    One package saltine crackers

    2 sticks butter

    1 cup brown sugar

    1/4 tsp. baking soda

1 package chocolate morsels (or peanut butter or even butterscotch!)

Line a cookie sheet with foil. Spray with Crisco, then line with saltines. In a pot, combine butter and brown sugar. Bring to a boil, and let it boil for 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and add baking soda, stirring for one minute. Pour over crackers evenly, and then top with morsels. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and spread melted morsels with spatula. Place in refrigerator for at least an hour. Remove and cut with knife. Store in airtight container between sheets of waxed paper.

haha! You have "nummies" - my family has "the egg thing" - yes, that's what we call it. I make a breakfast quiche every year. It's simple - eggs, sausage, cheese.... Prepared the day before, baked Christmas Morning - SO convenient! Served with Cinnamon muffins! MMmmm!!!!

The food I most look forward to is Christmas Eve dinner. We have a german breakfast type meal for xmas eve dinner which looks something like this

    1847580670-fruehstueck.9.jpg

plate of meats, plate of cheeses, buns and different types of breads, pickles (and pickled onions, pickled salmon), hard boiled sliced eggs, then usually a few salads to go with it (german potato salad, herring salad)

it's pretty awesome because it's all cold so we all sit around the table for hours talking and joking around while taking bites here and there, no need to rush

Nice! In Latin America, it's the "sobremesa", the lazy, comfortable chatting that comes during and after a meal. No rush. Good times.

You need to make a video of her making the treat. There will be a day when she won't be here to make it and you'll want to watch the video and future generations to watch it as well. Keep her tradition alive.

My mom makes the best egg noodles in the whole wide world. She's taught us how to make them, but alas .. no one can make them the way she does. It will be a sad day indeed when we get together to make them without her. I'll make sure a bottle of wine is on hand to help me through that day.

My dad's fudge and my mom's peanut brittle - they never come out the same when I try to make them.
  • My family does seafood for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We cook ham and turkey everyday for our shop and it is a blessing not to have to deal with them twice a year!

My favorite holiday treats: pumpkin pie, cream cakes, anything minty chocolate.

Not sure what it's called, but I had this not too long ago, it was wonderful!

For Christmas Eve my folks make crab cioppino. I really don't care for seafood (shocker, that I live by the ocean). I usually make homemade pizza for myself.

My family's all time favorite Christmas dinner is prime rib and raviolis. Unfortunately, the deli that sells these raviolis is about 300 miles away from me (and to ship them up here is not worth the $$ to me). Since, we can't have our favorite, we are doing ham with scalloped potatoes and a vegetable. I haven't decided on what dessert we are having.

Tonight, I am starting my baking extravaganza. I have about 15 different cookies and candies I make every year.

Thinking about making divinity (??sp??) this year!

I make divinity every year and everyone begs for it. I have a recipe for Jell-O divinity that is my family's tradition. I love it, you can make any flavor that they have a jello flavor of. You should definitely give it a try if you're already thinking about it!!!

  • I celebrate Hanukkah and Christmas, so we make a lot. For Hanukkah we make latkes and jelly donuts, plus kugel and some other things.
For Christmas it's mostly desserts. My Mom makes so many kinds of cookies and homemade spice cake, gingerbread loafs, brownies etc.

I'm just happy she hasn't started making anything yet.

    Hanukkah and Christmas?! Excellent!
  • Peanut butter balls, which are basically peanut butter mixed with confectioners sugar and Rice Krispies, then dipped in chocolate and left to cool. Mmm, my mom already made the batch for the year, and it's a daily struggle not to eat all of them in one sitting... <3

My mum always used to make rum balls and white christmas (I think this is an Aussie thing - a rice bubble treat with fruit and coconut and copha). Actually I don't like either of them all that much, so this year I'm going to make chocolate truffles and coconut ice and it will be a serious sugar overload - if you don't see me back on the boards after Christmas it means I didn't survive it!
