Cycling Junkies Out There?

I've come up with a new nickname for myself - "Cycleborg".
I got those clip on shoes now, so I 'become one with the bike'. I really like the clips though. I feel more pull in my thighs as I now cycle a complete circle instead of just pushing down.
My husband and I ride 2-3 days a week an average of 45-60 minutes at 17-18 mph each ride.
On Memorial Day, we decided to take a 50 mile ride and not worry about the time or average speed. We did the 50 miles in 3 hours exactly! (That's 17 mph average!) Not bad for a couple of new riders! We just started riding the end of last summer and of course had to take the winter off (we're not THAT committed yet!).
Just looking for other cyclist on MFP to chat with.

Not a junkie yet but getting there. I just got my bike out about a month ago for the first time in I don't know how many years (I got it when my daugther was born, she is 21). I have been riding 2-3 days a week so far 5-8 miles. I am planning on going this weekend to get fitted for a new bike. Any suggestions?0

Not a junkie, but would like to be! I've taken a few classes but my bottom always hurts so bad for days later I have a hard time going back. It's a goal of mine.
I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions for you about your bike.
If you have any for me to help me become a junkie, I would appreciate it!

I love my bike! I ride 15 miles in the morning before work (it really gets me pumped up and ready for the day) and 15+ miles after. I live in Northern Michigan, so there are tons of cool trails everywhere and the scenery is awesome.0

I'm not a junkie, but I'm trying to be a bike lover!! I just started riding on Tues and I haven't been on a bike since I was 8th grade!! So far so good. The only bad thing is that my butt hurts!! I have a cushioned seat plus an additional cushion on my seat. Any suggestions??0

I like to bike, but not a junkie. However, I'm married to one. Did you know you can get snow tires for bikes so you can keep on all winter long. My husband does. Whether he's sane or not is another question. :laugh:0

I used one of those gel seats from Target for the first year. After that I started to upgrade parts on my bike and now I have a new seat that I love. But upgrading can start to get pricey so start with the gel seat to begin with. If any of you have a trainer that you can set your bike up on, practice with intervals, and cycling with one leg. You'll start to see a difference in your revolutions and a smother cadence. Good luck to all the other junkies out there! If I have to have only one addiction this is it!!0

I'm a former bicycling junkie and plan on being again. I had to stop because I got pregnant and couldn't pedal! LOL!
I'm getting out my bike and dusting it off again but I have to get new tubes in my tires and probably get a tune up on the bike.
I also have a gel seat and the padded shorts so that helps with the rear-end issues.0 -
I bought what I call a "Big Butt seat" It is wider and more comfy. It had extra padding on it. I bought it at WalMart but it was hard to find for about $20.0

I love my bike!! I got a road bike last year and what a difference it makes!! Clipping in really does make you feel *at one with the bike*.
I have a triathlon this weekend, can't wait to race w/ my new road bike! :bigsmile:0 -
Hey - I'm glad I'm not alone!
I have a 'double gel' seat that I LOVE! I also use the padded shorts. And, with all the 'junk in my trunk' you'd think I have plenty of padding already!
I ride in Ohio on a bike trail that goes from Cincinnati to Columbus (so I've been told - I've not covered the whole thing yet!). It's a beautiful ride.
I tried riding on the trail when there was some residual slush/ice and wiped out. Maybe I need the snowtires...:embarassed:
Maybe I'll get a picture of me in my cycling gear and post it this weekend.
LET'S RIDE! :happy:0 -
Love my bicycles! I replaced my comuter bike last year with a road bike. Ladies specialized. I'm madly in love with it. I bought it last year while training for a triathlon. Best purchase I've ever made.
This year I bought a true mountain bike for off road trails. Not as graceful on that.
I try to comute at least 2 of my 4 work days and also get in 1-2 rides on the weekend. My goal this summer is to get up to a 100 mile ride. I'm creating my own century:laugh:0 -
I love riding, have clips, padded spandex shorts, and aero bars!! Going 50 miles tomorrow with a crazy group of riders. They ride every weekend in the summer both Saturday and Sunday, a group of 5-15 riders usually show up. I am hoping it doesn't rain tomorrow morning, I think Sunday it is a greater chance of rain. In August they go on 133 mile ride from Wisconsin down the lake shore to Indiana.0

I LOVE my bicycle!! It never gets boring for me and it burns such good calories. I even have my daughter and my honey doing it (my sons are 9 and 11 so they love it anyway) I do it everyday for at least an hour. Haven't got the padded seat so my butt does feel pretty bad after but a nice soak in a warm bath helps with that. :bigsmile:0

I have a goal to do a century ride by Labor Day. Since I knocked out 50 on Memorial Day, I think I'll do 75 miles on Independance Day.
Anyone recommend a camel water pack? I don't know if it would feel too heavy when full, get warm to quickly, or freeze my back! Are they worth the $40 price?0 -
My hubby and I ride. Love it. We ride daily. He rides at like 4 am most days though. I go a little later. We ride together on the weekends. We are considering taking the kids on a 19 mile ride tomorrow (flat terrain on a river walk trail). The kids think they are up for up...I don't know though!0

I have one but rarely use it. I have two bottle cages on my bike and if we are doing longer than 50 we take cash and small cooler on the back of one our bikes. I find the camel pack uncomfortable but will use it if it is really hot out and we are going to be on the road for a long ride.
We are planning a century ride in September but it is organized with rest areas that are stocked with food and beverage.0 -
A great tip for those that have 2 bottle cages for long rides.
Fill the first bottle with sport drink
Fill the second bottle with gatorade powder (maybe only 1/3 full)
All you need now is water. When the 1st bottle is empty dump in some powder and fill with water. I often hit water spouts on the side of a church or fill up in a convenience store.
Have to laugh about the junkie heading. I have 4-bikes and 2-legs.... is that wrong?
Open road and tailwind wishes to all!

Rode 18 miles last night in 1 hour!
That's pretty good for a (umm, how do I put this delicately...?) a person not in peek physical health. Heck - my profile will tell you I'm a Grandma and still need to lose 40 pounds! GO ME!0 -
When its not too hot I just use my cages. However, when its really hot I use my Walmart brand camel back knock off ($20).
I've gotten in 75 miles so far this week. Hope to make it over 100. We'll see if the shoulder pain subsides for a commuter day tomorrow.0 -
Rainy, yucky weather we've been having. Maybe tonight or tomorrow I'll be able to hit the trail again.
Prayerful Mom - did you make your 100? Sorry to hear you have shoulder pain.0 -

It rained here all day yesterday and I really NEEDED a ride for stress reasons. I did go this morning and plan on going again later this evening (I do better in the evenings as far as pushing myself). The day before, it rained all day and there was a break in the rain so I went out for a bit. It started to sprinkle so I headed home and as soon as I got my bike in the garage, DOWN POUR!!! Gotta love Indiana weather.0 -

Tire malfunction this morning. Didn't get to commute today:sad: Shoulder still giving me pain so probably better that way. I sure do appreciate CA weather though. Sorry you all are fighting the rain. I ride in the rain too but it sure is a lot of clean up on the bike afterwards.0 -

Sorry to hear about your shoulder. I would LOVE to ride in the rain but my bike is like 22 years old and I am afraid it won't make it. I am looking into getting another one soon I hope.0 -
My husband I ride. He likes to do triathlons but I stick with the bike and the gym. We live in Myrtle Beach and there are a lot of great routes. Does anyone use mapmyride.com ? It gives great routes for your area.

Bumping back up. How are the Cycling junkies doing?? I got out for a 15 mile bike y'day, very windy but nice to get on the bike! :bigsmile:0

I went on a 12 mile bike ride today. I felt that it was quite the accomplishment for me.
I watched DH finish his first triathalon. It was quite the motivator for me to get my butt in gear! I told him I would be in shape to do it with him next year. I sooo have my work c ut out for me. But I am going to do it. I am doing Couch 2 5K to get me running. And alternating between that and spinning/biking.0 -
Hi everyone:)
I just got a bike yesterday after not riding for about 18 years and I'm already hooked. I did a short 4mile ride this morning just to make sure I remembered how to shift and so on and it was so nice. My husband is getting his bike on the 10th and we'll then be able to go out on rides together on the weekends.
I got pretty lucky with my bike as it was a discontinued model (Specialized Globe City 7) but it pretty much came loaded so I cant complain and its a pretty sweet bike to me for my 1st good bike.0 -
