I'm new to the whole exercise lark. I see a lot of folks using heart rate monitors and saying they're a more accurate method of measuring calories burned during exercise. Can someone in the know explain why that is, and maybe give me a few tips as to which brand is best to buy? Thanks!

A more accurate estimate of your calorie burn is obtained from a formula using your weight, sex, age, V02 max and average heart rate. You can spend moe and get a HRM that does the calc, or spend les and ty[e the average heart rate into a site such as http://www.triathlontrainingblog.com/calculators/calories-burned-calculator-based-on-average-heart-rate/

You will find that the canned estimates are way out for you.

I would recommend going with a Polare HRM. They have several models and a great track record for producing a good product.

    Hi,
I got my Polar FT7 today itself, had a good session in the gym today with it monitoring away
Initial feedback is positive, as able to track different activities like Kinect Boxing and areas not documented properly
    Regards

I have had a Polar FT7 for about 5 months and i would never go back. This HRM tracks the type of burns I do, and stores data for more than a month so I can look back and see what kind of work out I did when or whatever. Also I found this really important when I was a little heavier because MFP calorie burns are actually higher then what you burn in real life. Before I got my HRM I was eating the right amount according to MFP and how many calories I burned but never lost any weight, when I got my heart rate monitor and actually started punching in a more accurate number I started dropping weight more quickly because my numbers were more accurate and I could better guage what I could and couldn't eat according to how many calories I had eaten during the day...I hope that makes sense and helps. I have a couple of friends who have this and they love it as well. You get that instant gratification of seeing the..."Yep! I just burnt a heck of a lot of calories!" lol
