How to speed up your metabilism?

I'm sorry but frequency of meals, "boosting metabolism" by eating breakfast and what not is old school bro science more recently debunked (EEG has posted some really great and accurate links).
I'm a big, giant fan of high impact cardio . . . hell I'm a step aerobics instructor, but hit doesn't do anything for metabolism. hic burns awesome calories while in the midst of hic and for a couple of hours after. Strength training doesn't necessarily burn as much while you're doing it, but it has long term effects.0 -
I was going to simply say "eat and exercise" but I really like some of these other answers better.
And don't dicount the poster who recommended The New Rules of Lifting for Women - go buy this book. Like right now. Seriously stop reading and go to BnN or BAM and get your copy.
Or go here:

30 minutes or more a day (or thereabouts) of cardiovascular exercise (bike riding, running, etc - anything to get your heart rate elevated above your normal resting rate) will increase your metabolism, and keep it elevated for several hours after you finish exercising.0

Ive seen lot of things about speeding up your metabolism on Dr. Oz. Some of the suggestions were to use spices like cinnamon and cayenne pepper when cooking. There's even one guest on the show who would eat a tablespoon of pure cinnamon every morning. Dr Oz also suggested taking vitamin supplments like vitamin B12, drinking green tea and coffee and to use ginger when cooking. Here's the link:

Be skeptical of anything that Dr. Oz says.0 -
im constantly told to eat breakfast within 30 mins of getting out of bed or my metabolism will be halved idk if its true or not lol
I like this one! lol. Thats the best piece of bro-science i've heard in a while!!!!0 -
I started taking One-a-Day Active Metabolism vitamins. I don't know if they work, but they do seem to give me a little extra energy...0

The Media Pigasus Award goes to Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has done such a disservice to his TV viewers by promoting quack medical practices that he is now the first person to win a Pigasus two years in a row. Dr. Oz is a Harvard-educated cardiac physician who, through his syndicated TV show, has promoted faith healing, "energy medicine," and other quack theories that have no scientific basis. Oz has appeared on ABC News to give legitimacy to the claims of Brazilian faith healer “John of God,” who uses old carnival tricks to take money from the seriously ill. He's hosted Ayurvedic guru Yogi Cameron on his show to promote nonsense "tongue examination" as a way of diagnosing health problems. This year, he really went off the deep end. In March 2011, Dr. Oz endorsed "psychic" huckster and past Pigasus winner John Edward, who pretends to talk to dead people. Oz even suggested that bereaved families should visit psychic mediums to receive (faked) messages from their dead relatives as a form of grief counseling.

The best way to boost metabolism is to increase lean muscle mass. Best way to do that is to lift heavy weights.
THIS AND eat more to get this LBM.0 -

Okay I guess it revs me up and I excercise harder. I am also a leangains fan so i have heard all this stuff you are linking us...0 -
I've heard cinnamon!
I heard that too. Last time I lost weight before I got pregnant I ate 1/2 cup sugar free apple sauce and put cinnamon in it and something was working. So I still add cinnamon to everything I can.0 -
I have heard that vitamin B12 can help with metabolism, as well as give you more energy throughout the day. Vitamin D and B6 in combination have been shown to speed up metabolism.
I did all three and have seen success, but it could just be coincidence. It doesn't hurt to try!0 -
I eat cinnamon because it tastes awesome not because of some mythical metabolism boosting properties0

Everyone has certain things that just work for them, myth or not keep an open mind and try different things.
There are a lot of great tips here:)
P.S
I don't watch Dr. Oz but he is not a quack for recommending energy work or ayurvedic treatments...I used those therapies plus a naturopath to cure a rare, crippling form of arthritis when conventional therapies/drugs were too damaging to my kidneys. It's great to see a Dr that's open minded to natural therapies that have been around for ages.Ive seen lot of things about speeding up your metabolism on Dr. Oz. More meals a day thing is a myth. I've been eating 2 meals a day and fasting for 16 hrs every day for a year now. I'm a natural bodybuilder and I am the biggest and leanest I have ever been (98kg with abs). So many years I wasted my life eating 6-8 meals.
That said. You can still get results eating 6-8 meals, obviously. But you are getting results in spite of doing this, not because of it.
I'm guessing you want to speed up your metabolism so you can eat more and be more satisfied? In my experience eating more regularly just made me more hungry and bigger meals were more satiating.0 -
Eat clean, drink loads of water and exercise regularly (including resistance and weight training). Once you start to build lean muscle your metabolism will work more efficiently and thus burn calories quicker
You just made an oxymoron there that is actually partially true.
"metabolism will work more efficiently and thus burn calories quicker"
If it is more efficient, it will not burn calories more quickly, it will burn them slower, because it is more efficient.
And that is exactly the effect that can happen when you do mostly/all cardio workouts, and don't increase your intensity.
Your muscles and heart get better at doing pace x, they get more efficient, and pace x no longer is the strain on the body it once was. Now you do not burn as many calories doing pace x. And you wonder why you slowly start to gain weight when you are doing the exact same workout you've always done.
Same could happen with weight lifting, never increasing intensity.0 -
Exercise every day.
No secret.0 -
I'm glad I'm not that only one that thinks Dr. Oz is a quack. Ok, he may be a real doctor but he's also a TV personality that delivers sound bites for ratings and regurgitates some common findings in publications without the depth, analysis or application needed to make them actually true or effective. I'm sure he's a fine surgeon but he should stick to that. I caught several episodes of "The Doctors" on TV....what a horrific show!
I think it's all about balance, good eating, exercise and keeping active. Active, meaning spending at least 60% of your day NOT sitting (which most of us do), but being on your feet and/or moving as much as possible.0 -
I Just read in fit magz last night that it is all about weight training ... It is also age and the make up of your body .. The only way to speed it up is to get stronger so your body works harder all day long ...0
-
Good eating, exercise and you know every man says cuddling the one you love keeps metabilism active!!!!

Exercise. That is the best way to speed it up. Caffeinated beverages will speed it up for short while.0

So . . . I come back to muscle. Find something heavy and pick things up and put them down.
OT: I have that fitness world commercial in my head now. " I pick things up and put them down" LOL0
