Need advice from ChaLean Extreme users

I am thinking about starting ChaLean Extreme in January. I have about 20 more lbs to lose and I'm hoping with CLX and incorporating my Insanity videos and/or running for additional cardio along with healthy eating I should be able to get these last 20 lbs off and get a more toned body.

I'm looking for some advice on the following from those that have done or are doing CLX:

1) I currently only have 3, 5, 8 and 10 lb dumbells and don't really have the space for a lot more nor did I really want to spend lots of money to get additional dumbells. I'm thinking for CLX I probably need to invest in 15s, 20s, 25s at a minimum. I also have resistance bands but not sure if they will be as effective as the weights. Any advice would be appreciated.
2) In general, about how many calories are you burning on average with the workouts?
3) How much additional cardio do you incorporate (number of days a week, length of workouts, type of cardio)?

Thanks for your help

Just started my 2nd round of Chalean Extreme today. As far as calorie burns, I burn anywhere from 600- 900 depending on the workout, but my calorie burn is higher then most people. CLX has 2 days of Cardio already built in. This time around I'm going to add one extra day of cardio. For weights it just depends on how strong you are. But what you listed for weights is all you should need. I really like this program and I think this time around I'll get more out of it.

If you have any other questions please ask.

Thanks Big Ed. This was really helpful. Many of the reviews I read and even posts on MFP it seemed like I would be up to 25 lbs by the end of the program so I for sure thought I would need more dumbells. I'm pretty strong and I know the 10lb dumbells are going to get less challenging for me pretty soon.

An additional cardio day to make it 3 sounds like a great idea. Thanks for the advice.

By the way, congratulations on earning your Insanity T-shirt. :)
  • I just finished my 5th week of Chalean extreme. I went from doing nothing except lugging my toddler around to Chalean Extreme. You're going to need more weights (or use the resistance bands, there is someone demonstrating how to use them in all of the videos, so as long as you have a wide variety of strengths you should be good). Today's video focused on shoulders/back/legs and I used 20-30 pounds for every exercise. You only do 6-8 reps for this section of the program so you have to lift really heavy.

I am doing couch to 5k while doing chalean extreme and have knee problems, so I skip the cardio portions and only do the weight portions. I also have to skip most leg workouts. I am beginning week 6 of Chalean extreme and C25K on Friday and have lost a dress size and gained a ton of muscle without really changing what I eat.

I burn 250-450 calories doing it, depending on the video. I want to try insanity next, but I'm not sure my joints will be able to handle it...I haven't been able to workout properly since having my son almost 2 years ago and am pleased with what I've done with Chalean extreme and C25k so far!

I'm starting my second round of CLX in Jan. I use the adjustable weights now but started last time with the bands. Personally, I would wait to purchase new weights and look for a deal on adjustable weights. They are a great space saver.

I completely agree with the adjustable weights suggestion. I bought Selecttech weights off of Amazon instead of the Bowflex website and saved a lot of money. Anyway, because of the wide variation of exercises, I need a wide variety of weight. My shoulders use 15 pounds and under, but my legs need much more. I tend to max out on my Selecttech weights with squats, for example. I think the bands would be useful if you get the right ones. I even used the bands for P90X before I had my Selecttech weights and they worked well.

Thanks Nicki and Lya. I had looked into adjustable weights before but had a friend advise me not to get those. He knows a lot about this stuff and I took his advice. He said the regular dumbells would be better. I don't remember what the reasoning was but at the time it made a lot of sense. Seems most of the recommendations I've gotten from my question point me to getting dumbells instead of resistance bands. I don't think the bands I have will provide enough resistance to grow with me as I get stronger.

I still haven't gotten the DVDs yet though so not sure if I'll be able to start in January as planned. We'll see.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

    1) Either get a few more heavier weights or use the bands.
    2) http://imjustme-sarah.blogspot.com/2011/05/calories-burned-in-turbofire-hiits-and.html
    3) I'd hybrid with something else, there are only 2 cardio programs. If you have another BeachBody cardio program use that or consider jogging/power walking, you may get bored quickly with the cardio.
