Shovelglove - working out with a sledgehammer.

I really like this exercise. It sounds really weird when you try to explain it to someone, working out with a sledgehammer?!? And I got some funny looks at my local hardware store when I bought my first one. The man asked if I was doing some remodeling and I replied "nope, I'm going to use this for exercise".

I like the idea of useful movements. Doing exercises that will strengthen muscles I would need for real world applications. I really like that the equipment is small and fits in a corner of my living room, and hey, I could even use it for home defense! LOL.

A lot of people I know who do jujitsu train with a sledgehammer, they usually hit an old tractor tyre with it to build their core and grip strength for grappling.

    bump. Epic awesome.
  • I've been doing shovelglove on and off (mostly off, unfortunately) for about six months now. It really is good. I do it first thing after I get up - if I'm not running out the door - and I feel more energetic and stronger all day. But when I'm sick or too busy, it slips. The nice thing is that I can get right back into it as soon as things calm down.

I do 3 major and 5 minor exercises in 14 minutes; I'm counting it as 14 minutes of cardio for 140 calories plus 5 sets of 50 reps with an 8-lb weight (the weight of my sledgehammer) for strength. If I get a FitBit I'll be interested to see what it says...my pedometer can't see it, of course.
