Cant say which is better because as always you get out of what you put in.

Effective for what? Both burn calories at a rate dependent on the level you work at, but spinning makes you better at spinning, running makes you better at running. If you have the option, do both, as one is high-impact and one is low-impact and they alternate nicely while minimising the risk of injury.

The bottom line is the best exercise is the one you do, and that comes down to what you enjoy, are motivated by and feel you can progress in. That may be the one exercise you fall in love with or a variety throughout the week.

In my opinion it comes down to which one you enjoy more, which one you'll get out of bed for, which one you'll be able to keep up month after month and in my case, which one kills my knees less! (weirdly enough running is less painful than cycling for me!)

Both burn a lot of calories, so they're both effective in that sense. It really comes down to which one you prefer.

Although if you have no preference, I'd say running is more practical. When are you really going to use spinning in real life. And remember that Rule #1 of Zombieland is cardio!

The one you get out and do. Just do both.
Seriously, you can alternate and break the routine a bit having more than one ace in the deck.

I do 15 different forms of cardio!
  • Depends on your goals. I've been spinning 3-4x/week for over 2 yrs now so it was getting a little old and i am conditioned to it. I recently started adding a running program. Now I go to gym at 5am, run 2 miles, go to spin (and other) classes. Sometimes I go run another 2 mi afterwards. My calorie burns are through the roof again since I began mixing it up like this.

Find a friend to join you if possible. My gym buddy and I push each other to the next level. 2 yrs ago I was 20lbs heavier and couldnt run 5 minutes straight. Now 2 miles is just a warm up for spin class. Work hard (but smart) and push through!
