How long/hard are you working out to burn 1,000+ calories?

I have been seeing various people post that they are burning 1,000+ calories when they are working out and I was wondering what everyone is doing. I consider myself pretty active, I workout 6 days a week for 45 minutes to an hour and I burn between 300-425 per workout (I mostly run). I wonder also if it has to do with how much I weigh, right now I am 132, so it stands to reason that I may not burn as many in the same about of time as others. I would like to get up to burning about 500-600 calories per day, I know that means I have to log more time, but if anyone has any input about what they do and how long they do it to scorch calories, I'm all ears!

I have never burned 1000 cals from exercise in one day so you're not alone. Keep in mind, the more you weigh, the mor eyou burn doing a particular activity. so a 200 lbs woman would burn a lot more than a 140 lb woman perform the same activity, with equal effort.0

i only get around 400 cals per day through exersise. I find it hard to eat these calories0

I don't burn 1000 a day but I do aim for at least 600 every other day. I find that when I do my exercise dvd's I burn a ton more calories then when I am walking/running on the treadmill. I did a 47 minute dvd on Saturday and burned 517 calories! If I did 47 minutes on my treadmill, I probably would have burned 250-300. I do weigh quite a bit more than you though. (170)0

I only burn that much when I run really long distances. I just started doing spin class and although I'm not sure how much I burned because I don't have HRM but I was pouring sweat! Maybe try that and see how much you burn, good luck!

I think trying out classes might get me to burn some more. I want to try out spin really badly, everyone says its awesome! I have also hit a plateau and I think pushing myself to burn a little bit more will help me get over the hump. Plus I'm ready to change things up. Its sooooo effing hot outside right now, and humid (I live in New Orleans). Running is my fav but its like running with lead weights attached to my legs right now.

Running my thing too and I gotta tell ya I didn't think I could sweat so much but in spin it just pours out of you especially if you push yourself! I've been going on 5:45 in the morning and its a GREAT start to my day so take the plunge and try it! :happy: :happy: :bigsmile:

Today I went to my first step class... and wow, what a work out! I knew I worked my butt off, but I came home and logged it, and MFP tells me 40 minutes was nearly 400 calories. Now, I have no idea if that's true or not as I don't have a HRM, but I wouldn't be surprised.
But 1000 calories!?!? I'd need to be working out for hours...0 -
The most I have ever burned was like 800 or was it 600, I can't remember, and that was walking 3 miles up hill pushing a stroller with a 37 pound 31/2 year old. This was one time. I usually burn anywhere from 300- 500 calories.0

The most I've done in one workout was around 800 cals (an hour of butt kickin tae bo).
So... I see how someone can get up to 1,000.

I walk 5 miles a day, 6 days a week, and I burn around 850 calories according to my HRM-- but I am walking at a very brisk pace. On the days that I also add in Wii cardio, I can burn another 200-300 calories, so there are definitely ways to burn 1000 or more in a day. Really depends on how much time you put in and what your intensity is.0

I burn 600-900 calories per gym session I am trucking it litterally- I do cardio and weight training and even when I am hitting the weights I maintain a high heart rate-- I workout for an hour to an hour and a half 4-5 days a week- I need to kick it up to 2 hours 6 days a week though.
I have burned 1100 calories before though-
You can burn alot of calories if your really really pushing yourself- I am not allowed to leave the gym unless I burn no less than 500 calories but if I only burn 500 I don't feel as if I performed to my best ability at the gym and I didn't push hard enough0 -

Im about to do my first spin class next month- the doctor at my practice is paying for it- She has been wanting me to take a spin class for months and now I have no choice the only thing I am not looking forward to is that damn seat making my butt sore0 -
wow 1000 calories i dont even come close. speaking of knowing how many calories you burn doing whateer exercise it may be do you just buy a heart rate monitor and how does that work telling you how many calories you burned?0

I typically burn between 300-650 calories per workout session. I run, spin, weight train and mountain bike. So my calorie burn depends on what I'm doing for exercise.
The most calories I've ever burned per workout has been mountain bike riding. A two hour outdoor ride will get me up to around 1200 calories. Now that the weather is nice outside, I plan to do at least one 2 hour ride per week with my husband who is an avid mountain bike rider. I too was hitting a plateau with calories and this was exactly what my body needed to burn a little more.
I'd definitely suggest more cross training in your case. Your body becomes very efficient at burning less calories for workouts that you do most often (like running). Change it up a bit by cross training, going to group fitness classes like spin and step are great ideas. You'll push yourself harder in a group setting than running on your own!0 -

That does seem high
The most I've burned was about 600 and that was walking/running on the treadmill for about 35minutes then doing J/M level 2 or 3 of the 30 day shred0 -
Today I burned 2200 calories, but I spend over 4 hours at the gym. I am a stay at home mom, so I have plenty of time during the day to workout. I did 1.5 hours on the elliptical trainer. I did 1 hour of water aerobics 1.75 hours lifting weights and .5 hour walking. I split my time up into 2 sessions. I burn the most calories on the elliptical trainer. I burn almost 13 calories per minute but I weigh 211 pounds and I work very hard on the elliptical.0

I'm doing 3-4 hours a day...
30 minutes yoga or pilates
30 minutes abs
45-60 minutes weights or kettlebell
60-90 minutes cardio cycle or run, sometimes kickbox or elliptical as well
usually walk the dog 45-60 minutes a day,

I can't imagine burning 10000 calories. I'm lucky to get 300 or so a day. I'd probably keel over hitting 1000, if possible.:laugh: :laugh:0

Today I burned 800 calories and it was divided between two workouts. The first was a little over an hour of strength training and the second was 40 minutes of cardio.
I'm not sure how people burn much more and eat all those calories. I have a hard enough time fitting in 2 workouts while eating every 3 hours.0 -
I have been jogging 2 miles a day and there was one day that I burned over 1,000 calories. I was really surprised to see that. Now this was one of my first times jogging 2 miles and i weigh about 170 or so. I also like to do sprints with my 2 miles.
I would love to take spinning classes but I don't know any place around where I live that offers them. :sad:

You can burn 1,000 calories in one workout; it depends on what you combine.
I shoot for 700 calories burned per work out per day which equals one pound per week weight loss.
(3500 calories burned equals 1 pound loss)
I combine the "30 day shred" with my treadmill (500 on the treadmill and 220-250 doing the video)0 -
I burned over 1000 on Sunday - 30 minutes of elliptical, 15 minutes exercise bike and 50 minutes of swimming lengths. I have a lot to lose so I burn more.0

Calories expended is based on two factors--aerobic intensity and body weight. Aerobic intensity is expressed in terms of oxygen uptake: milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body wt per min (ml/kg/min). Another shorthand term that is often used is METS. MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent. One (1) MET is supposed to represent the body's energy at rest, or 3.5 ml/kg/min. It's often used because the numbers are easier to work with: e.g. 8 METS rather than 28 ml/kg/min.
Calories per hour = Intensity (in METS) x Body Wt (in Kilograms).
Burning 1,000 calories per hour is not easy. For example, running a 10:00 mile is about 10-11 METS. In order to burn 1,000 calories per hour at that speed, you need to weigh 98-100 kilos (215-220 lbs).
If you can run an 8:00 mile (12.5 METS), 176 lb is the minimum weight for 1,000 Kcal/hr.
There are established formulae for estimating energy expenditure for walking, incline walking, running, stationary cycling (on an ergometer) and stepping (using real steps). You can also find tables that list estimated levels for a variety of activities. These are usually based on actual measurements on a sample population, so YMMV.
The hardest thing to estimate is a group exercise class because there is so much variation. An HRM that estimates calories--as rough an estimate as it is--is probably the best choice.
Traditional strength training is more difficult, because HR cannot be used as an estimate of aerobic activity--the physiologic mechanism that raises heart rate during strength training is different than during cardio exercise. I don't think you can rely on HRM calorie expenditure readings that are measured during weight lifting.0 -
Well, a couple times a week I find myself burning over 1000 calories -- I go to an outdoor 'boot camp' fitness class, and I burn about 700 calories per session. This is according to my HRM, but also what our instructor told us we could expect to burn, so I feel like it's probably pretty accurate. The thing that really bumps it up is that I walk to and from the class -- about 35 min each way -- and that walk home tends to really burn some extra cals because my heart rate doesn't come down as much (Stays around 135-140, as opposed to the 110-120 when I walk there). So by the time I get home I've burned about 1300 calories for the 2 hrs I was out. I usually minus 200 cals or so to account for my BMR, but I figure the 1100 is fair game.
Though again, i weigh quite a bit more than you (220), and am likely not as in shape as you are, so my body's working a lot harder.0 -
I weigh 225, and I pound the snot out of an elliptical for 35 minutes straight every morning. Peaks and valleys, never let the heart rate get below 140. I typically sweat out 2 pounds doing this...

I can burn 1000 calories in about 1.5 hours pushing a double stroller with 2 kids through the neighborhoods around our house. There a lots of hills so I get a lot of interval training. Going up get the heart rate going and coming down is my rest.....I can really burn calories on the days that I have to get the 6 kid stroller out. It weighs about 140 empty and then you put in 4 or more kids the workout just intensified. I can burn about 500 cals doing most of Jillians workouts that are around 40 minutes.0
