Yes... eat more often in smaller portions. And eat the RIGHT things. Your metabolism is like a fire burning in the fireplace... you have to keep adding to it to keep it burning steady.... not too much, not too little :)
Sorry -- but his is a myth. Your metabolism does not stop. It continues working as you sleep, as your body does not stop functioning and requiring energy. The frequency and timing of eating has no bearing on one's metabolism. Myths!

Your metabolism slows while you sleep, and it doesn't rev back up until you eat again.
    Myth!

I read an OP remarks saying heavy weights only matter....so not true, your food consumption/timing plays a significant role.
    Myth!

Building, or at least KEEPING, your lean muscle helps a lot. Also, just plain being a more active person. Not sure if it actually increases your metabolism, but it sure as hell increases your TDEE.

When I'm an active person, I can lose weight eating the same amount of food I ate when I was gaining weight as a lazy lump.

    Thanks everyone! Great tips :)
Please, do your homework. I've posted some links with info from reputable sources. A lot of myths have been posted here. Here's a great resource here on MFP to bookmark, with lots of good info: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/457-unofficial-mfp-faq

Lifting heavy weights & doing HIIT has a small "after burn" affect which you could say is increasing metabolism.

Just stick to the basics, hit your cal/macro goals & do a combination of resistance & cardio exercises. Do this consistently & you will be on your way to your goals :)

Ive seen lot of things about speeding up your metabolism on Dr. Oz. Some of the suggestions were to use spices like cinnamon and cayenne pepper when cooking. There's even one guest on the show who would eat a tablespoon of pure cinnamon every morning. Dr Oz also suggested taking vitamin supplments like vitamin B12, drinking green tea and coffee and to use ginger when cooking. Here's the link:

    Ahem!

Please do not fall for some common myths being propagated here...

No specific food (lemon, cinnamon, green tea, etc) will affect your metabolism.

Spacing your meals out has no bearing on your metabolism.

    This is great, thanks!

muscles. muscle inherently burns more calories in a state of rest (or any other state for that matter) than fat . . . so think of metabolism as directly linked to muscle and work on it.

FYI, the frequency of food, number of meals a day, blah blah blah does nothing for metabolism. Foods (spices yadda yadda) are metabolism boosters, but you have to really eat it like crazy in such ridiculously copious amounts to make a difference.

So . . . I come back to muscle. Find something heavy and pick things up and put them down.
    Lol!!!

I'm sorry but frequency of meals, "boosting metabolism" by eating breakfast and what not is old school bro science more recently debunked (EEG has posted some really great and accurate links).

I'm a big, giant fan of high impact cardio . . . hell I'm a step aerobics instructor, but hit doesn't do anything for metabolism. hic burns awesome calories while in the midst of hic and for a couple of hours after. Strength training doesn't necessarily burn as much while you're doing it, but it has long term effects.

I was going to simply say "eat and exercise" but I really like some of these other answers better.

And don't dicount the poster who recommended The New Rules of Lifting for Women - go buy this book. Like right now. Seriously stop reading and go to BnN or BAM and get your copy.

    Or go here:

30 minutes or more a day (or thereabouts) of cardiovascular exercise (bike riding, running, etc - anything to get your heart rate elevated above your normal resting rate) will increase your metabolism, and keep it elevated for several hours after you finish exercising.

I started taking One-a-Day Active Metabolism vitamins. I don't know if they work, but they do seem to give me a little extra energy...

    http://www.randi.org/site/jref-news/1260-pigasus-2011

The Media Pigasus Award goes to Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has done such a disservice to his TV viewers by promoting quack medical practices that he is now the first person to win a Pigasus two years in a row. Dr. Oz is a Harvard-educated cardiac physician who, through his syndicated TV show, has promoted faith healing, "energy medicine," and other quack theories that have no scientific basis. Oz has appeared on ABC News to give legitimacy to the claims of Brazilian faith healer “John of God,” who uses old carnival tricks to take money from the seriously ill. He's hosted Ayurvedic guru Yogi Cameron on his show to promote nonsense "tongue examination" as a way of diagnosing health problems. This year, he really went off the deep end. In March 2011, Dr. Oz endorsed "psychic" huckster and past Pigasus winner John Edward, who pretends to talk to dead people. Oz even suggested that bereaved families should visit psychic mediums to receive (faked) messages from their dead relatives as a form of grief counseling.

The best way to boost metabolism is to increase lean muscle mass. Best way to do that is to lift heavy weights.

THIS AND eat more to get this LBM.
