Anyone else a SYMPATHY eater?!

I'm not an emotional eater... actually the last thing I want to do when I'm upset/stressed is eat! But... I've discovered I'm a SYMPATHY eater!

Example: I had a great day today food and exercise-wise. Then around 7pm, my dad made some toasted ciabatta bread with cheese, made me a plate and gave it to me.... I couldn't say no! He's been out of a job and severely depressed and he did it for me, so I felt like I HAD to eat it!

I'll always put my dad first and I'd do anything to make him happy, even sabotage my diet! But I do this for EVERYONE... friends family classmates...

Anyone else have this problem?!

I used to be the same way with my dad. And it was bad for both of us because my dad was a diabetic and he'd make things he shouldn't have been eating under the guise of making a treat for us all. He'd buy ice cream because he was treating us. And I would tell myself I was eating things because if I didn't then he would, and it's much worse for him. Yeah, bad cycle. It's really nice to let your daddy treat you sometimes, but maybe you should tell him another time (when he's not already making you something) that you're dieting so if he wants to make something nice for you, then to try to make it a healthy snack! Maybe challenge him to eat healthier with you?

    I am!

My husband made me my dinner plate, I know if I didn't eat what he had "worked so hard" to make he would be upset.

I am trying my best to make him understand my goals.

I went on a binge tonight that brought back memories of how I used to be daily.
I just went on a rampage!

2000 calories - just like that.
It can happen that fast, and I really thought I was way past this.
  • Glad I'm not alone! It's so frustrating... & I'd love to get him to eat healthier! Maybe I'll start making healthy treats for him :)

Yep. I used to be that way with my mom. I would go to her house and there was always something she'd made that she wanted to share. She's gone now and I don't regret a single bite I had with her.

That being said, when I go to St. Louis to visit my son and DIL, he makes a special effort to cook things he knows I like. I wouldn't dream of saying no.

I know I get frustrated with it sometimes... but at the end of the day I'll feel all right about it, like you said. My dad will always come before my caloric goals :)

Mine was getting compared to my husbands ex who never ate anything, she would pick and pick but never actually eat it. I never wanted to hurt my MIL's feelings by not eating what she made even if I didn't like it.
