It should probably be noted that sleep apnea isn't always related to weight. A family member who had a heart attack in his mid-70s, who took the doctors' advice seriously and spends 45 minutes a day on the treadmill, eats real food and has been slim, trim and energetic for all of the intervening 18 years, still has to use a CPAP. Apnea can be either obstructive, central or some combination of the two, and it can be entirely unrelated to weight. If the person on the other side of the bed tells you to get it checked out, even if you've just worked your weight down to what it was when you graduated high school as a three-letter athlete, get it checked out.
This.
I work in pulmonary/sleep medicine. Obstructive Sleep Apnea has huge ramifications on your health. It can worsen diabetes, high blood pressure, lead to arrhythmias, and increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. It also causes a lot of excessive daytime sleepiness which can lead to motor vehicle accidents and decreased work productivity.
If you have ANY of the symptoms mentioned (snoring, gasping, choking, morning headaches, daytime sleepiness, witness irregular breathing patterns during sleep) I urge you to see a specialist and get a sleep study to initiate treatment. It can do wonders for your health and quality of life.
To the OP, you look awesome!! Congrats on your weight loss and kicking sleep apnea's butt!0 -

Sleep Apnea is more common in overweight people. Although it can happen to anyone, being overweight is a factor. So though not a cure, I'm sure the weight loss is directly related. Good for you.

Thanks for sharing. My brother has that condition and my sister-n-law has to beat the crap out of him to. But I saw him this weekend and he has starting walking every morning before going to work and he said that it has helped him. I'm going to share your testimony with him. I'm trying to get my husband to start getting fit because he has gained a lot of weight since we got married March of last year and he has high blood pressure. So thank God MFP has helped you and you are losing the weight and thank God for your wife for caring. Be blessed.0

I thought this was a post about vodka! LOL j/k
Your photos are amazing! I think I have a hard time grasping the fact that men have weight issues like women do. Being on here has really opened my mind to see that men DO have self esteem issues.
Thanks for Posting!0 -
What an amazing story and an even more amazing before and after pictures. Thanks for the inspiration, God bless you.

My o2 levels have dropped into the 70's when I'm sleeping. Luckily, with just a tube and a concentrator I'm fine but I can't wait to get off it! My doctor told me over 85% of cases are cured by losing weight. I'm hoping I'm one of those.
So happy for you and your improved health!!!0 -
I always thought that losing weight WAS the cure for sleep apnoea!
Well done, btw. I wish I looked that good with my shirt off!0 -

I thought it was too until I talked with my doctor. More info http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sleep-apnea/DS00148/DSECTION=risk-factors0 -
What an awesome story !!!
I know the feeling of improving your CPAP needs - I've gone from 126kg to 92kg in the last year and my air pressure is almost no existent and I can have little "naps" without any CPAP.
Your story is so inspirational - Well done !!!!0 -
Congratulations on your transformation and your healing from sleep apnea. You look great.

wow may I say you look absolutely amazing, not the same person at all! I wish all men would realize the correlation between weight and snoring. Alas, i sit here in the middle of the night not sleeping, again, as his snoring woke me up. again, He carries all of his extra weight in his gut and doesnt realize that this is why he snores, has constant back pain, low energy, and the list goes on and on. I have repeatedly asked him to get cked to no avail. Your wife is a lucky woman for you to have realized this and done something about it!0

Wow! Congratulations on curing your sleep apnea! Can't even imagine how scary that would be.
You look incredible! An inspiration to all the New Years Eve joiners to MFP!
Your wife must be very happy!
Keep up the good work!0 -
Dang, that's a nice present you gave your wife for Christmas!0

I snored for years and years. Then I lost weight and I now do not snore at all. It was totally down to my weight, yet my partner sometimes snores and he is very thin. My granddad used to snore very very badly and he was massively overweight and had health problems to go with that weight until he died, way to young.
I also used to work with a lady who had sleep apnea. She had just been diagnosed with it. I really wanted to say, well you should lose weight and quit your heavy smoking habit but she would not have listened anyway.
Your body is bangin' by the way. Totally buff!0 -
Congrats, you are buff!0

You are looking gooooooooooood!
So many problems are caused by obesity, you're an inspiration to all those with this condition. Well done :flowerforyou:0 -

I'm right there with you. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 7 years ago and was put on a CPAP machine. The CPAP helped a lot and probably saved my life but it is a pain to deal with. Since losing 80 lbs last year, I no longer have sleep apnea and no longer need the CPAP machine at night. It was just one of the wonderful gifts that health and fitness have brought to my life.
You're looking great. Keep up the good work.
Advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.0 -

By the way, as others have noted, your transformation is visible, dramatic and encouraging! And I'll bet sleeping soundly through the night, once that started happening, was a significant factor in taking that transformation as far as it's gone.0 -
You look amazing!0

Looking jacked man, totally different person, Congrats on Beating Sleep Apnea.0

Wow! great job!!!! I have sleep apnea, and I sleep alone and before I started losing weight. I was having episodes of gasping for air and my both legs going cold. it was horrible. I have a long way to go but I have noticed a good change. I sleep much better and wake up energized. and rested.

i agree, my dad had sleep apnea for years, he was around 360 at 5 '10", he ended up having the gastric bypass and lost half of himself, he no longer has the condition and has been "cured" of his diabetes, not sure if you can officially be cured for that, but my husband has told me i snore at night too and i sleep horribly, hoping dropping weight helps with my situation, btw, you look really good0
