lbs For the lowest weight for that height. I'm asking because at my weight now I'm struggling whether to loose a few more pounds or to just accept that 116lbs is ideal for me, any opinions really appreciated xx

I am 5' 4.5" and my ideal weight is 130lbs. I will be quite thin at that weight, with a BMI of 22. Even at my weight now (145) people say I look average.

I am 5 ft 4 and between 118 and 120 lb. (8 st 8) My BMI is 20 which is at the lower end of the range.

You can weigh 140 and still be "healthy" so 110 must be right at the very lowest end of the scale.

If I lost 10lb more I would look too thin.

I'm 5'4" and my doctor has told me that the ideal weight range for my height is 115-145. That is a huge range! I'm aiming for 125 and then will reassess when I get there. In high school I was 110 and was WAY too skinny (scrawny would be a better description) and at my biggest was 180.

I'm 5'4" and the lowest I'd personally like to get is 125. I think 110 would be too low for me--but I have a med/large frame and wide shoulders. I want to end up between 125-128.

It depends on what that weight is made up of. Based on the body fat percentage, two people at the same height and weight could look ENTIRELY different.

I think it depends on both frame and amount of muscle. For instance, I'm currently 130 at 5'4". I have a small frame, so I'm not satisfied with my current look. However, I'd also like to gain some more muscle and become fitter, so this also may affect the number on the scale.

I'd go by body fat. 20-25% will put you at a healthy weight.

Certainly body composition matters. Are you large boned or small boned? How much muscle do you have or want? Don't answer me, answer these questions for yourself. Most importantly, how do you feel? For me, (I'm 5 ft 4.75 in) I feel best between 107 and 113. Much above or below that and I don't feel as good, cardio takes more, endurance goes down. In that range, I can hike all day, or canoe, or climb, or dance...

Btw, BMI is not meant to look at personal fitness, it's meant to gauge a population overall. Try something like this to incorporate bone structure: http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html

It's just my opinion, but if you are struggling to lose more, think about what is happening. You are doing all you are doing and maintaining. So this is what the future will be for you to maintain this weight. Can you live with it? Do you want to have to eat less or move more? You are in a healthy range for your height at your age. Like another poster said, the mirror might tell you what is right for you.

116 lbs is considerably underweight for that height. I am 5'5" and stop getting periods at about 118 lbs, so that's a clear indication that that is too thin for my height, and I have a very small frame. I am about 125, which I am happy with, but even that is quite skinny. I would say for most people 130 lbs would be a good weight for that height.

I think there is no true ideal. You need to base your goals on your own frame and build.

I'm 5'4" and currently weigh 145 pounds. I fit very comfortably into a size 4, have a large frame, and I am quite muscular. I think I look good now, but want to see if I can ditch another 10 pounds.

My mother is my height, but much smaller framed. She weighs the same as me, but wears 2 sizes larger than I do and looks "softer" because she is carrying more fat and less muscle.

116 is not underweight for 5'4", even by the rather flawed BMI calculation. (It works out to a BMI of 19.9, which is still well in the healthy range). You might stop getting periods at 118 lbs, but that doesn't mean everyone at that height will. 118 lbs is actually the heaviest I've ever been (coming back from my honeymoon, where over a two week period I was trying to sample every denver omlette between Nashville, TN and Grand Marais, MN), and I've never had a problem with periods. I've known several girls that height that still have belly fat at 118, which carries a greater risk of heart troubles.

Wow-- some of the posts were scaring me. I am 5'5" and my goal weight is 155. Maybe I am not aiming for enough.. but, trying to lose the 40 pounds to get there seemed unreachable to me. (and please.. I know that there are people who need to lose more.. I am just saying for "me"-- it seemed to be a huge endeavor). I will have to go with the folks who say "look in the mirror"-- Also, I don't want to go just by a number on the scale.. I don't want to be just thin.. I want to look (and be) fit and tone!!

As other posters have mentioned, it really is body-dependent. Warning cool-story-bro time: I'm 5'5'' and I used to weigh 115, but people were guessing my weight to be around 100. My pants were size 00, but I probably made myself osteoporotic at that weight...115 really was too light for me.

Every woman's ideal weight is the number of pounds she weighs when she's happy with what she sees in the mirror and her body is happy with the amount she eats to maintain that weight. If you need to constantly "diet" to stay that weight, it's too small for you.

However, I was easily maintaining at about 110# through my early 20s, but it was way way way too small for me. I didn't look good that thin.

    bonesrw.jpg

I'm happiest around 125-130#. I might be ok as low as 120#.
  • While keeping your body fat less than 25%, at 5'4" I think 125 plus or minus 5 pounds is good. At 5'5" I would add another 3 or 4 pounds.

Most people don't IMO, especially as they get older. I was between 112 and 118 during my late teens/early 20s and that is definitely too thin for me now. I do naturally carry a lot of muscle, though, despite a small frame.

I'm 5ft 3 and half and was told my healthy weight range was between 8st 7 (119lbs) and 10st 7 (147lbs) by a doctor! ... I've just reached the top end of healthy after been 2 stone overweight for about a year. (though didn't start seriously dieting till this June).

I'm hoping to get back to around 9st 6 (132lbs) which I used to weigh before started piling all weight on after mobility problems, but I'm now 42 and seem to be hitting menopause (no TOTM this month) so I don't know if I can get back there.. and whether I'll still look good if I do!

Personally, I believe it is bone structure and age. I am 5'6, in my 20's I weighed 120, in my 30's and 40's I weighed 140. In my fifties. I weighed 150...weird...My friends who are 5"2 weigh 105 to 110. I was a 7 and I would settle for a 10. I think when you are young, you look better thinner. As you age, you look better a bit heavier. My Mom was 5'4 and weighed 100. She was always trying to gain and NO, she didn't have cancer.

It is up to you and these are strictly my opinion I do NOT mean to offend anyone.

I'm 5'4" too and without trying I sit comfortably at 130 (although I'm not happy with that image). I was about 120 in my photo, which is my goal again. That was my pre-baby weight and that's where I felt I looked my best. But it definitely defends on your build, curves, etc. I don't think there is any standard weight for someone of any size. Too many factors playing in...

This totally depends on your shape, ethnicity, how happy you are with your shape etc. To me, there is no 'Ideal' weight, neither should you weight a certain amount. Right now I weigh 167 pounds and am technically a stone overweight yet I have a 28 inch waist and I am fit as a fiddle. I have massive butt yet I am pretty happy with my shape. A lot of people my height look totally different to me. If you are going by BMI then probably around the 140 mark but personally I think BMI is bull.

I am 5'4'' and at my lowest weight of 125, I wore a size zero and all of my bones stuck out. Even my doctor told me to gain some weight ( I probably should have stopped quite a few pounds ago, lol!) The BMI scale is only good when looking at the population as a whole. If you look and feel good where you are now, you should think about moving into maintenance and quit trying to shed a couple of extra pounds.

for my body frame, which is pretty small, i think a BMI of 20 is perfect for me to maintain. If you were 5'4.5" a BMI of 20 is about 118, so i would go for that :D

I am 47 years old and 5' 4.5" at my lowest I was 120 lbs (around 25 years old) and I was too skinny. I think it depends on the person. At both my lowest weight and my highest weight (180 Lbs) I had health issues. I am a medium framed person and 135 is a good weight for me.

Hi! I'm 5' 4 3/4" I'm just about 27, have a medium build, and have a child already. My goal weight is 145 (i wouldn't mind being 135, but I'm not aiming for it). This is my personal goal because I am slightly older, but I have also always had big boobs and been curvey, I like my curves (well minus the extra weight right now) . There is such a large scale range for our height because of the different body structures people have. Just set a realistic goal for yourself first and if you are happy with that weight then start toning with strength exercises. If you are seeing your ribcage then in my opinion you have lost to much weight. Good Luck! :flowerforyou:

If you're going by the BMI chart, the healthy weight range for someone 5'4" is anywhere from 107-145. I'm 5'4", I clearly remember being 105 lbs (and I was taking diet pills and practically starving myself to be that thin - fitting into size 2 and 3 clothing iirc) and it was honestly too small for me. As soon as I went off the diet pills I immediately gained 10 lbs even though I didn't change my eating habits - I felt pretty good at 115 but I wasn't in very good shape (wearing mostly 5's and 7's depending on the brand). I started here on MFP at 165 lbs with a goal to try and get down around 125 - I picked that b/c it's nicely in the middle of the healthy range for my height, and I remember 115 and 130 very clearly and feel like 125 is a good goal based on my past experiences and the fact that I want to have more muscle than when I was 115. And I have a feeling I might fit back into a 7 even though I won't be trying to get back down to 115, simply b/c I'm working my butt off these days and will be in better shape when I get there.

It's really individual. You have to take into account the size of your frame, how muscular you are (muscular people may weigh more but actually fit into smaller clothes b/c their body mass is more compact), and mainly how YOU look and feel at a particular weight. One person might look and feel their best at 125, someone else might look and feel their best at 145. Honestly, and this is hard, but it's might be a good idea to focus less on what the scale is telling you and more on how you feel in your skin and clothes. And if you are not happy with how you look and feel in your clothes and are persistently trying to lose weight but not getting any results, maybe consider if what you REALLY want is to lose weight, or if you just want to look and feel better in your clothes. You can accomplish that w/o losing a bunch more weight, if you change up your exercise routine to help give your new smaller body a different shape.

Good luck on figuring out what's right for you. :-)

They say weight range for a reason. Different people are healthier at different weights, depending on body proportions, age and gender. I saw a lovely post yesterday on "skinny fat" - showing the same person at two different weights. The picture that showed the woman more slim and tone had her weighing 5 lbs more than the picture of her with less muscle tone. For that person, more weight was definitely healthier.

So, the answer is, it depends on a lot of factors. I think we put too much emphasis on the numbers.
