Whey Protein?

I have heard conflicting instructions on whether I should be incorporating whey protein into my diet. I work out everyday, but I only lift weights a couple times a week.
Some people have told me that having whey proteins will make me gain weight, while others have told me that it will help recover the muscles and speed the development of those muscles.
Thoughts? Opinions?
