Those of you with a KINDLE...

I love books and have a sizable library and I read a lot (20,000+ pages a year), but do use a kindle for certain things and love it. For pleasure reading or things I need to read to be aware of them but don't need/want to add to my library it is great. The e-ink is a little easier on the eyes than ink and paper, and you can't beat the size/weight. Its also great to travel with (I keep a small reference library on it). One caveat, I read fast ant have a habit of reading the last few lines on a page while I turn it, and you can't do that with a kindle, and it slows me down a little.0

Love my Kindle! Was like you... liked having the book in my hand ect... now I couldn't think of anything better! Nice cuz there are no bookstores around me... when I run out of book to read in the middle of the night...Voila a new book in 60 seconds. You can even get used on E-bay real cheap!
That is how I am . I downloaded a 99 cent book last night before I got in the bathtub. Can't beat that.0 -
I resisted getting a kindle but I got one for my birthday and I LOVE IT!!
For anyone else who has kindle/nook/ereaders in general, if you like "pixel of ink" on facebook or go to their website www.pixelofink.com it will tell you about books that are free or deeply discounted each day. I have found tons of books that way. LOVE IT!0 -
to the OP: i love paper books too, turning pages, and collecting them on my shelf as "trophies." both the ones i've read and the ones i just like to buy and haven't read
however, i bought the $79 wifi kindle and I. LOVE. IT. so freaking much. you know how heavy the steig larsson trilogy is in paper, i'm sure. well, on my kindle, it weighs nothing! so i say give love to both e-readers and traditional books0 -
No monthly fee. Buy the kindle, then buy the books. You need wifi wherever you are.0

I am a book lover and when I got one christmas year before last I was a bit ooooh!!! Thanks!!!! I love to read and I love the feel of a book in my hands. I am totally and utterly coverted its the best present I have ever had. I love that it recommends titles to me based on my tastes and I can search for anything I want to read and read reveiws on it. You can download it in seconds. Mine works off my wifi at home so I just make sure its loaded up before I go anywhere with it.
I heart my kindle very very much xxx0 -
Oh and I have read dozens of free books which I wouldnt have come across because of it and there has been some real page turners (button pressed) on there. You get new authors showcasing maybe a new triology series they are releasing and the first e book is free. Its amazing x0

I love books too, but they did a great job with the basic Kindle. I was shocked that once I started using it I don't miss the physical book at all. The screen contrast is fantastic (on the classic reader, not the fire) and you never lose your page! BTW, Pillars of the Earth - Fantastic book.0

Kindle is awesome - and you can download books off torrent sites for free as long as they're in MOBI format (no one has said this yet but it's true) and you can also get lots of classics for free. Love the kindle I read so much more now and my shoulder loves it cos it's so light in my handbag.0

Cheapest in the US then in EU, not sure how much but I think the cheapest are under $100.
The Kindle was one of my best buys for sure. I like you liked my old fashioned books but the Kindle feels so much like a book that is great and currently I have over 100 books on my kindle and it still is the same size, nothing can beat that.
The charge on it also seems to last forever, I go weeks without charging mine sometimes, which is great, not like a smartphone or something that you need to be constantly charging.
If you like reading I'd say go for it, you won't regret it.0 -
I have a Kindle Touch, and love it! If you have a smart phone, you can download the Kindle App for free, to check it out. Great book, BTW!0

I love my kindle. If it goes wrong you contact customer support, they call you and arrange for it to be repaired at no cost to you. Customer support are really helpful too (my brother's got damaged after years of use and they replaced it with a reconditioned one). I have a nice hemp and leather cover for mine which makes it a little like holding a book (nice feel to it) and protects it too.
I read so many books that it was either a Kindle or a TARDIS, and I believe there's only one of those left in the universe and I don't think The Doctor is ready to part with it!0 -
I also love to keep them afterwards as mini-trophies (yes I'm crazy like that) on my book shelves and I also think they look pretty as well.
I don't have a Kindle, I was just noseying. But I'm SO glad I'm not the only one who does this. I thought I was weird. :')0 -
i too love books, reading them, holding them, and keeping the ones i've read on a shelf. but i love my kindle.
the Kindle can fit thousands of books, the battery life is great. I use it at the gym because i don't have to struggle to keep it open when i'm on the machine. it has a built-in dictionary, so if there is a word you do not know the definition of, you just bring the cursor to it and it provides a definition.
no monthly plan needed, and if you buy a book on Amazon, if you have the wi-fi version, your kindle is updated automatically over the wi-fi. it is awesome.0 -
I'd suggest going and giving them a look first.
My eyes strain rather quickly when looking on a computer screen. I have a Nook Colour at home and it hurts my eyes when i use it to read... So the Nook Tablet or Amazon Fire or Ipad would give similiar effects on the eyes.
If you're like that... go for the original Kindles that has the E-Ink in it rather than the other screen. They're cheaper too
The E-ink is VERY close if not looks just like a book. No glare, no eye strain.
If you dont have those probs, then go with anyone of them you like. Just thought i'd point that out to you.0 -
I bought the cheapest Kindle ($79) and I absolutely LOVE it. I had stopped reading during my commute because I didn't want to carry heavy books. Even in bed, those big books can be a real pain. Now that I've got the Kindle I find myself reading much more often. Stephen King's latest jumbo offering weighs just a few ounces now...0

I also have gotten a kindle fire for Christmas and am actually writing this on it right now . I used to think ereaders are not for me but I found out I love the freedom to have 200 books with me at any time when I got my first ereader last Christmas at the time a Pandora novel.there are also many free books and libraries who make it possible to rent electronically. I don't have a smartphone because I rather have all those options on my kindle fire.0

i'm a book-lover too, and i LOVE my kindle. i never liked to carry around books, because i get upset if they get bent or smushed or otherwise damaged, which they WILL if they're in my purse. kindles are lightweight, and you can get covers for them so that they don't get damaged, and they begin to take up a predictable amount of space in your bag, unlike a book, which may change sizes often as you move on to new ones.
i have the regular kindle, the $79 one. i chose it because i felt it was the most book-like. with the next one up, the kindle touch, you flick your finger across the screen to turn the pages. i found that annoying, and also i felt that to push the buttons on the side of the regular kindle's screen was more of a tactile experience, more like turning real pages. with the kindle fire, it's more like a basic tablet. it's back-lit, it has a shiny screen, and you can go on the internet and stuff more easily. (you can go online from the other two, too, and all 3 work on a wifi connection rather than a pay service like a cellphone would, but it's harder on the two more basic models, especially the $79 one, because of the way you input text, and there are no colors on the display). i felt that a shiny, back-lit screen was the least book-like thing possible.0 -

Another Kindle user here! I have the wifi version as well and read constantly at the gym while on the elliptical (can't read on the treadmill as jogging and reading don't mix with the way the machines are set up..I can read when I'm doing a walk with an incline though).
I've started checking out books from the library and/or getting mostly the free books at Amazon. Unless it is a book I really really want, I will wait until the book hits the library rather than pay for it (saves the pocketbook big time).
My Mom has the Nook and really likes it as well. Either way you can't go wrong but I say go for the Kindle as I think there are more free options and less expensive book options in that format currently.0 -
if you're reading in bed, laying on your back, with the kindle* held above your face, and you drop it, it doesn't hurt as badly as your average hardcover!
*test was conducted with the lower-end model0 -
I like reading on my iPad. There's a free Kindle app, so you can still download books from the Kindle bookstore. It's been very useful to organize my books, PDF files and textbooks.0

LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle! I have the one with the keyboard - it was $99. I can read library books on it, which costs me absolutely nothing! No fee to keep it going, unless you count the cost of purchasing books if you don't use the library. Love using it while I do cardio too - much lighter and easier to use/hold. Check it out at amazon.com0

I got a kindle fire for Christmas and I love it. I still plan on buying my favorite books in hardcover for my shelf, but I like being able to check books out on kindle from our library, and you can loan between kindle users. I also use MFP from my kindle.0

You don't have to give up on books if you have a Kindle. I still read books from the library and I have 2nd generation Kindle and a Kindle Fire. I also listen to audiobooks. I like the older Kindle ( as opposed to the Fire) because it is lighter and thinner and I don't have to worry about accidentally touching the screen and making something happen.0
-
I got mine right before Christmas for $99. It is the one that has the ads and special offers on it. The ads don't affect my reading and I love it! I like holding to "real thing" too so I have a variety. I love that when I read a book on my Kindle, once I am finished, I can get a new book right away. It is great for books in a series!0

Posting from my kindle fire right now! Love it! Its lighter and.more portable than, say, an ipad or a 3 pound book. It can fit in my purse or my school bag, and the battery life is great. This was a gift, but it was $200, which is a little pricey, but if I had bought it for myself, I wouldn't regret the purchase. Amazon has a library of sorts, where you can rent a book, free of charge, for a month. You can only rent one a month. You can also get a good sized sample of a book if you aren't sure you will like it. All in all, a great purchase!0

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but you can connect the kindle to a smartphone (I have an HTC Inspire) and read the same books on your Kindle on your phone. Kind of an extra added bonus when you can't have your Kindle out...like at work.
I am also a book collector. I have a ton of books (about 3 bookshelves worth) but feel that the Kindle is the best thing for me to avoid buying anymore bookshelves. Stores a ton of books, they download in seconds, and the books are easy to read on the Kindle...love it!0 -
I am old fashioned and love to have and hold books in my hand. I actually love to turn a page as I read (so exciting). I also love to keep them afterwards as mini-trophies (yes I'm crazy like that) on my book shelves and I also think they look pretty as well.
For xmas I was gifted "The Pillars of the Earth" (yay!!!) (900+ pages - boo!) and the darn thing is HEAVY!!! I ride the train to and from work so I've been dragging that thing around for the past 2 days and I so envy the other people on the train that have those book-reading devices.
So I ask you Kindle lovers...how do they work? Are they expensive? Do you pay like a monthly fee to be able to keep the thing working? If so do you purchase an "internet" package like you do with the smart phones?
Let me know....
Thanks!
I'm like you, I love holding a book. I've thrown around the idea though of getting a Kindle...I just have a nagging thought in the back of my mind that says "What is the internet shuts down one day or we have some major electric crisis and now your entire life (calendar, books, music, movies, etc) are all stored on your electronic, internet-attached devices?? Or iTunes goes under? HMMM???"
Yea, I'm weird, but I keep getting scared about buying one and then never having the physical copy of the book.0
