Dining Room Table...

I don't understand it personally.0

My breakfast nook has one, everyone in the house hates it.0

I don't really either... But my girlfriend is pushing that concept. I love her house and value her opinion, but I don't really get it...0 -
A bench on one side is ok, but do not go for a bench on both sides. It's a pain in the *kitten*, especially for guests that have to slide down to let one another in and out.
I have a bench on one side, because my dining room is narrow, and you have to walk through it to get from the kitchen to the living room. It is nice to be able to slide the bench under the table to make a little extra room when not in use.0 -
asymmetry is an essential design principle...perhaps thats why your gf is so sold on the idea0

we have a table kinda like that but we opt to get 2 benches and 2 chairs as the captin chairs, we also have 4 kids and me and the husband so we found its easier to put more people at the table with 2 benches and 2 chairs compared to 6 chairs...0

I wanted to get a bench for one side of our dining table, because as a previous poster stated, our dining room is pretty narrow. Then I thought about my 3 youngest sitting there all on one bench giggling and annoying each other allllll through dinner...and figured the chairs are worth it, even if we do have to squeeze by them when someone is sitting at the table. lol0

Josh - If I had it my way, you'd be building me this table right now... Just sayin

I prefer chairs.0

Yeah, I don't really get it. I don't like them because I'm inevitably the person sitting in the middle on one of those and the one that has to get up the most often for one reason or another.0

If I'm eating, I want something supporting my back.0
-
are you going to push it up against the wall most of the time?
This is the only reason I can thing of.
I like back support when I chow down.0 -
We have a table similar to that with a bench. It works out well for the smaller children and can seat a few extra people when they have friends over.0

This is gorgeous.0 -
Definitely prefer support while i eat. Then again I might stop shoving food down my face if I actually had to hold my upper body up. :laugh:0

I love this look! Go with chairs.0 -
We have a bench on one side, and my kid prefers it. Also, we can fit three small butts on it when needed.0

LOVE IT!0

We're going to build a bench on one side or our dining table. It will be a storage-style bench, which is great, and it just looks fab.0

Since I only have one child but entertain adults a lot, I think I'm opting for chairs... I have a second dining room table in a sun-room area that seats 4-6 that mini me and I use on a daily basis. This will be a more "formal" area...0

I really like them. My parents have one like that and I love it.0

We have one with a bench on one side and we have found it handy for times when we need a little extra seating... the bench will fit two adults and one child making it possible to put 3 people on one side instead of just two. It can be cumbersome at times though too. It is difficult to get in and out of so if you are hosting a dinner or have children that are always asking for more milk you won't want to sit there yourself.0

My mom has a bench....and a pretty large kitchen...
At 27...I STILL fight over not sitting on that side...:grumble:0 -
The bench is also handy to drag into the family room for use as an impromptu snack/beverage table in front of couch/love seat.0
-
Oh fabulous. Now It looks like if I don't vote for the bench, I'll be spending my Spring building a dining room table?0
-
our dining room table has benches all the way around and I love it! they are padded at least lol but generally only 2 people sit on each of the longer benches and 1 on the smaller ones.0
-
We HAD a bench. It's now in the attic and we replaced it with chairs.
Pros: You can squeeze more people.
Cons: Very inconvenient for the people in the middle to get in and out ... have to slide.
NOT comfortable for most adults for an extended period of time.0 -

I can see a bench in an informal dining room, I too have a narrow informal dining area. But for formal, I would go with all chairs.0 -
