Hello everyone,

I'm new to myfitnesspal, and I would love to have more supportive friends to help keep me accountable!

I have both high blood pressure and an enlarged heart and it's very important that I get my weight under control and exercise very regularly to keep my heart as healthy as it can be. I am also really looking forward to starting a family with my husband (just got married last September) and I DEFINITELY can't do that until my doctors are convinced that I"m healthy enough to carry a baby...

I'd love for you to go on this journey with me!

God bless!

Hey! I joined here when I learned that my BP is too high. I am having success in large part due to the community support. Just found out my wife is pregnant with twins! Now my mission is to get to a point where I weigh less than she does, at least for the last month of her pregnancy! Feel free to add me.

    Welcome, Evelyn!

Start tracking your sodium and make sure that level is under control. They slip that nasty stuff into the craziest things! Especially Fat Free versions of stuff. It is easier to lower your sodium intake if you cut out prepackaged meals and make fresh stuff at home. Eating out can do a number on the sodium too!

    High Blood Pressure.....
I had it - BAD! I was 262lbs and in bad shape.

Please, this is not medical advice.
I started walking - 2 miles every day for 8 months, and watching diet, dropping 30 lbs.

At the end of 8 months, my BP went from high to high/normal.
I started walking 3 miles, then 4 with some jogging, and continued dieting, and when I hit 210lbs, I was normal.

Today, my BP is 115/75 - optimal.

    Good luck to you!

    Hey!
Definitely sodium is important to track, as well as your water intake - but I'm sure your doctor told you everything about it.

Maybe you can use this as a motivation, that losing 5 kg (10lbs) can lower your BP by 10! Try to think in small steps, this makes it waaaaaaaaay easier. Try to set up mini goals and reward yourself (no food rewards!)

You'll do it. feel free to friend me, if you want!
  • Hi,

Welcome to MFP. This is exactly what you need. well done for taking the first step to health.

The good news is that this works. It really does. Four years ago I was in such a bad state health wise. I was put on BP tablets and warned that I would be on them for life. well, since then, I have turned my life around and now I don't need to take them anymore. My GP said that she has never been able to take someone off them before.

So, it can be done if you keep on keeping on

I had great results reducing my BP with exercise and nutrition. A few years ago I was seeing 160/90+... now it's in the range of 115/70's. I lost a lot of weight, became much more active, and learned to eat for nutrition rather than convenience.

Limiting sodium is a good step but also look at the importance of how much potassium you need relative to the sodium you consume. They work together in your body. Do some research on the benefits of increasing potassium relative to sodium and making sure you're getting the right amount of magnesium in your diet. All 3 have been proven to distinct effects on blood pressure over time. I aim for 2/1 potassium/sodium ratio, and based on blood test results my doctor has me adding 800mg of magnesium per day. Your mileage may vary depending on your overall diet, activity level, and individual needs.
