Net calories?

When I calculate how much I've eaten, should I look at net calories, or just my total intake? For instance, my net right now is 538 calories, but my total intake is around 1000. I try to eat 1200-1400 net calories every day, but would it be better for me to not pay attention to net and just focus on my intake?
Sorry if this is a stupid question or if it has been asked a lot before...

It has been asked a lot - but that's OK.
The short answer is - pay attention to your net calories. Try to get the "calories remaining" number as close to 0 as possible.
