I am starting the couch to 5k program today I was wondering if anyone has done this program. Also, wanted to see if it really works before I start.

My boss did it last year and was able to run 5k within 12 weeks. She did a fun run for charity and managed to run all of the way without stopping. I've never tried it though - I hate running!!
  • Hi

I completed it, and loved it, defiantly recommend you doing it!!!

I'm starting week six for the second time today. I love it but I only did one day last week  It's such a doable program!

I'm starting week 3 today. So far I haven't died running. Hoping to run the Anthem 5k in March. Hope I'll be ready by then. :) Good Luck!

Yes, you should totally do it. It is downright amazing how at the beginning, even the one-minute runs seemed virtually impossible, but by the end, I could run!! Now, about 3 months after finishing C25k, I am still running 3 days a week. Yesterday I did 4.5 miles. I had an app on my phone and the voice would tell you when to walk and run, it kept it very simple!

About week 4 or 5 it really kicks up, but don't get discouraged, repeat a week or 2 if you need a more gradual change.

I've done it and love it, weeks about 4-6 were the hardest I thought. Once you get through it though its worth it.

I just started week 3 and love it! I have Lupus and I'm doing the program so I can join in the Lupus walk/run this year!!! I have to be careful what exercises I do and I have no problems with this program. I downloaded an app for my phone that helps me keep everything straight. :)

Kiwi1003 What is the app? Thank you
  • I just started today! I wanna be able to keep up with my 13yr old when we do race for life in july! :D
  • I finished it last week and while it certainly wasn't fun...I hate running...I love how I feel when I'm done with my run. I was so out of shape I had to do week 1 twice and now I do 30 mins straight. I recommend it highly. Just make sure you have good running shoes.

Yep, I used it a few years back, have started running again after baby 2 and already running 30 mins comfortably.
  • HA! I just downloaded the ap for this a while back and planned on starting it very soon! I'd love to have someone else to help keep me on track! Add me if you're interested in doing it together. I've heard amazing things about the program.
  • I am in week 3 of the c25k program. It's amazing how much stronger you feel with each week. I use the Podrunner Intervals podcast on my ipod. I highly recommend it. It has music with various tempos that tell you when to walk/run.

I started using it about Aug. Completed it and still run. It is a great way to start. I don't regret any of it.
  • It absolutely works. I worked through the couch to 5k program a couple of years ago from a point of getting winded walking around the block. I continued to push myself after completing the program and finished my first half-marathon last January. Stick with it, listen to your body, and see if you can find someone to join you. I'm always at my best when I can run with someone. Best of luck! You'll feel great every time you accomplish that next milestone!

I'm about to start week 4 tomorrow... so far (after some initial aches in my shins from not being used in AGES) I haven't had any problems with it... but we'll see how we go this week :) I think the best thing about running is that you don't have to psych yourself up to do it... you just put on your shoes and walk (or run) out the door!
  • Planning on starting soon myself! Now that I'm down almost 30lbs I feel ready to "run." I have done 5k races in the past but have not been able to run them because i trained on the ellypitical or the arc trainer- I need to learn to RUN!

I'm super shy about running on a treadmill, but WHATEVERRRRR!!!! I'll feel better on a treadmill than I will being fat in public for the rest of my life as my health and mobility get worse and I end up like family members with Diabetes and horrible living conditions!

Ok- Now I'm motivated! How about you???

I started C25K in Sept. 2010, ran my first 5K race the following December, my first 5 miler race last may, my first 10K last October, my first half marathon this past December and now I'm working toward my first full marathon on 3/4...so yeah, it worked for me. I wasn't a runner before in case you are wondering.

i am at the beginning of week 8 day 1. i love it! i could not run for maybe a minute when i first started running and last week i ran for 30 min straight!

here are some tips: repeat weeks if needed! i started this program in the beginning of september and just finishing next week or so. i did take off a month and did repeat several days if needed. also, i don't really care about the time right now. i can do a 5k in 36 minutes so about a 11 minute mile or so. after i finish this program i am going to try and increase my speed.

    have fun!

oh i use the c25k app for the iphone...i think it was 3 dollars but its awesome. you can listen to your own music, have cues to tell you when to start/stop and journal how your run was.

Completely agree. It is great! I finished Thanksgiving week and have continued to run as well. The progress you make is unreal. Never thought I would be able to run for 30 minutes but now I can.

YES! It's great! I did it a year ago. Since then I have done 5, 5ks races and one half marathon. This Saturday I'm running another 5k.

    It works. It really works.

I finished it mid-December outside, although my running is not very fast. I am doing it again on a treadmill over the winter to try to increase my speed and just finished up week 2.

I was so excited to see this thread. I have done a few 5k's but at about 2 miles, I need to walk some then run some. I have yet to be able to complete the 5K running. :( The stamina is just not there. One of my goals is to RUN an entire 5K. Off to find the app and give it a shot! Good Luck to all of you! :)

I'm on week 4, day 3. I never thought I'd be able to run for 5 minutes straight but now I can. Like others have mentioned, if you're not comfortable do a week over again. I might do week 4 for a second time.

Feel free to add me as a friend.

FYI - for those of you wanting the app. You need to have smart phone. Go the the "Market", click on "search", type in "couch to 5k", then download. Its a really cool app.

    Good luck!
