HELP! I'm worried about my mum.

My mother is getting gastric sleeving done (where they cut off a portion of your stomach). She has a BMI of around 35/36, and has decided to have this surgical procedure. But I'm really worried about her, I know there are risks involved, but the worst part is she hasn't even tried to lose weigh by monitoring her calorie intake. I myself have lost 18kgs and my sister has lost 15, and we know how easy it can be! However she doesn't even want to try what we are doing.

I have even tried to get her to try out MFP with me, but she just gets angry when I suggest it, and says she has no self control to diet/is too busy working etc. I'm not being selfish, I understand she works hard, and I try to help out more around the house, but I wish she would at least give this a go first before rushing into expensive surgical procedures. I'm worried about her, and not sure what to do.

She weighs less than I did when I joined MFP, and I know that if she could stick with it she would lose weight for sure..but I don't know what to do...

oh man i wish I could say something to help but i wouldn't know what to do in your shoes either! i would maybe look up some evidence of how that surgery hasn't helped people in the past and maybe share those examples with your mom or encourage her to look up those examples herself. that surgery can potentially be harmful, and permanent weight loss really has to be a lifestyle change, as I'm sure you know. i hope this works out!

Thats exactly what I think, Its all well and good getting surgery, but if you don't have the knowledge to change your life then you will end up exactly where you started as a result of bad habits..

I think she just wants it because it's a) permanent, b) a 'quick fix' in her mind

you should try to talk to her and her doctor. he might advise her against it.
