Hello. I am 5'4" and 117 lbs. I don't have a gym membership, right now I can't afford it. Plus I get really scared even thinking about the gym... Just, everyone staring at me, most of the people I know that go there are already fit..
My mom has had agoraphobia all of her life, but over the past few years she's gained a significant amount of weight. And her agoraphobia has gotten so much worse.
I have slightly the same problem. It's not as bad but, when I'm in a crowded unfamiliar place, I get very anxietal and paranoid..
When I'm in school it doesn't effect me as much. It's just unfamiliar places. If I were to go with my big sister (she's in her 20s) it wouldn't effect me as bad. But you see, my sister lives 2 hours away..
What I'm asking is, what are some really good exercises to tone my belly, my hips, my thighs and my arms.
When I say my arms I mean where my humorous is located, you know the biceps and triceps etc. I know dips work the triceps and pushups work the biceps, but I need more.
I plan on getting dumbells soon. I don't know how soon, my birthday is aroung the corner (literally, almost a week away), and if I get money then, I can go and buy some. But if I don't then I'll be waiting until I get a summer job.
I'M RAMBLING. XD
HELPPPPP!!!!

  • If you go to the gym a few times, it won't be unfamiliar.

Besides, people's fear that everyone is staring at them and judging them is unfounded. People are concentrating on their own thing. Besides, guys at the gym only stare at the cute ones, so if people are looking at you, take it as a good thing. (And judging by your picture, I'd say that is the more likely reason people would be looking at you.)

But anyway, for exercises, if you can't afford a gym membership, then things like running, swimming (if there's a community pool), crunches, and pushups are going to help. You can also DVR some of those exercise TV shows and work out in front of the TV. Also, joining a sports team is going to help you out because it gives you incentive to go, as well.

Try to avoid letting your mother's condition rub off on you. You are your own person. If you were to go to the gym, you might get a few glances but that'd be because you're pretty and have shocking red hair. Nobody really cares what other people are doing so long as it doesn't negatively impact their own workout.

With all that said, if you want to workout at home, try to get hold of one of the workout DVDs you see have worked for people here. Have a look at the success stories section - in the meantime, you can use plastic bottles filled with water as dumbbells as well, so don't think you need to have those before you can start.

All the best, and good luck :)

  • I was doing volleyball this past fall for the first time and I fell in love with it. I had lost a little bit of fat. As a team we were doing shuffles for 45 seconds, then 35 seconds, 25 seconds, 15 seconds, 10 seconds, then 5 seconds. We did that twice every practice. We did 30 wall jumps, rest and 30 more. We did 10 suicides per practice. We ran around the gym for 1 minute straight holding the ball above our heads. If anyone put the ball down or on their head or lower than their head, the entire team had to go again. It was GREAT. But now that volleyball season is over, I don't do any other sports. :/
I plan on buying some exercising dvds like Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred when I get money :D

I dont know if you have an iPhone or not, but I just downloaded an amazing free app called Nike Training Club. It is byfar the best "on your own" work out app I have found. It has cardio and muscle training workouts. I love it and it has helped me out. I am right around the same body size as you are, if that helps you out.

You could always try things from the BeachBody line, p90x, Brazil Butt Lift, etc.
  • I will definitely try using the water bottles as dumbells, I had heard that people did that.. But I never would think it might actually work. I'll get some water bottles so I can use those and fill them up. Thank youu! (:
  • also at 5'4 117 you are a healthy weight, losing 19 lbs will place you underweight

For $9 you can purchase a video to do at home. I would recommend one of the Jillian Michaels dvd's. Maybe Ripped in 30
  • also at 5'4 117 you are a healthy weight, losing 19 lbs will place you underweight

I never said I was looking to lose 19 lbs? O__o At least I don't remember it lol. I'm looking to tony my belly, my thighs, my arms, and my "lovehandles" lol.
  • I think you are labeling yourself too much with araga - whatever that your mom has. Everyone has some sort of phobia, I have the same one you are talking about, i just didn't know there was a name for it. I was scared to death to go to the gym, in fact, I couldn't even sleep the night before my first workout!

What made me do it is how I felt. I just hated how I looked and felt, and I knew that if I didn't go, I would continue to feel that way. So I got up super early, five thirty and went thinking nobody would be there that early, and I was totally wrong. There were about 15 there and they were all doing there own thing. Nobody really cares what anyone else is doing at the gym.

It's wonderful that you want to stay in shape so young and before you get overweight. I am sure you will enjoy it.

My dear, you are pefectly healthy, and a bit under age to be here...your profile says "I am actually 16 years old (on feb 1st 2012" to be on MFP you have to be 18 (its in the rules/agreement when you sign up) I get that you are trying to tone up and be healthy which is FANTASTIC, keep it up but I would suggest seeking out sparkteen.com (i think thats the address) you will find many more people your own age over there.

If you were doing wall jumps/suicides etc while in volleyball you can continue to do those at home, also bodyrock has some good stuff as well as Jillian and so many more DVDs.

Your ticker shows that you have a 19lb weight loss target.
  • And as far as people staring, get used to it honey. It will continue way past when you get your first gray hairs, haha!

Really you can use anything heavy that you can easily hold in your hands. For example you could fill up a duffle bag with phone books and use that to do skull crushers for your triceps or deadlifts to tone your legs (if you don't know how to do these exercises just look up on YouTube, you will see plently of instructional videos). Lunges are also one of the best exercises you can do for your legs at home, it will tone all around. And even though you're not playing volleyball anymore, you can still do that workout you described outside.

When you get your birthday money, try shopping for workout equipment at Good Will first. They always have tons of stuff at much cheaper prices than sports stores, so you will be able to get more equipment. You can even call ahead and ask what they have so when you get to the store, you'll already know what you're looking for. It's a good idea to get a few different sizes of dumbbells for different exercises. Resistance bands are also great for working out at home. Also I'm not sure where you live, but see if there is a Play It Again Sports in your area. It's a used sporting goods store that also has good prices.

Try not to be scared of the gym. Maybe ask a friend who you know already goes regularly if you can go with (most gyms will give you a free one day pass to try it out). It's motivating to be surrounded by other people working hard to get fit, and you might end up liking it. Either way, I know the gym is not for everyone so just do what works for you. Maybe look for another volleyball league, or try another sport.

Whenever I'm feeling not motivated, I just remind myself that I am a strong woman and I can whatever I set my mind to. I repeat it over and over until I believe it. It sounds silly, but sometimes you just have to convince yourself that you're capable. Go get it girl!

Oh.. That was when I had unrealistic and unhealthy goals for myself.. I changed it :DD

I have actually never heard of that site. I'm making a page for it right now. I was told about this one from tumblr. Because I have a fitness blog there, and sooo many people from there made a page here. So I figured I'd give it a try.

Well, then, welcome :) I'm brand new myself. My fiancee found it on the Android Market last night and got me to join, too.

I've been to Spark as part of a school project last summer and it is a very good site. If you want to be around people your own age, then you will like it there. But if you don't mind being around us old fogies, then you're certainly welcome here, too, and I look forward to seeing more of your posts :)

Since you mentioned 30 day shred, here is level 1 (full length) on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Pc-NizMgg8.

I am currently doing the bodyrock.tv 30 day challenge, so definitely check out that site. And you can start without any weights. Any exercises is better than no exercises.
