Substitutions for cornmeal or corn muffin mix

I have a casserole recipe. It is an original recipe. It is:

Ground beef cooked with peppers and onions, a layer of pepper jack cheese, a layer of black beans, and a cornbread topping

I usually just use corn muffin mix for the topping, but I would like to find a healthier substitution and I am looking for suggestions.

The biggest problem I would find with the muffing mix would be all the sugar in it.

You can use cornmeal instead. It is plenty sweet enough for me. Cut down the portion you use to further reduce calories. I don't know what your actual concern is with the corn muffin mix.

Crushed corn flakes maybe? They typically work well for breading -- I just bought some because I have a baked onion ring recipe using corn flakes that I need to try out!

I was hoping to cut down on calories and maybe up some protein.
