Skater Boys...and Girls!

This winter I've discovered a love for ice skating. It manages to combine a social activity with fitness, and it's getting me outside much more often. It helps that my city has a free outdoor rink that is both well maintained, and a brisk 35 minute walk from my house.

MFP tells me I burn about 400 cals in 40 minutes of moderately paced skating at 9MPH or less. Anyone know how accurate that is? I skate at a pretty good clip, usually faster than other people on the rink, but not obnoxiously slow. The rink I skate on is an odd size oval, not nearly as large as a hockey rink, but my pace seems to be anywhere from 10 to 25 or 30 seconds per lap, depending on how busy it is, and who I am skating with.

Anyone else work skating into their workout routine for winter?

Me! :) Our base has an NHL-sized rink and free open skating three times a week where hardly anyone goes... so I take my kids, they play, and I skate laps til my legs hurt.
  • nice! I skated twice yesterday. Once before dinner, and then again afterwards!

It's a lot of fun... kind of goes back to being a kid, I think. lol I'd like to wear a HRM sometime, though, because the calorie burn everyone online has posted just seems crazily high. But maybe it's just deceiving because the cold air keeps the sweating down.
