Hi all!
I'm kinda new here, about 3 and half weeks. Lost a few pounds too!
Anyway, I'm trying a lot of vegetarian meals lately, I'm not turning veggie. Oh hell no. The thing is....I HATE onions! Every veggie menu I look at includes onions. I've tried to leave them out of the recipe, but some foods need whatever onions do to that meal. Are there any nice veggie NON ONION recipes/meal ideas out there?

Thanks, and keep doing what you're doing

if you hate onions i dont see why replacing onions with a vegetable you do like would ruin the meal?

here are some suggestions i have according to the style of the food (i have a sister in law who cant eat onions so i keep it in mind)

mexican - replace onions with chives and bell peppers
indian - replace onions with chopped garlic and lentil
american - replace onion with mushrooms
chinese - replace onion with tofu or chili
mediterranean - replace onion with small garbanzo beans
japanese - replace onion with shiitake mushrooms or tofu

usually replacing onion wont ruin an entire recipe, i should think.

I completely hated onions for 32 years of my life, as in rejecting an entire dish because I could tell it had been cooked with an onion, returning burgers to McD's because there were two pieces of onion on the patty... two years ago I decided enough was enough and I started re-training my taste buds. I started with chives, then leeks, then using onion soup mix in recipes, then cooking with cut-up onions but not actually eating them, cooking more with real garlic cloves helped as well.... gradually I got over it and now I can eat them. I still don't like them raw, but the flavor in food doesn't turn me completely off anymore.

But in the meantime, it doesn't ruin most foods if you leave it out. Other people will just think your cooking is a little bland.

Cool, thanks, I'll try some of those the next time I'm cooking :)

I don't think I could retrain my tastebuds either lol the smell, taste and texture of onions makes me cringe. Although I have ate lots of foods with onion in, I would prefer to cook without them.

I hear ya! I can take a little bit of onion, but when I see a Cooking Light recipe that calls for 2 cups of onion & it serves 4 people --- blech! 2 cups - OMG.

I use Cooking Light as an example because onion always seems to be a major player. I too swap "other" veggies in.

I LOVE onions, especially red (or purple) onions. Yellow onions tend to be sweet if you sautee them. But, if you can't even stand the smell...that won't work for you.

The best substitute that I could think of would be thinly sliced yellow peppers. They are just as juicy, and if you slice them thin they will cook at the same rate.
  • Onions are often easily substituted with chives and bell peppers!

I hate them, too (although I WILL eat onion rings...go figure.)

For me, it's not so much a taste thing, but a texture thing......and I've found that dried onions (from Pennzey's Spice stores, in particular) add a great flavor without that icky onion 'crunch' thing. Also, Lipton Onion Soup Mix is really good for flavor (although it has a lot of sodium)

Raw onion? never......any salad, sandwich, dish with raw onions is a NO for me!

I use peppers a lot, though.............all the colors. They add nice taste!
