Now the article.. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/19/feds-shut-down-file-sharing-website/

The site did have a lot of movies and stuff get thrown up on it. Yet they would remove stuff when people hit copyright button. The site was used a lot by smaller computer companies to host files legitimately as well. It's a big blow to the sharing of data.

Im sorry but as much as I love pirating *kitten* off sites like this, we'll be better off if they're all shut down and SOPA/PIPA arent passed...right?

I mean, the laws to shut these down have been in place long enough that maybe they should've been actually enforcing them?

I dont know...either way theres MUCH bigger things our government should worry about. ffs.

Why do you think this? Piracy is theft. And we crack down on thieves, yeah?

Nothing's free in this world. If you want something, you should pay for it instead of trying to steal it. I'm not familiar with this particular site, but if people were getting pirated stuff off of it, I'm not sorry to see it go. If sites like that didn't exist and prosper, there wouldn't have been any call for SOPA/PIPA to be written, and we wouldn't have to worry about what happens if they get passed.
  • Haha, I totally made a RIP thread about this but it got buried!

This is really inconvenient; I'm sure they'll go after the others too.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA.. I work for a big ISP and SOPA and Ip Proctection Act are not going to stop pirating. It's going to make consumer life harder though. The biggest problem is how the acts are worded, it gives way too much control and no check and balance to the government. You know what is going to happen if they pass SOPA and Ip Protect act (they both have to pass or this is a moot point as neither one is effective without each other), everything is going to be proxy driven and ran over seas. Which most pirates do via seedboxes anyways.

This act would kill just destroy sites that offer legitimate places to host files as well. As well as things such as wikipedia were they could be like.. Oh that is copyrighted text and the government no ifs, no process, no appeal process could seize wikipedia and the black list the IP in every ISP DNS... No this is not a good act. The lack of an appeal and due process is the biggest issue with it imo. You aren't going to stop the piracy, you just make everyone elses life harder.

Thieves arent really our biggest problem right now, what with the starving people and the protests and the abuse of power and the corruption and the issues with the middle east and the budget issues and the economy....

Again I work for an isp/developer/data warehouse and this would hurt us more then it would hurt piracy. The laws aren't well written and need a revamp first. That is why sites like google, amazon, reddit, and wikipedia made such a stink about it.

You're right, thieves aren't the BIGGEST problem, but if somebody stole your crap, I'd bet you'd be on the phone to the cops right quick.

To be clear, I do not support SOPA/PIPA. I just understand why they came about. It's a misguided attempt to fix this very big problem.

And the person accused would have a legal process.

I dont get how my crap being stolen is likened to some millionares crap being stolen.

Sorry, I have to clarify this......after reading the previous couple of posts about piracy.

So, have I been wrong to catch up on programmes through sites such as sidereel who have links to megavideo?

Slightly confuddled....or is this all about people who deliberately infringe copyright laws and copy the films, programmes and then SELL it as their own via a link. Cos if that's the case, then loads of sites should get done. or are people doing this through such legite sites. Oh pants, my technical, knowledge is low when it comes to stuff like this. Im blonde..

Can I still click a link to watch a programme?

I had a lot of things on there that was my property to share. The music that I made and my personal videos full of my own content. This pisses me off. I know a lot of people that actually used the site legally and lost most of their works.

Well......after reading the article, I guess the answer to my question is I can't just click a link to watch a programme....

@jovialation: Stealing is stealing. If it's not yours, don't take it. It doesn't matter whether you're stealing from a poor person or a rich person -- YOU are still doing the wrong thing.

See, and that really sucks. If people didn't feel the need to steal, innocent people wouldn't have been hurt. I'm sorry you lost those videos.

Because if it wasn't yours and you didn't have permission, you would've stolen it.

Except there are better ways to combat digital pirating than shutting down websites that are also used legitimately.

Riiiiight, but... it is mine. I took it a few days ago. I don't steal pictures. As a photographer, stealing makes me sad face.

It's not the same as actually stealing someone's ****, it's more like sharing your **** about and borrowing someone elses. If I buy a DVD, CD or book, I'll lend it to my friends.... File sharing is just the same but on a bigger scale. I get it, it's illegal, but morally is it any different from a library? They were considered a good thing, you know, information for all not just those who can afford it :/
