depends on what your purposes are.
most people get more than enough protein in their diet a day. according to the cdc and us gov HHS, adults should be getting around 60 grams of protein a day. or 10-35% of total daily calories should come from protein.
i am a vegetarian who is trying to build muscle, so I take a whey isolate mix directly after each workout. I lift only, and do no cardio. I get around 80 grams a day on average on workout days.
so unless you feel you dont get the 60 or so grams a day, there is no need for you to intake a protein supplement. Studies have shown that older women can benefit from a little increase in protein to help maintain muscle mass. The same goes for very active people, especially those trying to lose body fat. But this doesnt mean you need massive amounts.
ps..there are different types of protein mixes out there..do your research. Casein protein is more 'slow release', meaning it takes longer to process and gives a steady influx of aminos. Whey isolate is opposite of this, and is best ingested right after a workout for fast recovery and promote protein synthesis in the muscles. Then of course there is soy protein, pea protein, milk derivatives etc etc.0 -
@xraychick77 Is bang on. Unless you are on muscle gain phase where you are trying to eat well over your MBR (3500 and up) or you are dietary restricts that prevent you from eating meat, you really do not need to protein powder.
That said, it won't do any harm either. If you are drinking it immediately after for recovery whey isolate is key for recovery but casein burns longer and also can be easier on the stomach. I prefer a good mix and my current favorite is Biotest Metabolic Drive Low Carb in the vanilla flavor. You can't buy it in the store, it's web only but it tastes decent and doesn't give me stomach cramps.
As for flavors I can't stand chocolate for any brand because I love chocolate and fake chocolate just tastes fake and hence bad. I found vanilla or banana flavors to be the most successful can be combine with more foods.0 -
Extra protein will help you recover from your more intense workouts so I recommend it for sure. Whey is the best. Although if you are vegetarian keep in mind that it is a milk protein. Anyway I use the GNC Vanilla with just water and it is really good and smooth. However, the muscle tech chocolate is excellent in your morning coffee. Just let your coffee cool for a minute before you put it in.0
