Is it still ok to post a thread asking how to use the search thingy? I did a search looking for a search and got lots of searches but I am still none the wiser.

    Please don't hurt me:

"a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic."

Not belittling "a user", just suggesting that people use the search button. Didn't call out any names, but thanks for playing!

ETA: I didn't realize how much the flower face gets on my nerves until they were all lined up and blinking at me.

Love the line "Thanks for playing".. I say that all the time!

Nice to see others saying it too!

was this really necessary to post...just ignore the stuff you find repetitive instead of being hard on new members.

    Yes, yes it was.

Heed your own advice and ignore this post if you don't like it, instead of being hard on members who are sick of seeing topics over and over.

And there is the beauty of internet forums - you take what you want and ignore what you don't want because, other than the moderators/owners of sites, no one else can really dictate anything at all. Good isn't it

You know what... this is a free forum. If you are sick of certain topics, then nobody is forcing you to open them. Unless the thread title is way off topic (which is rare), you should be able to tell which ones to avoid. Posting this isn't going to stop people from asking questions that have been asked before and nobody should be made to feel like they can't ask a question. Sure... you're not attacking anyone in particular... just EVERYONE who doesn't use the search feature before posting... which is most people. So why even bother subjecting yourself to criticism by posting something that criticizes others?

Especially as thanks for playing is not at all mocking.

Leaving you to your tag team lovefest of inane mockery.

for me, sometimes it is quite refreshing to see a new topic instead of having to read pages and pages of an old one on the same or similar topic. however, sometimes it does get a tad bit boring. i am on the fence here but still i see little point in complaining about this.....
  • LMAO Ok so the repeats are annoying...but who cares...who does it hurt? like some one said before its just the internet...lol.
although I must say seeing you all bicker and argue back and forth over such a STUPID topic is really entertaining this early in the AM. Really guys who cares..it's never going to stop...but thanks for the laugh! lol

Come on people, it's a simple request asking people to do a little background check before they post. Is it really that awful, or do you just need to rally around something?

I think you'll find this is not the first post like this....maybe you should followed your own advice and you could have saved people from reading another moaning post!

    YAY! I  YOU!!

    lol

we all should focus on the reason we join this site in the first place and stop interfering or moan about what others choose to do. if you dont like what others are doing, ignore it, simple!

This is one of the more obnoxious posts I've seen on here in a while. Has it ever crossed your mind that if someone wants to ask a question that they want answers to their question, not a similar one by someone else? Has it crossed your mind that maybe different people will read the question and give a different perspective? Has it crossed your mind that people many people find responses like "It's called the search button" every bit as annoying as you find seeing the same question posted more than once.

Oh, and has it ever crossed your mind that if you see a topic that you don't want to read then not to click on it? It's a simple concept. I do it all the time.

New people join MFP daily and this sort of attitude does nothing but make them feel unwelcome by a few nameless, faceless individuals who think they are some sort of elite group on a message board.

    Win!

Or maybe not, because from now on I'm sure EVERY new person will find this thread and save us all from the horrors of their repetitive questions. How we've survived all of this time without such stellar advice, I'll never know. But thanks to this thread, this problem is now fixed and all is good with the world. I believe the planets may have aligned as well.

I guess it just seems rather pointless and somewhat obnoxious, but if it makes you feel better to post YET ANOTHER "use the search button" thread, then be my guest. You have the same freedoms as those posting "exercise calories" threads, "TOM" threads, and "muscle weighs more than fat" threads.

I know you werent or it wouldnt have been flowers and a grin i was offering  but... Posts like this do come across as such to newbies and those new to the forums. I didnt notice the tools along the top for a while. Also some people just want questions answered for them, everyone is unique afterall.

I know it can be annoying and i did feel the same but i read a post once where someone admitted that they were asking questions just to build a rapport with people because they were lonely, I changed my way of thinking after that.

    Ok, now my head hurts...

On a serious note I think telling people to use the search function isn't awful just unhelpful and not practically useful. I suspect even if users did try it before posting it wouldn't make much difference. There is so much conflicting info out there that trying to filter out the good, useful information especially if you are new to fat loss and dieting and don't have a ton of knowledge is very difficult.

I don't think people should be made to feel uncomfortable for merely asking questions. When I see posts like "I know this is a stupid question but..." it makes me sad. If you do not posses the knowledge how are you supposed to know? There are no stupid questions, only teachers who lack patience.

On a brighter note some of us contribute to the "MFP Unofficial FAQ" group which is an attempt to answer common questions. People should check it out.
  • ^^^ Unofficial FAQ is awesome :D

"Use the search feature" is like the oldest whine in the history of forums! It's neither right or wrong and you'll never have people agree on whether to let duplicate questions go.

And please just say "use" instead of "utilize".

I'm asking because I am genuinely curious, but does it really annoy you that much to see multiple threads about the same topic? I don't understand the hostility. Different people have different reasons for asking their questions, and researching previous threads doesnt always satisfy their individual query. Not too mention that very few people have the patience to pore over sometimes dozens or hundreds of pages of previously asked threads when it can be faster and more personalized to start your own thread.

I'm not trying to sway your opinion one way or the other or contribute to a back and forth snarkfest. I guess I I just honestly don't understand what the issue is and why so many people allow it to bother them so much. Unless some people just like to have something to complain about; in which case, carry on.

Answering because you genuinely asked: Yeah, it does kind of annoy me a little to see the same thread over and over and over again, answering the same questions. I just find it inefficient. It doesn't ruin my day, and it doesn't bother me enough where I would write a giant insulting rant about it, but it bothers me enough to put a short, mostly sarcastic post up.
