would you take scales to a restaurant?

I have seen a few people on here say that they take scales to restaurants with them and was wondering if it was a common thing to do.

Personally I wouldn't dream of it as I would feel a bit of an over the top diet freak and I also think it would make the people I was with feel uncomfortable too! A bit like I'd never ask to take food home but I think that's more of a cultural thing as in the UK its pretty much unheard of.

So what are your views?

I would if measuring the weight would give me a fairly accurate calorie guess... but it wouldn't, because you never know how much of what they're putting in. The caloric content of the "same" bread per weight could vary widely.
  • No i wouldnt - reason because I hardly ever go out to a restaurant so if i did go I want to enjoy it - food included...lol

I wouldn't. If I'm going to a restaurant and I want to log the food I'll just guess. I think it's going overboard especially since going to a restaurant isn't a frequent thing. Do you really want to be that obsessed about it?

I have started taking my scales to mum's place. I tend to over eat when I'm there (amazing food!) so it pays to weigh stuff.

I think that's ridiculous. I would never take a scale to a restaurant when I come home from a restaurant I try to see if they have that exact meal from the restaurant already on here, but if not I will just select something similar its not the end of the world.

no, what else is in the food is going to make a big difference in calorie count.

Nope, I agree with OP in that this is kind of "freak-on-a-diet" behavior. Because this is something I plan to do for the rest of my life, I prefer to pre-plan my meals at restaurants and work my daily calorie allowance around that.

I do, however, bring my own salad dressing!

honestly i always try to make sure i know where i'm going so i can look up the menu online first and decide what i'm going to eat before hand. i wouldn't ever judge anyone who pulled out a scale, cause i get it. i just don't think i'd have the guts to do it.

Never!! Either I depend on nutritional info from the restaurant's website or the location itself, or if it's unavailable, I do my best to find a comparable food in the MFP database later on. But the principle is simply this: if one can't simply relax and enjoy dinner at a restaurant for what it is--without freaking out about the calorie-count of his entree--then one shouldn't be going out to dinner. To those people who bring scales, I say: when you feel more comfortable in your own skin, and you learn to trust your judgment in selecting restaurant entrees, then go out; until then, stay at home and cook yourself a LeanCuisine.

If I'm going to go to a restaurant I just bring along my tupperware with chicken/brown rice & broccoli in it. It's so much easier to count the cals.
