I'm just curious if anyone is suffering from a panic/anxiety disorder and is able to effectively control it without the use of prescription medications. Diet and exercise help me tremendously, but I can't always get around to exercising when I need to this time of year. I was drinking herbal tea with Valerian for some time to calm and soothe my jumpy self. After about a month, it started to have the opposite affect. Anyway, just curious

I have no idea if this works.. but it's natural and safe. Worth looking into and it's a vitamin. Niacin.

For me meditation CD's helped. Look up Mindfulness. That for me is the key to basically how I view all my problems and issues in life.

I have a family member who read about this and has been taking it for about a month now. He swears by it. It is inexpensive and if it doesn't help, it also shouldn't hurt.
  • I use different types of meditations, there are also yoga routines designed to alleviate anxiety. Valerian Root is good, you have to be careful with it though, also St. John's Wort. My new favorite is an organic tea called Yogi - Kava Stress Relief it works wonders. I have been battling anxiety for years and years and have decided to go med free as well. I have been for 3 years now and have been doing pretty good. I know its easier said than done but for me its a matter of mind control. Mind over matter. Breathing techniques. It all depend on what you are interested in trying and how much in control of your thoughts you are. And here is a link to a beginners meditation if you would like to try http://www.inspir3.com/meditation/stillness-meditation-styles-for-beginners/

I hope you find a little peace. There is a lot of help out there. But mostly its within YOU. Feel free to add me I am big on positive energy and would love to help in any way I can :)

Thanks everybody! Niacin? I haven't heard of using that for anxiety. I'll definitely look into it. Itried the Valerian and it helped for awhile...then it started to have the opposite effect.
I enjoy yoga and I do try to meditate. I will look into all of your suggestions! Thank you again!

did you ever learn how to do meditation? get some soothing music like Bach and sit or lay down with your eyes closed and lose yourself in the music. its very soothing and relaxing. also try to take up yoga. i cant do yoga because im way too antsy for it but i know a lot of people it has performed miracles on.

if you can get an aquarium, get one.. i used to have one years ago and would sit and stare at it forever while listening to soothing music.. it honestly does help

Cognitive therapy - highly highly highly recommended in. Super short version: analyze the panic-inducing thought and measure - how likely is this thing to actually happen... what could be the consequences - and what are the odds of those. It's easy to immediately go worst-case scenario when the panic attack starts ... these tricks help reframe it more realistically.

    That and deep breathing/relaxation exercises.
