Do you ever stop and notice that most of the "bullies" are also the people who offer, repeatedly, the most insightful, comprehensive and accurate answers?

When you actually read nasty words and/or comments that without a doubt are targeting someone, yup - Ive seen plenty.... but, there are many times there are posted replies to the OP that have been absolutely genuine, no malicious words/phrases used and the OP still takes it the wrong way.

For some people, its very easy to misconstrue what you read and they either assume you are being nasty, or they verbally act out to what they are reading because they being oversensitive, have a very difficult time differentiating between genuine versus slander. If we had voice-chat capability, that would be the best way to determine who is being genuine or who is not.

Like most boards, MFP has its family of trolls. I have been stalked by a select few before for what Im on MFP for, and have had to block/ignore AND report their horrendous private messages to MFP's higher-ups.... One of them was so bad, even the higher-ups replied back with being absolutely thrown off kilter because of how some of these trolls can get downright nasty!

Honestly speaking, I dont care if a person spells incorrectly - they may very well be on a cell phone that when typing on it, it is a bit hypersensitive and sends a word misspelled... its really no big deal to me. Im considered lucky to have blood flow to my finger tips half the time where its so damn cold for me with losing 70lbs! LOL!!!!

It can be a hit-or-miss on MFP.

I actually think that, on the whole, the posts on this site are hugely positive - as with anything (particularly anything on the internet) there will always be room for thoughtlessness and jackassery, but I think the ratio of bad to good on MFP is strongly weighted towards the good

Jackassery - what a great word! LOL!!!!!!!

Good for you. I offered my opinion and responded to someone calling me lame. Who's in the wrong here?

What has shocked me on here is the way that people start crying out about being "bulled" in threads where there isn't even so much of a hint of anything like bullying. If it was justified, absolutely fair enough, but to cry bully every time someone merely disagrees with you (which I've seen several times on here when there is nothing even close to bullying behaviour) is downright disgusting, and in my opinion as bad as behaving in a bullying way in the first place.

It also trivialises the idea of bullying per se, and downplays the terrible effects that genuine bullying can have on people's lives.

Really? While I disagree with his comment as well I think reporting it may be a little unnecessary...but ok.

I have never seen so many rude, hateful people as I have here. Do any of you ever stop to think about how the other person feels? There are a lot of emotionally fragile people here. Would you handle these conversations differently if someone you care about had these same opinions? Cruelty like I see here has pushed people to suicide. You never know what frame of mind a person is in when you tell them that their way of thinking, their way of being, is worthless. Would you even care what happens to them or how they feel or how their family would feel, if, God forbid, they chose to take their lives?

I agree and it sucks to see how rude and immature people were posting to your comment.. total bullying, reminds me of immature/insecure people in high school.

I agree this is a very important aspect this site is missing.
Part of being healthy is being happy and feeling supported by others. If people are afraid of being attacked or abused to ask their questions then that is another way it hindering their diet and weight loss journey.

Unfortunatly you're always going to deal with meanies... in real life and in the cyber world. MFP seems to be one of the least aggressive forums I've ever been on. I think, as sad as it is, SOME rudeness is to be expected. Not everyone is nice, it's just how it is- in life and online. I've never seen a thread where it looked like someone was being singled out and attacked. I've seen sarcastic one liners, but IMO if you're going to set up a profile ONLINE where there is lots and lots of strangers, some negativity is to be expected.

    Hi Folks,

Wanted you to know we're making efforts to reduce the rudeness. I'm all for lively debate, but I'm extremely allergic when it crosses the line into personal insult and mockery of others.

I'm going to lock this thread only because it doesn't sit cleanly with the guidelines against bringing up past situations gone sour on the site, but trust me the point is acknowledged and we're working on it.

    Regards,
    Steven
