if you are meat eater you should be getting plenty of b vitamins. other than that..they have a very low level of toxicity, if you take too much. So you can take a supplement if you want and have no fear of any side effects..but now that doesnt mean you absorb or use all of that excess. after a certain amount your body gets rid of it through your urine. so there is no point in taking high doses.

Take this with a grain of salt because I read it a long time ago and don't have a source. And haven't bothered to research it again.

Don't take B12 in a pill form. It doesn't absorb well from the stomach. Take it either by injection from your doctor, or buy it in a lozenge or an under tongue strip.

I did have a spell where I was taking B12. It worked wonders on my energy level. Now that my diet is better. I don't need to take it anymore.

When I take it, and I notice a difference when I do, I take a sublingual version for this reason. It diffuses directly into the blood stream when it dissolves under the tongue.
  • I think I would like to know why you want to take B vitamins? or what part of B vitamins you are questioning. B vitamins do help energy levels especially B12. B6 is useful for sleep if taken with magnesium. I have taken the supplements for a while and they do help. I take the B12 early before noon or I really have a hard time sleeping!

I get plenty of B-12 from the foods I eat (its not found just in meat guys, lots of vegetables have a high count of B-12)
But I take a 1500mg B-12 pill each day as well because I have a deficiency.

I have to get the monthly injections at the doctor's office because I'm deficient (picky eater).
I always feel amazing afterwards though, lots of energy, much happier!

B-12 is the only vitamin that is not found in plant sources (including vegetables, fruits, beans or nuts). Meats, yogurts, cheeses etc are the only natural source, many vegetarians have to take supplements for that reason

I use them and they sure do work for me! I use the sublingual (dissolve under the tongue). I understand they are less effective if you take a capsul since the stomach acid destroys some of it. Shots work, too, but my way is easier - and less painful. Have been doing this for several years, off and on. Definitely feel better when I'm ON. I get mine from Trader Joe's. BTW, Dr. Oz just confirmed that they were effective and this is the method he suggested.

I eat what should be enough for someone who doesn't have a deficiency, however my body doesn't absorb it all from food.
Hence why I have to take extra, in the form of a pill.

It is also recommended for your nervous system. I used to give it to my daughter before ball games when I knew she was going to pitch the game. I also gave it to her before she took the ACT. I recommended it to my students too. My husband took it before a big jog interview. We swear by it for that reason.

I take B-complex at the recommendation of my neuro. It seems to help me. Talk to your doctor though. Too much is not a good thing.

According to the National Institute of Health - any form of Oral administered B12 is only partially assimilated.

Strips, sub lingual, lozenges, tablets - NONE are better. Injections will give the best availability, of the largest amount of dosage.

    http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb12

    The direct quote:

"Existing evidence does not suggest any differences among forms with respect to absorption or bioavailability. However the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 from dietary supplements is largely limited by the capacity of intrinsic factor. For example, only about 10 mcg of a 500 mcg oral supplement is actually absorbed in healthy people [8].

In addition to oral dietary supplements, vitamin B12 is available in sublingual preparations as tablets or lozenges. These preparations are frequently marketed as having superior bioavailability, although evidence suggests no difference in efficacy between oral and sublingual forms [16,17]."
