Making progress, but my family thinks I have an eating disor

I joined this website in September of this year and slowly began to make progress. I weighed 184 lbs and now weigh 167 lbs. I log into this site daily and try to track what I can. Long story short, my family doesn't think its a good idea for me to continue to loose weight and thinks I am obsessed with it. My dad even said that I'm gonna be anorexic soon. In my senior year of high school I weighed in at 237 lbs and have always been husky hence them use to seeing me big. My goal weight is 150 lbs. I don't really watch what I eat, just how much I eat. So anyway, my family thinks I should weigh 175-180, but I am not happy at that weight. I would just like to get the opinions of others. Thanks :D

All depends on what your healthy weight is for your height. Talk to your doctor and see what they think. I am not sure how tall you are.

This! Also, are you trying to be super skinny or are you planning to tone and just be more lean? At your current weight if you start doing some strength training, you will likely look leaner and be more fit!

I totally hear you. My husband thinks I'm obessed because I'm always on my phone logging.

Next time your family says something, explain to them that this is just a tool to help make you healthier. Also, that when you're eating better,it makes you FEEL better and they should want to support you feeling better. Good luck!

dude, awesome weight loss. yeah, how tall are you, and what made you chose that goal weight? what kind of exercise do you do now? maybe instead of just getting skinnier, you can refocus your goals on strength training? most people won't make comments if you are lifting and getting stronger.

Why not agree to see your family doctor and have them give you and your parents your "healthy" weight. That way you all hear it from the doctor, and they will be less likely to question it. That might set their minds at ease.

Maybe you should also make your diary public so others can help you make good choices. That way you are more accountable for what you eat or lack of eating.
  • I'm exactly 6 ft and I forgot to add that my goal is to try to tone up. I do 50 crunches every night, and have done this for about 3 months now and am just noticing a small difference.
  • You can't be anorexic just because you're a certain weight at a certain height. What your dad said makes no sense. Eat smart, work out consistently and correctly, and you'll be fine. If you've been bigger in the past, a drastic change can shock/scare people and I have a feeling that's what's happening with your family. I personally think 150 is pushing it a little bit because of your height and your profile does have the beginnings of signs of disordered eating. Monitor yourself and let your family or friends be an outside source of monitoring, but don't let them take over your life. I'm sure they just want to help, but they may not be going about it in the right way. Good luck!

well....just losing weight isnt always making you healthier...if this op is 6'4, then 150 is healthy? and not watching what you eat but only how much may or may not be healthy

Make sure you're family knows that your goal isn't to be thin, but to be fit and healthy, You're doing awesome! Keep it up! :drinker:

My bf is 157 and is 6 feet exactly, he has a very thin frame, though
  • I think you should not be so focused now on weight loss but build muscle thats the key!!!

6'0 and 150 equates to a BMI of 20, so that is healthy, but thin. Seems to be fine if that's what you want.

You're in a pretty good weight range now for your age and height. 80% of all FAT LOSS is diet. Continue to LOG your cals, watch your food intake avoiding the things that cause FAT to develop, and do WEIGHT TRAINING.

  • I agree about seeing the doctor and getting his opinion on the matter. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Anyway, I really appreciate all the feedback.

150 qould be quite lean for someone 6ft, do you know your approx bf%?

and abs are a muscle group and shouldn't be worked every single night.

My husband is 6' and when I met him, he was 155, and that was REALLY skinny - too skinny. He does have broad shoulders, big hands, etc, so it might look skinnier on him than some others, but IMO 150 seems too low. He could not gain any weight until he was 35 or so and his metabolism slowed down. For him, I think 190 or so is ideal, because he has a lot more muscle now. I think probably 170 to 180 is a good range, but it depends on your build. You should probably be lifting weights - that will make you leaner and feel lighter (even if it actually makes you gain a little).

I guess as long as you're healthy. But I suspect that you'll be giving up a good amount of muscle to get to that weight goal.

I'm glad you've asked for advice/help. Talk to your fam doctor, I agree that 150 for a 6ft would be rather thin. It's about how you feel. Try not to focus too much on the number on the scale. Keep in mind too that if you want to build muscle and not nec loose weight the number on the scale may go up as muscle while taking up less space weights more then fat. I would also rec talking with a PT, a lot of times if you join a gym you get 1 free session, he or she will be able to help you with strength/weights work and get you better results. Good luck!!

My boyfriend is 5''11' and weights 130 and is in the healthy range. I think 167 around that height would look healthy. I think if families are used to a bigger you a smaller version seems odd to them. I've been told I look sick by some people and I'm by no means in a healthy weight it's just they were used to the big me.
Keep doing what you're doing you're weight loss is awesome. Do what makes you happy! I think maybe seeing a doctor to confirm you're right in what you're doing would help them get on board with you! =]

Interestingly enough, I think that's a bit skinny, but as long as you're trying to be healthy about it, that's not a bad weight goal. My husband is 6 feet tall and has a very long, lean, runner's build. He's usually around 170-180, a normal weight range for him, considering he does PT every morning and is generally speaking very active at work. He's lost weight from stress and not eating enough. At 161, he doesn't look healthy. Make sure you're getting the nutrients you need. Losing weight is great, but sometimes your body will actually function better at a different weight. If you like 150, though, and feel physically good weighing that much, go for it.

Surely only if you are eating badly to start with? I have always eaten healthily, but did no exercise before. I would say 80% if not more of my weight loss has been exercise. My diet hasn't changed radically.

To the OP. 150lbs at 6ft would look good to me, I prefer thinner men, but it is on the skinny side of healthy. It just depends what look you are going for! At that weight, you'd be totally my type, but I am guessing that's not your goal?!
  • Great idea on the DR visit us men are really bad about going to the doc. Good luck..
  • Check out what a healthy BMI is and go from there. As long as you don't fall below a healthy BMI, you're fine.

If it were me, I'd throw in their face a BMI standard that would belie any subjective notions you'd be expected to pander to. Your BMI is 20.4 - a GREAT NUMBER!

Just be respectful but a broken record: "According to the BMI chart....bah, bah, bah"

    Let them argue with science...lol
