Hobo is some of the leanest meat out there.

I only use free range, organic, hormone-free hobos.

Those aren't hobos. They're called hippies.

I'm still chuckling about this one 10 minutes later...!

TIP: Soak the meat overnight in milk to get the patchouli smell out of it.

Wow! You guys all had a party while I was gone.

    Hate I missed it!

Yes, chicken is, in fact, a substitute for hobo in this recipe. In some parts of the country they can be harder to find-- and too thin to bother with. Apparently lots of you live near plentiful supplies of plump, juicy hobos and all I can say is, "I'm jealous!"

I've been trying to get our local supermarket to start stocking frozen hobo since fresh is so hard to find. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed on that one.

    Well done, Chelle.

Why can't we have more OPs that come back to find their thread derailed, and instead of getting miffed, provide some of the choicest commentary of the now-derailed thread?

    Kids, that's how its done.

Thanks, Kenneth. I guess I'm just as warped as the rest of you...!

Damn! Beat me to the patchouli comment. I wouldn't have thought of milk, though. Will lowfat work?

In the event that I don't own liquid smoke, can I substitute anything else?

Normally I am not super sensitive, but the title bothers me a bit.

I'm not exactly sure why. They called these "Hobo Dinners" in Girl Scouts.

It refers to the cooking technique.

Since most hobos don't carry around pots and pans with them they cook in foil or cans or whatever is available.

And if the title bothered you, the rest of the thread is definitely going to put you over the edge.

Sorry if we offended-- my intent was to post a recipe, not make a political statement.

Now if I had called it "Occupy Tin Foil" that would have been another story...

You could just leave it out-- but I love using it in recipes like these and also when I cook beans or field peas.

In my local supermarket they stock it near the marinades and barbecue sauces.

Another option would be Goya's Ham Flavored Seasoning, in the spice aisle. It's in a yellow box. Despite it's name, it's vegan-- in case that was a requirement. It has a lot of sodium-- but it tastes fabulous.

If you cook then in the oven, what temp and time? Also, temp and time on a grill? Thanks so much! Looks delicious!

My sister makes a recipe very similar to this in foil. She cooks for 45 minutes in at 350. She also browns the chicken first.

Since the name "Hobo Dinner" is offensive to some (I'm sorry, I had no idea) I tried to rename the meal-- but I can no longer edit the original post.

I would like to rename it to: "Cookware-less Cooking Technique Inspired By People On-The-Go Who Live A Carefree Lifestyle And Oftentimes Ride The Rails."

My deepest apologies to all I have offended.
